BACKGROUND: The AABB (formerly, the American Association of Blood Banks) developed this guideline on appropriate use of platelet transfusion in adult patients. METHODS: These guidelines are based on a systematic review of randomized, clinical trials and observational studies (1900 to September 2014) that reported clinical outcomes on patients receiving prophylactic or therapeutic platelet transfusions. An expert panel reviewed the data and developed recommendations using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework...

IMPORTANCE: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (AGB) are 2 of the most commonly performed bariatric procedures worldwide. However, few large, multisite studies have directly compared the benefits and harms of these procedures. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of laparoscopic RYGB vs AGB on short- and long-term health outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study of 7457 individuals 21 years or older who underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery from January 1, 2005, through December 31, 2009, with follow-up through December 31, 2010...

OBJECTIVE: Variations of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) are well represented in literature but with conflicting reports about the types and variations. Using EMG, the cricothyroid compound muscle action potential (CMAP) was recorded, to identify the EBSLN and classified them according to clinical variation during routine thyroid operations. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: There is increasing awareness among patients and physicians of the consequences of injury to the external laryngeal nerve in thyroid surgeries...
