[Congenital cytomegalovirus infection in newborn infants from the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of congenital cytomegalovirus infection in newborn infants included in the neonatal screening program coordinated by the State Health Services in San Luis Potosí.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated the presence of cytomegalovirus in blood samples stored in filter paper.
RESULTS: Cytomegalovirus was detected in 10 (0.68%) of the 1,457 samples included in the study. There were no differences in the characteristics of infants with congenital infection compared to those without infection.
CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to increase awareness of health professionals regarding the prevalence and impact of congenital cytomegalovirus infection.
