Study Pertaining to the Hypothermic Activity of Plumeria rubra, Linn in PGE1 and TAB-Vaccine Induced Pyrexia Models in Rabbits.
West Indian Medical Journal 2015 August 13
Objective: Plumeria rubra, Linn is a potent medicinal plant in the global systems of medicine. The objective of the present work was to study the antipyretic activity of the plant: Plumeria rubra, Linn is belonging to the family Apocynaceae.
Materials and Methods: In the present study the methanolic extracts of the bark of Plumeria rubra, Linn were studied for their antipyretic activity by Typhoid vaccine (TAB) and Prostaglandin E (PGE1) induced pyrexia in rabbits.
Result: In TAB vaccine-induced fever, the fever was significantly reduced and the body temperature was normalized by administration of 100 and 200 mg/kg dose orally and the hypothermic property was comparable to the reference drug (Paracetamol). On the other hand, pyrexia induced by PGE1 was significantly reduced as compared to the standard drug (Aspirin).
Conclusion: This study has established the hypothermic activity of: Plumeria rubra, Linn and thus, justifies the anecdotal, folkloric and ethnomedical uses of this plant for fever.
