BACKGROUND: Squatting is a core exercise for many purposes. The tissue loading during squatting is crucial for positive adaptation and to avoid injury. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of narrow, hip and wide stance widths, foot position angles (0°, 21°, and 42°), strength exercise experience, and barbell load (0 and 50% body weight, experts only) during squatting. METHODS: Novice ( N  = 21) and experienced ( N  = 21) squatters performed 9 different variations of squats (3 stance widths, 3 foot placement angles)...

Novel approaches to the prevention of microbial infections after the insertion of orthopedic external fixators are in great demand because of the extremely high incidence rates of such infections, which can reach up to 100% with longer implant residence times. Monolaurin is an antimicrobial agent with a known safety record that is broadly used in the food and cosmetic industries; however, its use in antimicrobial coatings of medical devices has not been studied in much detail. Here, we report the use of monolaurin as an antibacterial coating on external fixators for the first time...

BACKGROUND: Infected nonunion of the femoral shaft is uncommon, and usually presents with challenging therapeutic and reconstructive problems. There are still controversies over treating infected nonunion of the femoral shaft. The purposes of this retrospective study were to review the treatment outcomes and describe a staged protocol for spontaneous wound healing. METHODS: Six patients with chronic femoral shaft infected-nonunion from October 2002 to September 2010 were included in this retrospective study...

BACKGROUND: Minimalist shoes have been popularized as a safe alternative to conventional running shoes. However, a paucity of research is available investigating the longer-term safety of minimalist shoes. PURPOSE: To compare running-related pain and injury between minimalist and conventional shoes in trained runners and to investigate interactions between shoe type, body mass, and weekly training distance. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial; Level of evidence, 2...

BACKGROUND: Despite a rapidly growing body of research, a systematic evidence compilation of the risk and protective factors for middle- and long-distance running-related injury (RRI) was lacking. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to compile the evidence about modifiable and non-modifiable training-related and behavioral risk and protective factors for middle- and long-distance RRI. METHODS: We searched five databases (PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, and PsycINFO) for the dates 1 January 1970 to 31 December 2015, inclusive, for original peer-reviewed articles...

KEY POINTS: Cold water immersion and active recovery are common post-exercise recovery treatments. A key assumption about the benefits of cold water immersion is that it reduces inflammation in skeletal muscle. However, no data are available from humans to support this notion. We compared the effects of cold water immersion and active recovery on inflammatory and cellular stress responses in skeletal muscle from exercise-trained men 2, 24 and 48 h during recovery after acute resistance exercise...
