Benign acute childhood myositis (BACM) is a self-limited childhood illness, and viral infections mainly cause it. Clinical and laboratory alterations usually normalize rapidly; generally, the only medical intervention required is supportive (hydration and analgesic medication). The low awareness about BACM often led to delayed diagnosis and unneeded ancillary investigations. This study aims to better characterize the clinical and laboratory features of BACM to improve the diagnostic process and inpatient and outpatient management...

BACKGROUND: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD) is a newly defined autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating central nervous system (CNS) disease characterized by antibodies against MOG. Leptomeningeal enhancement (LME) on contrast-enhanced fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (CE-FLAIR) images has been reported in patients with other diseases and interpreted as a biomarker of inflammation. This study retrospectively analyzed the prevalence and distribution of LME on CE-FLAIR images in children with MOG antibody-associated encephalitis (MOG-E)...

A previously healthy child, presented with severe abdominal and scrotal pain with scrotal swelling for five days. There was associated fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. There was history of COVID-19 infection in the previous month. The patient was febrile (39°C), and in pain. His other vitals were unremarkable. Testicular torsion and appendicitis were ruled out by ultrasound. Abdominal CT scan showed signs indicating terminal ileitis. His MIS-C panel revealed elevated inflammatory markers and cardiac enzymes and positive SARS-CoV-2 IgG levels...

Our research aims to investigate the serum expression of a novel immune regulator PK2 in children with Kawasaki disease and to evaluate the ability of PK2 to predict Kawasaki disease. A total of 70 children with Kawasaki disease in the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University who were first diagnosed, 20 children with common fever admitted to hospital due to bacterial infection during the same period, and 31 children underwent physical examination were included in this study...

Background and Objecitves: Appendicitis is one of the most frequent surgical emergencies in pediatric surgery. Complicated appendicitis can evolve with appendicular peritonitis characterized by the diffusion of the pathological process to the peritoneal cavity, thus producing generalized or localized inflammation of the peritoneum. The capacity to anticipate the possibility of perforation in acute appendicitis can direct prompt management and lower morbidity. There is no specific symptom that could be used to anticipate complicated appendicitis, and diagnostic clues include a longer period of symptoms, diffuse peritoneal signs, high fever, elevated leukocytosis and CRP, hyponatremia, and high ESR...

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is associated with a postinfectious hyperinflammatory disorder, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), that shares characteristics with still's disease, known as systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) in children younger than 16, and adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) in children 16 and older. Both MIS-C and SJIA/AOSD can be complicated by macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), a potentially fatal condition of cytokine storm. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 16 year-old male who developed quotidian fever, headache, conjunctival injection, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and symmetrical polyarticular arthralgia/arthritis 4 weeks after exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and 2 weeks after his first vaccination against COVID-19...

We performed an observational cohort study to assess associations between genetic factors of dengue fever (DF) severity in children in the Dominican Republic. A total of 488 participants had serologically confirmed DF. We replicated the association between the IFIH1 gene (rs1990760) and severe DF (n = 80/488, p = 0.006) and identified novel associations needing further investigation.

Sepsis is among the leading causes of critical illness worldwide. It includes physiologic, pathologic, and biochemical abnormalities, induced by infection. Novel methods for recognizing a dysregulated inflammatory response and predicting associated mortality must be developed. Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome is a rare and novel clinical presentation described during the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. The condition is usually presenting as a sepsis-like syndrome leading to secondary multi-organ dysfunction post-COVID-19 infection. Although the syndrome has been mainly described in children, rare adults' form has been similarly described. We are describing a 37-year-old female patient presented with fever and neck pain after 1 month of a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection course and 10 days post her second COVID-19 vaccine...

Introduction: While the clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infection seems to be milder or asymptomatic within the pediatric population, growing attention has been laid to the rare complication elicited by virus, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children temporarily associated with COVID-19 (MIS-C). Published definition and criteria of MIS-C include persistent fever, multisystem involvement, and elevated markers of inflammation, without obvious microbial inflammation or other plausible diagnosis. However, the aim of this case report is to emphasize the diversity of symptoms of MIS-C, beyond the defined criteria...

The multisystem inflammatory syndrome in adults (MIS-A) is a novel syndrome observed during COVID-19 outbreaks. This hyper-inflammatory syndrome is seen predominantly in children and adolescents. De-identified clinical data were retrospectively collected to summarize the clinical progression and treatment during hospitalization and the six-month follow-up...
