Admiral nurses competency project.

The Admiral nurses competency project was funded by the Dementia Relief Trust and carried out by the RCN Gerontological Nursing Programme (GNP) over 20 months. Working with the Admiral nurses, part-time project facilitators used an action research approach to develop a competency framework with higher level competencies. Last year we described the methods being used ( Traynor and Dewing 2001 ). This article describes the final stages and implications of the work for specialist practitioners and nurses working with people with dementia and their carers.
