PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Shock occurs because of a failure to deliver adequate oxygen to meet the metabolic demands of the body resulting in metabolic acidosis, inflammation, and coagulopathy. Resuscitation is the process of treating shock in an attempt to restore normal physiology.
