OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of depression related to precarious employment (PE) has become a significant public health concern, given the declining trend of the standard employment relationship. Research has focused on the mental health detrimental effects of employment conditions, whereas there is scarce evidence concerning the burden of depression that could be prevented by targeting precariousness. This paper estimates the impact of PE on the risk of depression and the attributable fraction within the active and working salaried population in Spain...

This study analyzes air pollution through the effects of China's FDI in 27 European countries over a 20-year period, with a focus on the impact of environmental tax revenues (ETRs) and the environmental context in China. The relationship is estimated through spatial regressions that account for the presence of air pollutants in neighboring countries. The findings suggest that China's FDI in Europe does not contribute to air pollution but rather has a positive impact. The presence of environmental charges filters out non-polluting investments, which has a non-linear relationship with PM2...

INTRODUCTION: Experimental data show that large-pored meshes reduce foreign body reaction, inflammation and scar bridging and thus improve mesh integration. However, clinical data on the effect of mesh porosity on the outcome of hernioplasty are limited. This study investigated the relation of pore size in polypropylene meshes to the outcome of Lichtenstein inguinal hernioplasty using data from the Herniamed registry. METHODS: This analysis of data from the Herniamed registry evaluated perioperative and 1-year follow-up outcomes in patients undergoing elective, primary, unilateral Lichtenstein inguinal hernia repair using polypropylene meshes...

Over the past decade, British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province, has begun developing liquified natural gas (LNG) mega projects that can transport Canadian resources to foreign markets across the Pacific region. These projects have gained significant profile due to high-level debates over their environmental, social and economic impacts. While LNG projects are required to undergo environmental impact assessment procedures, there is growing recognition of the need to ensure that positive social, economic and environmental impacts are fairly distributed to local communities...

Osteolytic lesions refer to the destruction of any part of bone due to a disease process (pertaining to dissolution of bone, especially loss of calcium). Osteomyelitis is the inflammation of the bone caused by an infecting organism. Although bone is normally resilient to bacterial colonization, events such as trauma, surgery, infections, the presence of foreign bodies, and anemia may disrupt bony integrity and lead to the onset of bone infections. Sometimes, osteomyelitis causes no signs and symptoms or the signs and symptoms are hard to distinguish from other problems...

MATERIALS AND METHOD: A prospective study was conducted comprising 60 patients who sustained maxillofacial trauma and underwent ORIF in our unit previously and who required hardware retrieval in the post-operative phase. The retrieved hardware was evaluated for surface and compositional changes with the help of a scanning electron microscope for surface roughness and corrosion changes...

This paper examines the effect of green foreign direct investment (GFDI) on environmental quality (EQ) in 34 less-developed countries (LDCs) from 2003 to 2021. We analyze balanced panel data using Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) and Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE). Our findings reveal several vital insights: (1) GFDI helps improve EQ. (2) Environmental costs associated with economic growth are negative. (3) Trade openness positively influences EQ. (4) EQ is enhanced by institutional quality, energy use, and population expansion in the chosen countries...

Due to its importance in animal feed, soybean meal has been extensively studied to optimize its use in livestock diets. Despite extensive research, the industry has not fully characterized specific areas of soybean processing such as the inclusion of soybean byproducts added back to soybean meal during processing. Soybean processing byproducts can encompass a large variety of materials including weeds and foreign material, soybean hulls, gums, soapstocks, lecithins, spent bleaching clays, and deodorizer distillates...

Hematopoietic stem cell donation is a method used to treat both blood-related and non-blood-related malignancies. Graft-versus-host disease is a potentially life-threatening complication that can occur following a stem cell transplant from a donor. This happens after the transplanted grafts attack the recipient's body as foreign cells, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Clinically, this condition can be classified as acute or chronic based on onset and pathophysiology. This review aims to provide an overview of recent studies on extracorporeal photopheresis as a treatment strategy option for graft-versus-host-diseased patients...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence, risk factors, and salvage management of retrievable covered expandable metallic stent (RCEMS) migration in patients with persistent benign ureter strictures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 117 consecutive patients who underwent implantation of RCEMS. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify prognostic factors for stent migration, including stricture location and length, hydronephrosis-cortex ratio, ureteral dilation, and the diameter of the narrowest portion of the stricture...

The intranasal (IN) route of administration is important for topical drugs and drugs intended to act systemically. More recently, direct nose-to-brain input was considered to bypass the blood-brain barrier.Processes related to IN absorption and nose-to-brain distribution are complex and depend, sometimes in contrasting ways, on chemico-physical and structural parameters of the compounds, and on formulation options.Due to the intricacies of these processes and despite the large number of articles published on many different IN compounds, it appears that absorption after IN dosing is not yet fully understood...

Post-traumatic peritendinous adhesion presents a significant challenge in clinical medicine. This study proposes the use of diamond-like carbon (DLC) deposited on polylactic acid (PLA) membranes as a biophysical mechanism for anti-adhesion barrier to encase ruptured tendons in tendon-injured rats. The results indicate that PLA/DLC composite membrane exhibits more efficient anti-adhesion effect than PLA membrane, with histological score decreasing from 3.12 ± 0.27 to 2.20 ± 0...

This case report describes a unique instance of small bowel perforation in a 49-year-old woman caused by an ingested toothpick. Initially suspected of colonic diverticulitis, a final diagnosis of small bowel perforation was made later, and the toothpick was successfully removed via endoscopy. This case emphasizes the need to consider foreign body ingestion in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain and demonstrates the feasibility of conservative endoscopic approaches in similar cases.

INTRODUCTION: The seeds used in brachytherapy for prostate cancer may migrate through the surrounding venous plexus to other sites in the body, most commonly to the pulmonary vasculature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old Japanese man received iodine-125 low-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy. Computed tomography revealed that one seed had migrated to the right kidney. No seed was observed in the ureter upon ureteroscopy. Transesophageal echocardiography confirmed a right-to-left shunt due to a patent foramen ovale, suggesting that the seed had migrated into the right renal artery...

BACKGROUND: Cancer immunotherapy has emerged as a transformative approach for treating various malignancies, including melanoma, lung cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia. Animal models have been instrumental in elucidating the mechanisms and potential of these therapies. However, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is an inherent challenge in these studies, primarily because the introduction of foreign immune cells or tissues often triggers immune responses. METHODS: A detailed systematic search was conducted across various scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science...

BACKGROUND: Recent literature highlights anomalous cranial nerves in the sinonasal region, notably in the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses, linked to anatomical factors. However, data on the suspended infraorbital canal (IOC) variant is scarce in cross-sectional imaging. Anatomical variations in the sphenoid sinuses, including optic, maxillary, and vidian nerves, raise interest among specialists involved in advanced sinonasal procedures. The infraorbital nerve's (ION) course along the orbital floor and its abnormal positioning within the orbital and maxillary sinus region pose risks of iatrogenic complications...
