[Clinical value of 18F-FDG-PET and 11C-MET-PET in patients with plasma cell malignancy].
Nihon Rinsho. Japanese Journal of Clinical Medicine 2015 January
FDG-PET/CT is useful for the imaging of various malignancies including plasma cell malignancy. In multiple myeloma, FDG-PET has recently been used not only for staging but also for prediction of prognosis. FDG is a widely accepted tracer based on high glucose metabolism in malignant cells. However, myeloma cells are sometimes not avid for FDG. A radiolabelled tracer of 11C-methionine is abundantly incorporated into cells with high amino acid metabolism. Therefore, it is reasonable that 11C-methionine-PET is useful in myeloma, since myeloma cells usually produce a large amount of immunoglobulins. In this chapter, we explained of the features of 18F-FDG-PET and 11C-methionine-PET. Moreover, we demonstrated two case reports suggestive of the clinical advantage of 11C-methionine-PET in myeloma.
