Acute diarrhea is a common reason for non-wellness veterinary visits in dogs. Treatment for acute diarrhea usually consists of supportive care with nutritional intervention, fluid therapy, anthelmintics, and often an antibiotic - commonly metronidazole in North America. The empirical use of metronidazole for acute diarrhea in dogs has been a common practice in veterinary medicine for many decades; however, recent studies evaluating its use suggest it may be inappropriately utilized in many cases. Herein, we review the evidence evaluating the use of metronidazole and other antibiotics in acute diarrhea in the human and veterinary literature...

The ultrasonographic assessment of the caudal vena cava-to-aorta ratio (CVC:Ao) appears to be a promising method for early recognition of alterations of intravascular volume status in veterinary medicine. The primary objective of this study was to establish the reference intervals of the CVC:Ao ratio with ultrasound in nonsedated healthy dogs. Secondary objectives were to determine the influence of the respiratory cycle and to evaluate correlations between ultrasonographic measurements, signalment and physical exam findings...

Acute pancreatitis can be a complication of massive hemolysis, above all when intravascular in nature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between canine immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and clinically suspected acute pancreatitis (CSAP) and the role of calculated free plasma hemoglobin (Hbfp) in CSAP occurrence/development. In this cohort study the records of 95 dogs with IMHA and 95 sick dogs with pathologies other than IMHA were compared for CSAP occurrence/development...

Primary hemostatic disorders such as thrombocytopenia and thrombocytopathia are commonly encountered in small animal practice. The key stages of primary hemostasis include platelet adhesion, activation, and aggregation. Understanding the interaction between tissues, platelets, and signaling molecules not only helps clinicians comprehend clot formation but also better recognize thrombocytopathias. Although congenital thrombocytopathia is rare, commercially available platelet function tests allow veterinarians to narrow differentials in many clinical settings...

Urinary bladder tumors are not common in guinea pigs, but case numbers being diagnosed have increased in the past years. The authors present 3 referred cases of primary urinary bladder tumors in pet guinea pigs diagnosed using diagnostic imaging (CT, radiography, and ultrasonography) and exploratory laparotomy. Excision was not possible in the first case as the tumor was located at the neck of the urinary bladder and the owner opted for intraoperative euthanasia. The second and third cases both had tumors originating from the apex of the urinary bladder...

Functional pheochromocytomas secrete catecholamines and have been associated with cardiovascular lesions in dogs. This study aimed to describe the postmortem pathological findings in the cardiovascular system of dogs with pheochromocytoma and to evaluate the expression of cardiac troponin C in these dogs using immunohistochemical analysis. Twelve cases were identified, with a mean age of 10.6 years. The heart of all dogs was enlarged and with concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricular myocardium. Histological analysis showed cardiomyocyte necrosis and degeneration in the myocardium, with frequent bands of contraction, fibrosis, inflammation, and thickening of the medium-caliber arteries in the myocardium...

A 7-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat presented with locked jaw syndrome and firm swelling in the right temporal region of the skull. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a heavily calcified mass of the right coronoid process of the mandible with a popcorn appearance, consistent with a multilobular osteochondrosarcoma. The zygomatic arch was displaced laterally and ventrally due to the mass effect. The temporomandibular joint was not involved. Surgical treatment was performed and consisted of the removal of the zygomatic arch and the vertical ramus of the mandible...

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has shown promising results against squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in both in vivo and in vitro assays, mainly in humans and mice. Its applicability for treatment of feline tumors, however, remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the anticancer effects of CAP on a head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cell lineage and against a clinical case of cutaneous SCC in a cat. Control and treatment groups employing the HNSCC cell line (SCC-25) were used, the latter exposed to CAP for 60 seconds, 90 seconds, or 120 seconds...

A 3-year-old neutered male miniature poodle dog was referred with a 19-month history of unresolved dermatological signs despite long-term treatment. On physical examination, the dog had severe multifocal erythematous non-blanching patches and scales in the ventral trunk. Dermatological examination revealed Malassezia infection. Considering the history, clinical signs, and degree of infection, the possibility of a drug eruption appeared higher than that of Malassezia dermatitis. Therefore, bathing in lukewarm water was performed for 4 weeks without any other treatment, but there was no improvement...

Acute canine monocytic ehrlichiosis due to Ehrlichia canis (aCME), and primary immune thrombocytopenia (pITP) are major differentials for dogs presented with thrombocytopenia, and the two diseases may clinically overlap. The aim of this study was to compare dogs diagnosed with naturally occurring aCME and pITP, to establish potentially useful clinical and clinicopathologic discriminators. A clinical record-based retrospective study was performed in 35 dogs diagnosed with aCME and 29 dogs with pITP. Dogs with aCME were significantly younger, and were more likely to experience depression or lethargy, anorexia, body weight loss, fever, lymphadenomegaly, tick infestation, and ocular discharge on admission, compared to dogs with pITP...

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV). SFTSV causes severe symptoms both in humans and cats. In this study, we report the clinical and pathological findings of four fatal cases of cats with high SFTS viremia levels. These cats showed an acute onset of fever, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and increased serum amyloid A and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. A high viral copy number was detected in the blood, oral swabs, rectal swabs, conjunctiva swabs, and urine...
