OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to describe the clinical picture and progression in cats with alpha-chloralose (AC) intoxication and to determine if treatment with intravenous (IV) lipid emulsion (ILE) influenced either the serum concentration of AC or the clinical signs. METHODS: Cats with suspected AC poisoning admitted to a university small animal hospital were included. The cats were randomised into two groups: one receiving 20% ILE at a dose of 300 mg/kg as a 2 min bolus, followed by a 1500 mg/kg continuous rate infusion over 30 mins (IL+ group) and the other receiving IV fluid therapy with Ringer's acetate (IL- group)...

AIMS: Hypertriglyceridemia is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and might contribute to its pathogenesis either directly or through elevation of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs). This study aimed at comparing the glucometabolic effects of acute hypertriglyceridemia alone or combined with NEFA elevation in non-diabetic subjects. METHODS: Twenty-two healthy lean volunteers underwent two 5-h intravenous infusions of either saline or Intralipid, without (n=12) or with heparin (I+H; n=10) to activate the release of NEFAs...

Insulin resistance is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and exercise can improve insulin sensitivity. However, following exercise high circulating fatty acid (FA) levels might counteract this. We hypothesized that such inhibition would be reduced by forcibly increasing carbohydrate oxidation through pharmacological activation of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). Insulin-stimulated glucose uptake was examined with a cross-over design in healthy young men (n = 8) in a previously exercised and a rested leg during a hyperinsulinemiceuglycemic clamp five hours after one-legged exercise with: 1) infusion of saline, 2) infusion of intralipid imitating circulating FA levels during recovery from whole-body exercise, and 3) infusion of intralipid + oral PDC-activator, dichloroacetate (DCA)...

OBJECTIVES: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is used for patients of varying ages with intestinal failure to supplement calories. Premature newborns with low birth weight are at a high risk for developing PN associated liver disease (PNALD) including steatosis, cholestasis, and gallbladder sludge/stones. To optimize nutrition regimens, models are required to predict PNALD. METHODS: We have exploited induced pluripotent stem cell derived liver organoids to provide a testing platform for PNALD...

BACKGROUND: Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) is rare, but fatal; the current widely used treatment is lipid emulsion (LE). The goal of this study was to analyze and review case reports on LE treatment for LAST in pediatric patients. METHODS: We performed a systematic review using case reports on LE treatment for LAST in pediatric patients, searching PubMed and Scopus databases to March 2023 using the following keywords: ("local anesthetic toxicity" OR "local anesthetic systemic toxicity" OR LAST") AND ("newborn" OR "infant" OR "child" OR "children" OR "adolescent" OR "pediatric") AND ("lipid emulsion" OR "Intralipid")...

Lipid emulsion has been shown to effectively relieve refractory cardiovascular collapse resulting from toxic levels of nonlocal anesthetics. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of lipid emulsions on neuropsychiatric drug-induced toxicity using relevant case reports of human patients, with a particular focus on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score and corrected QT interval, to analyze drugs that frequently require lipid emulsion treatment. The following keywords were used to retrieve relevant case reports from PubMed: "antidepressant or antipsychotic drug or amitriptyline or bupropion or citalopram or desipramine or dosulepin or dothiepin or doxepin or escitalopram or fluoxetine or haloperidol or olanzapine or phenothiazine or quetiapine or risperidone or trazodone" and "lipid emulsion or Intralipid...

Intralipids have been suggested to suppress uterine natural killer cell activity, which could potentially improve implantation rates in women with recurrent loss. We report a case of a 41-year-old African woman with recurrent pregnancy loss who had elevated uterine killer cell activity and for whom intralipid infusion was used to achieve pregnancy. We recommend routine uterine natural killer cell testing for women with recurrent pregnancy loss and further research on newer intravenous lipid emulsions in fertility medicine...

Water pollution caused by hazardous substances, particularly heavy metal (HM) ions, poses a threat to human health and the environment. Traditional methods for measuring HM in water are expensive and time-consuming and require extensive sample preparation. Therefore, developing robust, simple, and sensitive techniques for the detection and classification of HM is needed. We propose an optical approach that exploits the full scattering profile, meaning the angular intensity distribution, and utilizes the iso-pathlength (IPL) point...

An 11-month-old female infant diagnosed with classic subtype IB maple syrup urine disease underwent living donor liver transplantation. Blood samples for plasma amino acid analysis were collected during the three phases of the operation. Despite the perioperative prophylactic administration of 12.5% hypertonic dextrose solution with insulin and a 20% intralipid emulsion, the blood levels of the branched-chain amino acids increased dramatically during surgery, consistent with an acute intraoperative metabolic decompensation...

BACKGROUND: Using soybean oil-based lipid emulsions (Intralipid), which contain higher amounts of omega-6 fatty acids and phytosterols in parenteral nutrition, is a risk factor for cholestasis (PNAC). An alternative form of a mixed lipid emulsion (SMOFlipid) has been developed to reduce the risk of PNAC, but significant benefits over Intralipid in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants have yet to be demonstrated. The aim of this study was to compare the differences in PNAC incidence in VLBW receiving SMOFlipid vs...

INTRODUCTION: Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) can achieve real-time 2D perfusion maps non-invasively. However, LSCI is still difficult to use in general clinical applications because of movement sensitivity and limitations in blood flow analysis. To overcome this, fluorescence imaging (FI) is combined with LSCI using a light source with a wavelength of 785 nm in near-infrared (NIR) region and validates to visualize real-time blood perfusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The system was performed using Intralipid and indocyanine green (ICG) in a flow phantom that has three tubes and controlled the flow rate in 0-150 μl/min range...

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in the absorption of lipophilic drugs, making it an important route for drug delivery. In this study, an in vitro model using Intralipid® was developed to investigate the lymphatic uptake of drugs. The model was validated using cannabidiol, halofantrine, quercetin, and rifampicin. Remarkably, the uptake of these drugs closely mirrored what would transpire in vivo. Furthermore, adding peanut oil to the model system significantly increased the lymphatic uptake of rifampicin, consistent with meals containing fat stimulating lymphatic drug uptake...
