BACKGROUND: One thousand sixty-one individuals were sampled from the cities of Anbar, Baghdad, Basra, Diyala, Najaf, and Wasit in Iraq and typed for 15 forensic STRs to explore the genetic structure of Iraq and develop a forensic DNA database. The total number of alleles that were identified was 203. RESULT: Analyses of molecular variance (AMOVA) were then conducted Baghdad provides a good representation of the rest of the country, while Anbar is the most genetically distinct...

Malignant struma ovarii (MSO) is a rare and aggressive ovarian tumor that mostly affects adults but can occur in adolescents. Prompt recognition, accurate diagnosis, and multidisciplinary management are essential for favorable outcomes. Herein, we report the youngest case of an 11-year-old girl with a large MSO. First, conventional imaging revealed a large left ovarian mass, leading to a left oophorectomy. Subsequently, histopathological examination confirmed papillary thyroid carcinoma within MSO. Thyroid and fertility-preserving surgery were chosen after multidisciplinary consultation...

Objective To assess the awareness of hernia and its risk factors among adults in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Our hypothesis was that the studied population was in need of education regarding this matter.  Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in the western region of Saudi Arabia from November to December 2022, using a Google form. The generated questionnaire consisting of two parts was distributed electronically through social media platforms. The targeted population included adults from the western region of Saudi Arabia...

This retrospective study examines the diagnostic accuracy of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18 F-FDG PET/CT) and neck magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting nodal metastasis for patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and assesses the predictive values of metabolic and structural features derived from 18 F-FDG PET/CT. By involving 66 patients from 2014 to 2021, the sensitivity and specificity of both modalities were calculated. 18 F-FDG PET/CT outperforms neck MRI for nodal disease detection, with 89% sensitivity, 65% specificity, and 77% accuracy for nodal metastasis ( p = 0...

In this work, we focused on the 3rd goal of the sustainable development plan: achieving good health and supporting well-being. Two redox-active hydrazo ligands namely, phenylcarbonohydrazonoyldicyanide (PCHD) and pyridin-4-ylcarbonohydrazonoyl-dicyanide (PyCHD), and their copper(I) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The analytical data indicates the formation of copper(I) complexes despite starting with copper(II) perchlorate salt. The 1 H-NMR and UV-visible spectral studies in DMSO revealed that PyCHD mainly exists in its azo-form, while PCHD exists in azo ↔ hydrazo equilibrium form, and confirmed the copper(I) oxidation state...

(1) Background: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a crucial ligament in the knee joint. This study compares the differences in knee range of motion (ROM), knee proprioception error, balance, function, and quality of life (QOL) among participants with and without meniscus repair or partial meniscectomy nine months post ACL reconstruction. (2) Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 57 male participants were selected through convenience sampling from a tertiary care hospital. Knee flexion and extension ROM were assessed using a digital goniometer; a digital inclinometer was used to assess knee proprioception error; the Y balance test was used to evaluate balance; the lower extremity functional scale (LEFS) was used to assess activity; and QOL was assessed using the ACLQOL questionnaire...

Interleukin-40 (IL-40) is a novel cytokine encoded by the chromosome 17 open reading frame 99 (C17orf99) gene. Recent studies have shown that IL-40 levels are significantly up-regulated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the association of genetic variants of the C17orf99 gene with the risk of RA has not been investigated. In this case-control study, two intergenic variants, rs2004339 A/G and rs2310998 G/A, were genotyped for the first time in 120 Iraqi women with RA (30 newly diagnosed [ND] and 90 medicated [MD; treated with the tumor necrosis inhibitor etanercept plus methotrexate]) and 110 control women using TaqMan 5'-allele discrimination method...

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are recognized for their remarkable ability to differentiate into multiple cell types. They are also known to possess properties that can fight cancer, leading to attempts to modify MSCs for use in anticancer treatments. However, MSCs have also been found to participate in pathways that promote tumor growth. Many studies have been conducted to explore the potential of MSCs for clinical applications, but the results have been inconclusive, possibly due to the diverse nature of MSC populations...

Laryngeal carcinoma is the most common head and neck cancer. The vast majority of laryngeal carcinomas are of squamous-cell histologic type. Metastasis of laryngeal cancer typically occurs within the cervical lymph nodes and seldom in other regions. Although a small percentage of patients experience distant metastases, bone marrow metastasis from laryngeal cancer is among the least common metastatic sites. Previous literature has suggested that bone marrow carcinomatosis is aggressive and has a poor outcome, particularly in patients with supraglottic tumors...

BACKGROUND: Hepatic hemangioma represents the most frequent benign tumor originating from the liver. When the tumor exceeds 10 cm, and in some studies 4 or 5 cm, it is considered giant, which accounts for 10% of all hemangiomas arising from the liver. Histologically, Sclerosing hepatic hemangioma, in particular, is an exceedingly rare subtype of hemangioma. Clinically Bornman-Terblanche-Blumgart syndrome is a very rare complication of hepatic hemangioma. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this case presentation was to contribute to the literature by documenting a case of giant sclerosing hemangioma diagnosed in a 36-year-old female presenting with Bornman-Terblanche-Blumgart syndrome, along with a brief review of the literature...

Patients with Crohn's disease (CD) are considered more prone to spontaneous intestinal perforation rather than normal population However, spontaneous intestinal perforation remains rare. DTC accounts for the majority of endocrine tumors. While the incidence of thyroid cancer has been increasing globally over the past few decades, papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) generally shows an excellent prognosis, except in cases with aggressive clinicopathological features.
