Acid-base titration is a quantitative analysis that enables knowing the quantity of acidic or basic groups present in a solution sample. It consists in the addition of base or acid to the solution sample while monitoring the pH to reach a neutral pH. The titration can be automated and here we present a low cost Arduino based Open Source Pump (OSPump) modified to act as an automated titrator with an obsolete but reliable Metrohm 713 pH meter. Our device is 50 times less expensive than second hand units from the pH meter manufacturer and inherently open to customization...

Mixed-acidic cation-exchange (MCX) columns with both strongly (SCX) and weakly (WCX) acidic functional groups were developed for the separation of standard amino acids. The resins were prepared by carboxylation of highly crosslinked monodisperse poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) copolymer particles with performic acid and subsequent sulfonation with sulfuric acid. The degree of functionalization was varied independently for each processing step and controlled by measuring pH dependent retention of the obtained resins...

Chromium (Cr) (VI) is a toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic water pollutant. The standard ion chromatography (IC) method for quantification of Cr (VI) in water samples is Environmental Protection Agency Method 218.7, which requires postcolumn derivatization with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide and UV-Vis spectroscopy detection. Method 218.7 is Cr (VI) specific; thus, it does not allow detection of co-occurring natural and anthropogenic anions in environmental media. In this study, we developed an isocratic IC method with suppressed conductivity detection, a Metrohm Metrosep A Supp 7 column, and sodium carbonate/acetonitrile as mobile phase for simultaneous quantification of Cr (VI), <mml:math xmlns:mml="https://www...

This paper describes a research collaboration with Studio 1 Labs to provide the characterization for a novel smart baby monitoring device which includes conductive fabrics. The electrical characterization of the conductive fabrics is important for designing a bedsheet that can adequately be sensitive to physiological movement. Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been performed using the Metrohm Autolab potentiostat on a two-fabric interface. For an increase in applied weight, there was an overall decrease in impedance shown both in its real and imaginary components...

During various processes in the body, nitrates are converted into nitrites, which causes various diseases, such as blue baby syndrome and cancer. This study aimed to determine the concentration of nitrates in several vegetable farms in Sanandaj city and to evaluate their health-related risks. PM2.5 samples were collected in a northern suburb of Nanjing during the winter of 2015. Water soluble ions and carbonaceous substances under different air quality levels were analyzed by an 850 professional IC-type ion chromatograph produced by Metrohm and a Model 2001A carbon analyzer. The results show that the average mass concentration of PM2.5 , SO4 2- , NO3 - , and NH4 + during heavy pollution days was 4.0, 6.4, 3.1, and 3.9 times higher than on clear days, respectively. Three main secondary ions were all in the form of (NH4 )2 SO4 and NH4 NO3 on all days...

A variety of methods, including the Ion Selective Electrode (ISE), have been used for estimation of fluoride levels in drinking water. But as these methods suffer many drawbacks, the newer method of IC has replaced many of these methods. The study aimed at (1) validating IC for estimation of fluoride levels in drinking water and (2) to assess drinking water fluoride levels of villages in and around Vellore district using IC. Forty nine paired drinking water samples were measured using ISE and IC method (Metrohm)...

Bacterial contamination of blood components is the major infectious risk in transfusion medicine. Since platelets should be stored at room temperature that makes them an excellent growth medium for bacteria; it is mentioned as a major problem in transfusion medicine. Transfusion risk of a bacterial contaminated platelet concentrate is higher than viral pathogen such as HIV, HBV, HCV and HTLV. The objective of this study was to evaluation of the sensitivity and specificity of use of glucose and pH for bacterial screening of platelet concentrates compared to the Bact/Alert...
