Xin Ge, Peng Li, Zhigang Wu
The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical diagnostic value of combined detection of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) for bacterial infectious diseases in children. It was a case control study carried out from October 2016 to March 2018. A total of 150 children with bacterial infectious disease were assigned to the observation group, and 150 healthy children without infectious diseases were assigned to the control group. The research showed that CRP and PCT levels, positive rates of CRP and PCT detection in observation group were higher than those in control group (p<0...

This is a retrospective audit of all patients admitted to the surgical unit for urosepsis from June 2014 to June 2015 at the General Surgery Unit of Hospital Sultan Ismail, Malaysia. Demographics, comorbidities, presenting symptoms, length of stay (LOS), mortality, and associated risk factors were recorded. There were 35 patients treated for urosepsis with a male preponderance of 21/35 patients. Hypertension (n=18) and diabetes (n=10) were the two most common comorbidities. There were five deaths (mortality rate=14...

Zubair Ahmad, Sidra Arshad, Romana Idrees, Jamshid Abdul-Ghafar, Nasir Ud Din
The importance and frequency of invasive fungal infections in different organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, has increased due to excessive use of aggressive immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory drugs in malignant diseases and organ transplantations as well as increased infections with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Fungal infections in the small intestine or colon are usually part of a disseminated disease process and reach these organs through the bloodstream. Two of the patients were infants 10 and 15 days of age, while one was 23 years old...

Ogilvie syndrome (acute colonic pseudo-obstruction) represents a clinical condition with symptoms of colonic obstruction without a distinct mechanical factor. The damage to the neural ganglia in the intestinal wall is the most likely etiology. A 62-year man was admitted to the Emergency Department due to acute dyspnea and vomiting. The patient had not defecated for 10 days prior to admission. An angio-CT revealed dilated colon, especially its left part, up to 85 mm with gas inside its lumen. During laparotomy, extremely dilated colon was confirmed with signs of the intestinal wall necrosis...

Kesici Ugur
Solitary cecal diverticulum was first described by Potier in 1912. Although it is a rare condition, however, there is an increased prevalence in Asian populations. The cecal diverticula are usually asymptomatic, however, 10-20% of the cases become symptomatic due to complications. The most common diverticulum-related complication is diverticulitis. Other complications include perforation, hemorrhage, and rarely intestinal obstruction. To conclude, cecal diverticulum is a rare condition that usually presents itself with complications...

A young girl presented to us with recurrent diarrhea along with a history of 5 kg weight loss in one year. On examination, she appeared pale, while her laboratory reports showed a low hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and serum albumin. Her erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was slightly raised with her iron profile suggestive of iron deficiency anemia. Viral markers, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) serology along with thyroid profile were all unremarkable. There was no history of tuberculosis, and purified protein derivative (PPD) skin test was also negative...

Subclinical-hypothyroidism is identified as suboptimal thyroid hormonal production associated with mild TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) elevation. Though several non-thyroidal illness in the later stages, medications and dietary supplements may resemble SCH (subclinical-hypothyroidism), but mild persistent subnormal thyroidal pathologies are usually termed as SCH. This review briefly describes the various cardiovascular risk associations with subclinicalhypothyroidism and attempts to provide an insight into the risk and benefit association, which a patient faces once treated for SCH...
