The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Formation of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

At the turn of the 20th century, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology joined the American Ophthalmological Society and the Section on Ophthalmology of the American Medical Association to form America's first board for the certification of medical specialists, the American Board of Ophthalmology. Academy leaders helped pave the way for the development of rigorous standards for the training of ophthalmologists and pushed for the advancement of excellence within the profession.
