OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer in low- and middle-income countries, despite being preventable. Uganda, which lacks an effective screening program, has one of the highest global cervical cancer incidence rates. Mobile health (mHealth) technology has the potential to improve healthcare-seeking behaviors and access. The present study describes the connection between mobile phone access and healthcare-seeking behaviors in rural Uganda. METHODS: Women were eligible for this cross-sectional study if they had no prior screening or treatment for cervical cancer in the past 5 years, were aged 30 to 49 years old, and were residents of the South Busoga Forest reserve...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of uterine ruptures, clinical characteristics, and maternal and neonatal outcomes in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: Information on complete uterine rupture between July 2010 and June 2022 was investigated retrospectively at a tertiary center. RESULTS: There were 42 cases of complete uterine rupture in 144 474 deliveries, with an incidence rate of 0.029%. Twenty-seven cases had a scarred uterus and 15 had an unscarred uterus; Rupture of the lower uterine segment was predominant in the scarred uterus, whereas rupture of the body of the uterus was predominant in the non-scarred uterus (P ≤ 0...

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Implementing active management in the third stage of labor has significantly reduced the incidence of PPH. Thus, understanding the level of healthcare providers' knowledge of active management in the third stage of labor can inform guidelines, policies, and practices for effectively preventing PPH. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to assess the level of healthcare providers' knowledge and associated factors of active management in the third stage of labor in sub-Saharan Africa...

Lynch syndrome, also called hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer, is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by germline pathogenic mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes-resulting in increased susceptibility to colorectal, endometrial, and other tumors. This case report presents an incidental finding of endometrial cancer with Lynch syndrome during investigation for primary infertility. A 34-year-old woman presented to the fertility clinic with unexplained primary infertility. Investigations showed possible endometrial polyp, 13 × 11 mm in size...

Osseous metaplasia of the endometrium is a rare entity in which there is presence of mature or immature bone tissue in the endometrium. It is a rare disorder that usually leads to secondary infertility and is frequently associated with recurrent miscarriages and can be rarely asymptomatic. We present the case of a patient with endometrial ossification associated with secondary infertility. The patient presented with excessive vaginal discharge and was undergoing evaluation for secondary infertility. Transvaginal sonography showed a hyperechoic elongated lesion in the endometrium suggestive of endometrial calcification with posterior acoustic shadowing...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether treatment with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) for chemotherapy-induced anemia affects progression-free survival (PFS) in patients receiving front-line chemotherapy following surgery for ovarian cancer (OC). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all consecutive patients who received front-line chemotherapy after surgery between 2013 and 2019 at six institutions. The patients were divided according to the use of ESAs during front-line chemotherapy...

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between adenomyosis and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) and to evaluate the effect of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in mediating this association. METHODS: We retrieved data for singleton women from the Japanese nationwide perinatal registry between 2013 and 2019, excluding women with a history of adenomyomectomy. To investigate the association between adenomyosis and PAS among women, we used a multivariable logistic regression model with multiple imputation for missing data...

OBJECTIVES: Acute hemorrhage can cause significant morbidity and mortality arising from trauma, bleeding disorders, surgical procedures, or obstetric complications. Surgical hemostasis methods may fail to stop acute bleeding due to the complex bleeding dynamics of each bleeding type. Therefore, developing safe and effective topical hemostatic agents remains crucial. The human amniotic membrane (hAM) has established clinical evidence of effectiveness in promoting wound healing and tissue regeneration...

OBJECTIVE: Global variations in women's health outcomes, increased international migration, and an increase in the number of medical schools underpin the need for global standardization in obstetrics and gynecology curricula for medical students. However, there are currently no recommendations regarding the content of a common curriculum. The aim of this project was to agree the objectives for a common curriculum in obstetrics and gynecology for medical students globally. METHODS: The curriculum was developed and agreed by an international taskforce of obstetricians and gynecologists...

OBJECTIVE: This study will evaluate whether fetal cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) can predict perinatal adverse outcomes in singleton pregnancies with mild and moderate idiopathic polyhydramnios (IP). METHOD: This study was designed as a prospective case-control study between January 2023 and November 2023. Pregnant women diagnosed with mild-to-moderate IP and low-risk singleton pregnancies were included in the study. In all cases, umbilical artery (UA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) pulsatility indices (PIs) were measured at 36-40 weeks of gestation, and CPR was calculated...

OBJECTIVE: Real-world data on cardiopulmonary events among pregnant women receiving β-agonist therapy are scarce. In the present study, we aimed to examine the absolute and relative risks of maternal cardiopulmonary events associated with the use of β-agonist ritodrine during pregnancy. METHODS: By linking Taiwan's National Birth Certificate Application Database with National Health Insurance data, 1 831 564 pregnancies at ≥20 weeks' gestation were identified...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) model for first-trimester screening for pre-eclampsia in a large Asian population. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a multicenter prospective cohort study in 10 935 participants with singleton pregnancies attending for routine pregnancy care at 11-13+6  weeks of gestation in seven regions in Asia between December 2016 and June 2018. We applied the AI+ML model for the first-trimester prediction of preterm pre-eclampsia (<37 weeks), term pre-eclampsia (≥37 weeks), and any pre-eclampsia, which was derived and tested in a cohort of pregnant participants in the UK (Model 1)...

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate low-dose oral misoprostol induction, and compare different methods used in second-line induction in patients with a Bishop score less than 6. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed the medical history and courses of pregnancy of all patients induced with first-line of low-dose oral misoprostol (50 μg every 4 h with a total of 200 μg/24 h) from April 2021 to June 2022 in a university hospital center, and reported outcomes according to the second-line method of induction...

BACKGROUND: Vulvodynia (VVD) is a debilitating chronic vulvar pain significantly affecting patients' quality of life. Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic and complex illness characterized by an unpleasant sensation related to the filling of the bladder and it strongly impacts patients' lives. The exact mechanisms of the two syndromes remain unknown, but there is an overlap between suspected pathophysiologies. OBJECTIVE: To present an overview of the current research on the association between VVD and IC/BPS...
