BACKGROUND: It is important to study the clinical profile of pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and assess various prognostic factors implicated in response to induction chemotherapy for optimal treatment outcomes in India. The present study was done to evaluate the clinical profile and to find the correlation of day 7 and day 28 marrow blast response with already established prognostic factors in children with ALL in the region of North India using MCP 841 protocol for all patients...

INTRODUCTION: High-dose chemotherapy with melphalan, followed by autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHCT) remains the standard of care for consolidation therapy of fit patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM), for more than 20 years now. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of NDMM patients who underwent AHCT at our center from 2011 to 2018. Data was undertaken using the hospital electronic medical records (EMR). RESULTS: Among transplant eligible patients (which were 764), 78 patients (10...

PURPOSE: The specific risk factors of metastatic and nonmetastatic esophageal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) are still uncertain. Whether primary site surgery is necessary for all patients with esophageal NEC is unknown. METHODS: Patients with esophageal NEC in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2004 to 2014 were selected. STATA 12 was used to analyze the clinical and pathological features of esophageal NEC. RESULTS: In total, 241 patients with esophageal NEC were included...

AIM: Data on occurrence of pneumothorax after the use of oral pazopanib in advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) with lung metastases are scarce in literature. We aimed to evaluate those in our patients. METHODS: This was a single center retrospective study of incidence of pneumothorax in patients with lung metastases in advanced STS treated with oral pazopanib between July, 2016 and December, 2020. Patients were treated with pazopanib usually from 2nd line onwards with a dose ranging from 400 mg to 800 mg once daily...

BACKGROUND: Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is an uncommon T-cell lymphoma, accounting for 10-15% of pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Outcomes of ALCL have not improved in recent years despite better chemotherapy and supportive care. This study aimed to analyze the clinical profile and outcomes of pediatric ALCL patients at our center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of children with ALCL from July 2017 to December 2019 were reviewed. Their clinical and laboratory details were noted...

BACKGROUND: In advanced-stage epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) standard of care is upfront debulking surgery (UDS) followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. Interval debulking surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NACT-IDS) is a reasonable alternative. METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of patients of Stage III/IV EOC treated either by UDS or NACT-IDS between January 2016 and December 2018 to report the comparison of progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS) of patients with advanced-stage EOC treated with either UDS or NACT-IDS...

BACKGROUND: Current markers (carcinoembryonic antigen [CEA] and carbohydrate antigen 15-3 [CA15-3]) lack sensitivity in diagnosis of breast cancer. The aberrantly expressed circulating miRNAs were shown as diagnostic markers in breast cancer. However, there are very few studies from the Indian population. We studied the diagnostic utility of miRNA-21, miRNA-155 and miRNA-205 compared to CEA and CA15-3 in stage I and II breast cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty newly diagnosed women with stage I/II breast cancer and 20 healthy controls were recruited...

Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare tumor originating from Zimmerman pericytes. It constitutes less than 1% of all intracranial tumors. Because of the high recurrence rates, radiotherapy (RT) is a vital step in the treatment, but the timing and dose remain uncertain. We presented a 39-year-old patient with a high-grade hemangiopericytoma located at the skull base. The patient presented with a severe headache. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a mass of size of 60 × 50 mm. A subtotal resection was performed that confirmed the diagnosis of HPC...

She had multiple thrombotic complications (portal vein thrombosis, small bowel ischemia, and recurrent abortions) at the age of 30 years for which a cause was not identified. She had a long asymptomatic period of 20 years following that and was diagnosed to have essential thrombocytosis (ET) when she was admitted with digital ischemia. PURPOSE: Concurrence of medullary and papillary thyroid carcinoma (MTC and PTC) represents less than 1% of all thyroid malignancies. We aimed to reveal the demographic and clinical characteristics of this rare pathology and to evaluate the effect of the same or contralateral lobular localization of these two malignancies in clinical and laboratory features. Evaluation of progression-free survival (PFS) in current pathology is one of the important features of our study. METHODS: All patients diagnosed with simultaneous MTC and PTC after thyroidectomy were evaluated retrospectively...

The aim of this study is to analyze patients with advanced HCC, in order to determine the incidence of brain metastasis and evaluate the clinicopathologic properties. METHODS: The records of HCC patients treated in our university between 2011 and 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Patient characteristics, symptoms, laboratory data, treatment modalities, and survival after both the diagnosis of HCC and detection of brain metastasis were recorded...

BACKGROUND: In our country, head and neck cancers account for about a third of all cancers. Moreover, the patients typically present in advanced stages, which entails intensive multimodality therapy; but there is not much scope for improved survival outcomes. In view of this, a study was conducted to know the effects of treatment intensification, wherein moderately accelerated fractionation radiotherapy was given to patients presenting with advanced cancer of head and neck. This treatment was further intensified by accompanying radiation with concurrent cisplatin chemotherapy in daily doses...

We present an extremely rare case of intrahepatic splenosis (IHS). On admission and examination, the patient was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and postoperative injury or inflammatory lesions of the pancreas, based on image analysis. Postoperative histopathology showed that the lesions of the liver and diaphragm were of splenic origin, and the pancreatic lesion was identified as a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. The lesson of this case is that if there is a history of splenic rupture or splenectomy, even in the presence of hepatitis or cirrhosis, doctors should be alert to the possibility of IHS...

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is one of the alarming health problems worldwide. Prognostic biomarkers are the key for risk stratification in patients with colon cancer and the decision to recommend adjuvant chemotherapy. It has been difficult to identify a single prognostic biomarker for colon cancer. Currently, tumor stage, tumor grade, and microsatellite instability remain the most important prognostic variables that aid in the treatment of patients with colon cancer. Some studies highlighted that CDX2 immunohistochemistry negativity is an independent prognostic factor and indicates a worse survival rate...

Radical prostatectomy (RP) constitutes the primary treatment option for patients with clinically localized, biopsy-proven prostate cancer that requires local treatment with curative intent. Accurate reporting of radical prostatectomy specimens is required to guide further risk stratification and management of patients. Hence, for the handling and reporting of RP specimens, a standardized protocol should be followed. Many general pathologists may not be well--versed with the guidelines for the handling of radical prostatectomy specimens...
