Health literacy (HL) in children is essential for healthy decision-making from early on. At six Austrian elementary schools, all children (aged 6-11 years) received 3 years of health education (HE). The participating schools were equipped with teaching materials to convey lessons in a child-oriented way. The teachers were professionally accompanied during the implementation process and received specific training. HL and its subprocesses (obtain, understand, comprehend and apply) in children >8 years were measured with a standardized test (QUIGK-K) after 1, 2 and 3 years of education and compared with values from two comparison schools without such lessons...

Innovative approaches addressing the elevated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) or transgender women (TGW) migrants in South Africa are urgently needed. We sought to present the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary efficacy of 'Externalize and Mobilize!', a multi-session arts- and theatre-based HIV prevention group intervention for MSM and TGW migrants in South Africa. Fourteen participants-MSM (n = 7; 50%), genderqueer/nonbinary persons (n = 4; 29%) and TGW (n = 3; 21%)-in Cape Town were recruited and enrolled in the intervention and administered pre- and post-intervention assessments of HIV knowledge, HIV risk-reduction self-efficacy, stigma and resilience...

This randomized controlled trial study aims to examine the flipped classroom model's effects on the knowledge and health beliefs of testicular cancer and testicular self-examination. The study was conducted on 66 students in Northern Cyprus. A descriptive information form, Champion's Health Belief Model Scale, visual analogue scale of satisfaction with the learning method, the knowledge questionnaire on testicular cancer and the testicular self-examination itself were used for data collection. The mean posttest knowledge score of the intervention group (14...

Early intervention to support mental health and well-being of school-aged children may be of significant benefit in preventing escalation of mental health problems in later life. While there are limitations to current understanding of the best ways for schools to support mental well-being, a whole school approach (WSA), involving all those who are part of the school system in creating and sustaining a supportive environment where health is prioritized, may be effective. This research explored stakeholder views of this approach, as part of a contract commissioned by the Welsh Government to conduct an evaluability assessment of a WSA...

Intervention used information technology [short message service (SMS), WhatsApp and website] and interpersonal communication (distribution of SMART Eating kit) and pamphlet for comparison group. Guided by UK Medical Research Council's framework, using embedded mixed-methods design, continuous process evaluation documented fidelity, dose, reach, acceptability and mechanisms...

Adolescents from urban communities are at risk for unhealthy snacking behaviors. Youth advocacy interventions are shown to improve certain adolescent health behaviors, such as substance use. However, it remains unclear if youth advocacy is a feasible method to promote healthy snacking. As such, the aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of a youth advocacy program promoting healthy snacking among adolescents in New York City by conducting a mixed-methods process evaluation. Adolescents (12-18 years) at a Boys and Girls Club in New York City were recruited to participate in a 12-session adaptation of the Youth Engagement and Action for Health! program to advocate for the promotion of healthy snacks in corner stores...

Psychoeducation, where clinicians teach problem-solving skills in a supportive environment, can help address families' social vulnerabilities and promote well-being. Group well-child care (GWCC) may provide unique opportunities for pediatric residents to improve their skills in psychoeducation. Our aim was to characterize pediatric residents' perspectives and experiences of communication while conducting both individual well-child care and GWCC. We used a longitudinal qualitative study design to conduct 15 semistructured interviews with five pediatric residents who facilitated GWCC...

People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds in Australia generally experience poorer health outcomes, explained in part by low levels of health literacy. We conducted a systematic review to examine the development and evaluation of health education resources designed for CaLD populations. Five electronic databases were searched for English language, peer-reviewed studies published between 1980 and 2020. Thirty-four studies met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-four different health education resources were described and broadly categorized into four types: media campaigns (n = 10), text-based materials (n = 5), films (n = 8) and radio (n = 1)...

In 2021, guidelines for early childhood education and care were released recommending children are provided access to outdoor areas during all free play sessions to reduce the risk of coronavirus disease of 2019 transmission, aligning with the existing recommendations to increase children's physical activity. There is a need to understand how to disseminate guidelines in this setting as dissemination is a prerequisite of adoption and implementation. This randomized controlled trial explored the impact of a video-based strategy to disseminate guidelines on family day care educators' intentions to adopt outdoor free play guidelines...

Waterpipe tobacco smoking is a public health concern that poses many of the same health risks as cigarette smoking, especially among young adults-a subpopulation characterized by the highest prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoking. Nevertheless, it remains understudied relative to other forms of tobacco use. We examined sociodemographic, behavioral and cognitive factors associated with young adults' motivation to quit waterpipe smoking using a theory-informed approach. We completed a secondary analysis of baseline data on waterpipe tobacco smoking beliefs and behavior collected from 349 US young adults aged 18-30 years...

The effectiveness of e-cigarettes in smoking cessation is under debate. Informing smokers who are motivated to quit smoking about e-cigarettes may help them to make an informed decision about their use for smoking cessation, which, however, may also lead to unintended effects such as less quitting. This experimental study assessed the influence of providing tailored information about e-cigarettes in a web-based tailored smoking cessation intervention on participants' decision-making and smoking behavior. Adult smokers (N = 331) were randomized into a personalized eHealth intervention on (i) smoking cessation (control condition) or (ii) smoking cessation and information about e-cigarettes (intervention condition)...
