Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a far reaching condition that has a number of reproductive and general health implications. There has been much debate in recent years about the diagnosis and definition of PCOS and a plethora of studies assessing its management, ranging from the psychosocial aspects of the conditions, to the treatment of hyperandrogenism, anovulatory infertility, and the long-term metabolic and reproductive consequences. There has been a need to synthesise the evidence and produce an international consensus guideline for all aspects of the management of PCOS and this was achieved with the publication of the International evidence-based guideline for the assessment and management of polycystic ovary syndrome ...

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogenous disorder associated with clinical, endocrine and ultrasonographic features that can also be encountered in a number of other diseases. It has traditionally been suggested that prolactin excess, enzymatic steroidogenic abnormalities and thyroid disorders need to be excluded before a diagnosis of PCOS is made. CONTEXT: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common complex genetic disease. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, gonadotropin secretory changes, polycystic ovarian morphology, and insulin resistance. The etiology of PCOS remains unknown, but modern genetic approaches, such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS), Mendelian randomization, and next-generation sequencing, promise to identify the pathways that are primarily disrupted. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The literature on PCOS, including the author's research, is discussed...

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or the potential diagnosis of PCOS, is one of the most common reasons for adolescent girls to present to endocrinology clinics. A diagnosis of PCOS has the potential to affect the young person, not only physically, but psychologically and socially. It is important we have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to work effectively with young people to address their concerns and meet their information needs. Successful engagement and management of adolescents with PCOS may have implications in adult life...
