METHOD: This study forms part of a larger evaluation of general practice registrar burnout and wellbeing. Feedback on preliminary guidelines developed from this evaluation was sought through two rounds of consultation within one regional training organisation. Qualitative data were thematically analysed. RESULTS: Themes focused on enhancing participants' awareness of resources, providing practical guidance and prioritising burnout prevention. A refined list of strategies and preliminary conceptual framework for registrars, practices, training organisations and the broader medical system were developed...

BACKGROUND: Acute bronchitis is one of the most frequent diagnoses in primary care. Scientifically, it is conceptualized as a viral infection. Still, general practitioners (GPs) often prescribe antibiotics for acute bronchitis. The explanation for this discrepancy may lie in a different conceptualization of acute bronchitis. Therefore, we wanted to know, how GPs conceptualize acute bronchitis, and how they differentiate it from common cold and pneumonia. Furthermore, we tried to find out the GPs' reasons for prescribing antibiotics in those cases...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There have been calls for a Medicare Benefits Schedule rebate to support a young person's health assessment in general practice. The aim of this study was to understand Victorian providers' needs and perspectives about implementing young people's health assessments in general practice. METHOD: Focus groups and interviews were conducted over Zoom with current general practitioners (GPs), practice nurses (PNs) and practice managers (PMs)...

BACKGROUND: The treatment of alcohol and other drugs (AOD)-related issues is an essential skill for all general practitioners (GPs). The ongoing harm and significant burden of disease experienced by people who use AOD, as well as the impact of this on their families and communities, displays the need for engagement and upskilling in this clinical area. OBJECTIVE: Provide GPs with a clear and practical approach to supporting patients who use AOD. DISCUSSION: Historically, AOD use has been associated with shame, societal judgement and a punitive treatment approach...

BACKGROUND: Domestic violence is a significant public health issue with survivors experiencing short- and long-term physical, sexual and psychological health issues. Given this, survivors of domestic violence use healthcare services at an increased rate compared to the general population. Therefore, general practitioners (GPs) are well placed to support survivors of domestic violence. However, many practitioners do not feel ready to address this complex issue of domestic violence. Further, there is no research exploring GPs' role in supporting families through family court in the context of domestic violence...

METHOD: The PUSH! Audit was a cross-sectional study performed from May 2019 to May 2021. With each audit submitted, general practitioners (GPs) were asked about the impact of their engagement with their patients. RESULTS: In all, 144 audit responses were collected, with 81.6% of audits showing a change in behaviour. The changes noted were better monitoring (71.3%), treatment of adverse effects (64.4%), modified use (44.4%) and stopped use (12.2%). DISCUSSION: This study asking GPs about outcomes with each of their patients using non-prescribed PIEDs has shown significant changes in behaviour...

BACKGROUND: The relationship between supervisors and residents plays a prominent role in the professional development of general practice (GP) residents. When disruptions occur in the normal course of healthcare, due to effects of e.g. war or emerging epidemics, we need to consider how this may affect the training of the next generation of general practitioners. As both supervisors and residents face new and unprecedented challenges that impact overall quality of the training. In this study, we examined the characteristics of the supervisory relationship in GP training during the disruptions early on during COVID-19...

BACKGROUND: While frank discussion of suicidal thoughts in patients with depression is important for the prevention of suicide, suicide exploration of General Practitioners (GPs) is suboptimal. This study aimed to assess whether an intervention that prompts pop-up screens nudges GPs to more frequently explore suicidal thoughts over the course of two years. METHODS: From January 2017 to December 2018, the intervention was incorporated in the information system of the Dutch general practice sentinel network...

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological interventions are the most used treatment for low back pain (LBP). Use of evidence from systematic reviews of the effects of pharmacological interventions for LBP published in the Cochrane Library, is limited by lack of a comprehensive overview. OBJECTIVES: To summarise the evidence from Cochrane Reviews of the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of systemic pharmacological interventions for adults with non-specific LBP. METHODS: The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was searched from inception to 3 June 2021, to identify reviews of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated systemic pharmacological interventions for adults with non-specific LBP...

BACKGROUND: Due to their fast turnaround time and user-friendliness, point-of-care tests (POCTs) possess a great potential in primary care. The purpose of the study was to assess general practitioners' (GPs) perspectives on POCT use in German primary care, including utilization, limitations and requirements. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey study among GPs in Germany (federal states of Thuringia, Bremen and Bavaria (Lower Franconia), study period: 04/22-06/2022)...

BACKGROUND: Since 2020, physicians in Germany can prescribe approved digital health applications (DHAs) with the costs covered by the health system. There has so far been a lack of studies on attitudes and experiences amongst GPs in using DHAs. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to elucidate the experiences and observations of GPs that have used DHAs in health care and to examine the conditions necessary for DHAs to gain a foothold in primary care according to the GPs. METHODS: In 2022, 96 qualitative semi-standardised interviews were conducted with German GPs with experience in prescribing DHAs...

BACKGROUND: Several preventive medications and supplements become inappropriate in the last phase of life due to increased risk of adverse events caused by changed pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, and changed care goals. Information on these preventive medication and supplements use in patients with a life-limiting illness in the home-care setting is limited. The primary aim of this study was to assess the use of four different groups of preventive drugs and supplements, which are inappropriate in adult patients with a life-limiting illness, living at home in the last year of life...

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) is rising. Amongst women, STIs are often asymptomatic and thus likely underreported. STI care in Germany is fragmented. General Practitioners (GPs) could offer accessible care; however, to which extent GPs provide STI care and which challenges they face remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To increase understanding of how GPs provide STI care for women in German high-incidence settings and to identify challenges and opportunities for improved care...
