Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the major disorders of the urinary system in elderly men. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the main component of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) and has nerve protective, anti-inflammatory and tumour-growth inhibitory effects. Here, the therapeutic potential of DHA in treating BPH was investigated. Seal oil effectively prevented the development of prostatic hyperplasia induced by oestradiol/testosterone in a rat model by suppressing the increase of the prostatic index (PI), reducing the thickness of the peri-glandular smooth muscle layer, inhibiting the proliferation of both prostate epithelial and stromal cells, and downregulating the expression of androgen receptor (AR) and oestrogen receptor α (ERα)...

One of the most common hepatic manifestations of the metabolic syndrome is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This disease varies from simple steatosis to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Different molecules secreted from adipose tissue such as adiponectin, leptin, resistin and visfatin and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor-α, and interleukins, can be involved in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. In this review we describe the role of these adipokines and cytokines in the pathogenesis of NAFLD...

The signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) pathway is one of the main growth factor‑mediated signal transduction pathways and is closely associated with the occurrence and development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Qianliening capsules (QC) have significant therapeutic effects on BPH; however, the precise mechanism underlying its anti‑BPH activity remains to be elucidated. To further elucidate the molecular mechanism of the therapeutic effect of QC on BPH, the present study used epidermal growth factor (EGF), which has a role in the pathogenesis of BPH, to stimulate the growth of human prostate WPMY‑1 cells and activate the STAT3 pathway in the WPMY‑1 cells...

AIM: The present study was designed to investigate the effect of leptin on estrogen metabolism in prostatic cells. MAIN METHODS: Malignant (PC-3) and benign (BPH-1) human prostate cells were treated with 17-β-hydroxyestradiol (1 μM) alone or in combination with leptin (0.4, 4, 40 ng/ml) for 72 h. Cell proliferation assay, immunocytochemical staining of estrogen receptor (ER), liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method (LC-MS) and semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were used...
