BACKGROUND: Chronic wounds refer to those that can't reconstruct anatomical and physical functional integrity, and are usually associated with signs of microbial infection. Current therapies include debridement and dressing change, local or systemic application of antibiotics, and medical dressing care, which are not ideal for the healing of chronic wounds. OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy and safety of photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) for the treatment of chronic infectious wounds...

Plantar wart is one of the most recalcitrant types of cutaneous warts with a high recurrence rate. Recalcitrant plantar warts are resistant to traditional treatments such as cryotherapy. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a modern, non-invasive method utilized to treat benign and malignant skin disorders. Several previous studies have reported the effective application of PDT treatment for plantar warts. We reported three cases of recalcitrant plantar warts successfully treated with PDT.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors among women, and its pathological change is a relatively slow process. If it can be detected in time and treated properly, it can effectively reduce the incidence rate and mortality rate of cervical cancer, so the early screening of cervical cancer is particularly critical and significant. In this paper, we used Raman spectroscopy technology to collect the tissue sample data of patients with cervicitis, Low-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion, High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion, Well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, Moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, Poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and cervical adenocarcinoma...

Port-wine stain (PWS) birthmarks are congenital capillary malformations occurring in 0.3 %∼0.5 % of newborns. Hemoporfin-mediated vascular-acting photodynamic therapy (Hemoporfin PDT) is an emerging option for treating PWS. This in vivo study aimed to compare laser and light-emitting diodes (LED) as light source for Hemoporfin PDT. Chicken wattles were used as the animal model. Color and histopathological changes were evaluated after combining Hemoporfin with KTP laser or LED light source of 532 nm at the same doses...

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of 577 nm subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) therapy in patients with non-center involving diabetic macular edema (DME). METHODS: Twenty-two eyes of 18 patients diagnosed with non-center involving DME were included in this prospective, observational study. The patient's baseline best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), maximum retinal thickness (MRT), central macular thickness (CMT), and the area of macular exudates were determined and re-evaluated at 1, 3, and 6 months after laser treatment...

Neuroimmunomodulation is the capacity of the nervous system to regulate immune processes. The existence of neurotransmitter receptors in immune cells enables this phenomenon to take place. Neuronal mediators possess the capacity to direct and control several occurrences during the wound healing process. Nitric oxide (NO) functions as a neuromodulator, playing a crucial role in the regulation of vascular tone and blood pressure with antimicrobial properties. Photodynamic therapy has been shown to augment the function of immune cells involved in the healing process of venous leg ulcers...

SIGNIFICANCE: Vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy (V-PDT) is a clinically approved therapeutic approach for treating vascular-related diseases, such as port-wine stains (PWS). For accurate treatment, varying light irradiance is required for different lesions due to the irregularity of vascular size, shape and degree of disease, which commonly alters during different stages of V-PDT. This makes quantitative analysis of the treatment efficiency urgently needed. APPROACH: Lesion images pre- and post- V-PDT treatment of patients with PWS were used to construct a quantitative method to evaluate the differences among lesions...

SIGNIFICANCE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) can be targeted toward different subcellular localizations, and it is proposed that different subcellular targets vary in their sensitivity to photobiological damage. Since singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) has a very short lifetime with a limited diffusion length in cellular environments, measurement of cumulative 1 O2 luminescence is the most direct approach to compare the PDT sensitivity of mitochondria and plasma membrane. APPROACH: PDT-generated near-infrared 1 O2 luminescence at 1270 nm was measured together with cell viability for 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) and exogenous PpIX, at different incubation times...

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common type of nosocomial infection and severe health issues because of the difficulties and frequent recurrence. Today, alternative methods such as sonodynamic therapy (SDT), photodynamic therapy (PDT) and herbal materials use for treating infections like UTI in many countries. METHOD: We conducted searches of the biomedical databases (Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of sciences) to identify related studies from 2008-2023...

BACKGROUND: Daylight photodynamic therapy (dPDT) and topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are each effective treatments for thin grade I actinic keratosis (AKs), but less so for thicker grade II-III AKs. Prolonged topical treatment regimens can be associated with severe skin reactions and low compliance. This study compares the efficacy of sequential 4% 5-FU and dPDT with dPDT monotherapy for multiple actinic keratoses. METHODS: Sixty patients with a total of 1547 AKs (grade I: 1278; grade II: 246; grade III: 23) were treated in two symmetrical areas (mean size 75 cm2 ) of the face or scalp, which were randomized to i) 4% 5-FU creme twice daily for 7 days before a single dPDT procedure and ii) dPDT monotherapy...

Hematoporphyrin injection (HpD) mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) has demonstrated efficacy in treating various types of Bowen's disease, including basal-cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, extramammary Paget's disease, and actinic keratosis. We present a case of a male patient who developed squamous cell carcinoma as a result of repeated instances of arsenic-induced keratosis on both his hands and feet. Due to the involvement of the joint in both hands, the patient declined the conventional surgical resection treatment since it could potentially impact normal physiological function...
