Chest wall tuberculosis is a very rare clinical entity that accounts for 1-5% of musculoskeletal tuberculosis (TB). Here we present a case of chest wall TB. A 16-year-old boy presented with complaints of progressive increasing swelling over the right hemithorax following a history of trauma. Radiologically it was a localized liquid collection with no connection to the thoracic cavity. Pus sample was sent to the mycobacteriology laboratory. The Gene Xpert result came as positive, and sensitive to rifampicin while the acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear test was negative...

PURPOSE: The unavailability of recommended viral transport medium during epidemics of respiratory viral infections is a substantial healthcare concern. It may prompt the use of alternatives, which may give rise to results with questionable validity. The present study was carried out to assess and validate the utility of commonly available solvents in the hospital/healthcare set-ups which may be used as ready and economical alternatives to commercial VTMs. METHODS: To evaluate the readily available solvents as an alternative to VTM, cell culture supernatant of pH1N1 2009 isolate with HA titres of 1:4 and extracted viral RNA of SARS-CoV-2 were spiked in a 1:10 ratio in ethanol, acetone, methanol and were compared to commercially available VTM for detection of influenza virus by real time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR)...

INTRODUCTION: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are a common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accurate identification of the pathogens causing LRTIs is crucial for ensuring of diagnostic and antibiotic stewardship. The Biofire Pneumonia Panel (BFPP) is a molecular diagnostic test that allows rapid detection of various bacterial and viral pathogens. In this study, we compared the performance of BFPP with standard culture methods for the detection of pathogens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Respiratory samples from 70 patient with suspected LRTIs were tested using both BFPP and standard culture methods...

Paeniclostridium sordellii, an anaerobic bacterium, causes hepatic infections in alcoholics and post-surgery (liver transplantation). While liver and brain abscesses are rare, drainage procedures and targeted antibiotic therapy assisted by early microbiological diagnosis have reduced mortality rates. We report a rare case of pyogenic liver abscess caused by Paeniclostridium sordellii in India, the early diagnosis of which has led to life saving outcome for the patient. Hence, the microbiological diagnosis and comprehensive medical-surgical treatment are vital for preventing mortality in Paeniclostridium sordellii infections...

PURPOSE: Candida auris is increasingly being isolated from patients all over the world. It has five clades. In this study, it was aimed to compare the results of biochemical tests obtained using different methods and the antifungal susceptibility profiles of C. auris strains isolated from the first seven cases reported in Türkiye, and evaluate whether this information could be useful as preliminary data in determining the clade of strains in centers that lack the opportunity to apply molecular methods...

PURPOSE: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Mycoplasma hominis (MH), the three most common treatable bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide can lead to many complications if remain untreated. Screening of high-risk population with highly sensitive methods will lead to significant improvement in patient outcomes and will prevent downward transmission. The advantages of Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based assay are not only high sensitivity and specificity, but also detection of multiple organisms in a single reaction which reduce the result turn-around time...

INTRODUCTION: Viridans Group of Streptococci (VGS) are heterogeneous alpha hemolytic Streptococci that form commensal flora in the oral cavity, upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and female genital tract and are potential pathogens that can cause serious infections like infective endocarditis and bacteremia. Penicillin or Ceftriaxone is the recommended first line agent for definitive therapy of VGS endocarditis. Alteration in penicillin binding proteins can decrease the susceptibility of VGS to penicillin and other beta-lactam agents and complicate antimicrobial therapy for serious VGS infections like Infective endocarditis...

Actinomycosis is a rare infection caused by Actinomyces spp. Of all actinomycosis infections, only 5% of Hepatic Actinomycosis (HA) infection has been reported. This disease is often misdiagnosed as a malignancy. This case report presents a 45-year-old woman with diabetes, initially suspected of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, but after careful tissue staining, we found the results supported HA infection.

PURPOSE: Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular zoonotic parasite that can infect all warm-blooded animals, including humans. Currently, clinical findings of toxoplasmosis are being related to T. gondii strains such as Type I genotype may cause high pathogenicity and Type II genotype causes a milder clinical presentation. We have showed in our previous that Type II genotype is the most frequent strain detected in stray cats and wild birds living in natural life of İzmir...

Neisseria sicca, a Gram-negative diplococcus commonly found in the nasopharynx as part of normal bacterial flora, is typically non-pathogenic but has been associated with various diseases including endocarditis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia and meningitis (Jeurissen et al., 2006; Kozlova et al., 2020; Alcid, 1980; Carter et al., 2007). In this report, we present a case of peritonitis in a patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis caused by N. sicca and review the literature on Neisseria-associated peritonitis.

Gordonia bronchialis is an aerobic gram-positive bacilli and also weakly acid fast. It requires a long incubation time and extensive biochemical reactions for identification. Therefore, use of broad-range polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for amplification of genes such as 16S rRNA or hsp65 followed by sequencing or advanced techniques like MALDI-TOF MS is needed for identification. Here, we present a case of persistent sternal wound infection following open heart surgery, caused by G. bronchialis in a 58 years old male, identified using MALDI-TOF MS-based system...

Anti-HCV reactive subjects were selected and relevant data was collected. Viral load and genotype were determined for all patients and were divided into low (<800,000 IU/mL) and high viral load (>800,000 IU/mL). Correlation of viral load with parameters like age, gender, risk factors and genotype etc. was determined by binomial regression. Higher viral load was noted with genotype 4, males and high risk groups like People Who Inject Drugs (PWIDs), blood transfusion before routine testing or frequent transfusion, Intravenous drug therapy and MTP by unregistered medical practitioners (P ≤ 0...
