The diagnosis of prurigo nodularis is mainly clinical, based on its distinctive features. However, in some cases it may be difficult to differentiate it from other nodular dermatoses only on the clinical basis, thus requiring histopathological examination to reach a definitive diagnosis. The aim of this study was to describe for the first time the dermoscopic features of prurigo nodularis and the useful contribution of dermoscopy in the differential diagnosis of such dermatoses. Fourteen patients with histopathologically proven prurigo nodularis were included in the study...

Over the course of their nearly 30-year history, the ABCD(E) criteria have been used globally in medical education and in the lay press to provide simple parameters for assessment of pigmented lesions that need to be further evaluated by a dermatologist. In this article, the efficacy and limitations of the ABCDE criteria as both a clinical tool and a public message will be reviewed.

Thalidomide is resurging in the management of adult rheumatologic skin conditions, especially lupus erythematosus. Although use in pediatric patients is reported since the 1990s, there are no systematic reviews describing treatment in children. Thalidomide has immunomodulatory and anti-tumor necrosis factor-α effects as well as antiangiogenic properties, making it useful for a broad spectrum of inflammatory disorders. Thalidomide is second-line treatment for aphthous stomatitis and chronic graft-versus-host disease in children and has been prescribed for many other conditions including actinic prurigo and epidermolysis bullosa pruriginosa...

BACKGROUND: Naevoid melanoma (NeM), a rare variant of melanoma, can be difficult to detect as its clinical and histopathological morphology can simulate a naevus. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical and dermoscopic features associated with NeM. METHODS: Lesions with a histopathological diagnosis of NeM were collected via an e-mail request sent to all members of the International Dermoscopy Society. All lesions were histopathologically reviewed and only lesions fulfilling a set of predefined histopathological criteria were included in the study and analysed for their clinical and dermoscopic features...

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common cancer capable of metastasis. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) may be a valuable adjunct for patients with cSCC at high risk for metastasis. However, data on risk factors for metastasis and results of SLNB from patients with cSCC are limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate risk factors for metastasis in patients with cSCC in a large cohort study with long-term follow-up and to determine the value of SLNB...

BACKGROUND: Ex vivo fluorescence confocal microscopy (FCM) permits real-time imaging of freshly excised skin tissues. Its usefulness as a time-sparing alternative to frozen sections in Mohs surgery of basal cell carcinoma is well documented. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe the ex vivo FCM features of a series of benign and malignant nonpigmented tumours of the nail unit, and to correlate them with conventional histopathology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nail apparatus tumours from 10 patients were imaged during surgical exploration using ex vivo FCM after immersion in acridine orange...

BACKGROUND: Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare cutaneous malignancy that is usually treated with surgery. Patients with positive surgical margins require adjuvant therapy, but there have been few reports on the use of radiation therapy. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of postoperative radiation therapy in EMPD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with EMPD involving the genitalia underwent radiation therapy as adjuvant therapy after surgery...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of short-contact administration of topical tretinoin on foot ulcers in patients with diabetes. DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. SETTING: Outpatient clinic at a Veterans Affairs medical center. PATIENTS: Twenty-four volunteers with diabetic foot ulcers but without evidence of peripheral arterial disease or infection. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomized to 4 weeks of daily treatment with either topical 0...
