Cerebral dysfunction caused by traumatic brain injury may adversely affect cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation leading to worse outcomes if oxygen capacity is decreased due to anemia. In a randomized clinical trial of 200 patients comparing transfusion thresholds <7 g/dl versus 10 g/dl, where transfusion of leukoreduced packed red blood cells was used to maintain the assigned hemoglobin threshold, no long-term neurological difference was detected. The current study examines secondary outcome measures of intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), and brain tissue oxygenation (PbtO2) in patients enrolled in this randomized clinical trial...

BACKGROUND: Detecting occult bleeding can be challenging and may delay resuscitation. The Shock Index (SI) defined as heart rate divided by systolic blood pressure has attracted attention. Prediction models using combinations of pre-hospital SI (phSI) and the trauma centre SI (tcSI) values may be effective in identifying patients requiring massive blood transfusions (MT). AIM: To explore whether combinations of the phSI and the tcSI augment MT prediction. METHODS: The scores were retrospectively developed using all major trauma patients that presented to The Alfred Hospital between 2006 and 2012...

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate potential reduction in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) after a mild to moderate trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Follow-up study of a cohort of 153 trauma patients admitted to the High Dependency Unit of the Emergency Department of the University-Hospital of Florence from July 2008 to February 2012. After 6 months from the event, a telephone interview using the Physical (PCS) and Mental (MCS) Health Composite Score (SF12) was conducted...
