Machine learning (ML) methods are proliferating in scientific research. However, the adoption of these methods has been accompanied by failures of validity, reproducibility, and generalizability. These failures can hinder scientific progress, lead to false consensus around invalid claims, and undermine the credibility of ML-based science. ML methods are often applied and fail in similar ways across disciplines. Motivated by this observation, our goal is to provide clear recommendations for conducting and reporting ML-based science...

Hydrodynamic dimension (HD) is the primary indicator of the size of bioconjugated particles and biomolecules. It is an important parameter in the study of solid-liquid two-phase dynamics. HD dynamic monitoring is crucial for precise and customized medical research as it enables the investigation of the continuous changes in the physicochemical characteristics of biomolecules in response to external stimuli. However, current HD measurements based on Brownian motion, such as dynamic light scattering (DLS), are inadequate for meeting the polydisperse sample demands of dynamic monitoring...

BACKGROUND: Implementation science helps generate approaches to expedite the uptake of evidence in practice. Mixed methods are commonly used in implementation research because they allow researchers to integrate distinct qualitative and quantitative methods and data sets to unravel the implementation process and context and design contextual tools for optimizing the implementation. To date, there has been limited discussion on how to ensure rigor in mixed methods implementation research...

Police are often the first to encounter individuals when they are experiencing a mental health crisis. Other professionals with different skill sets, however, may be needed to optimize crisis response. Increasingly, police and mental health agencies are creating co-responder teams (CRTs) in which police and mental health professionals co-respond to crisis calls. While past evaluations of CRTs have shown promising results (e.g. hospital diversions; cost-effectiveness), most studies occurred in larger urban contexts...

Cognitive diagnosis is a crucial element of intelligent education that aims to assess the proficiency of specific skills or traits in students at a refined level and provide insights into their strengths and weaknesses for personalized learning. Researchers have developed numerous cognitive diagnostic models. However, previous studies indicate that diagnostic accuracy can be significantly influenced by the appropriateness of the model and the sample size. Thus, designing a general model that can adapt to different assumptions and sample sizes remains a considerable challenge...

The power transformer is the core equipment of the power system, a sudden failure of which will seriously endanger the safety of the power system. In recent years, artificial intelligence techniques have been applied to the dissolved gas analysis evaluation of power transformers to improve the accuracy and efficiency of power transformer fault diagnosis. However, most of the artificial intelligence techniques are data-driven algorithms whose performance decreases when the data are limited or significantly imbalanced...

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) pose a significant global health concern and are the most common cause of death and disability, necessitating preventive interventions targeting modifiable risk factors. Recently, mobile-health technology has been developed to improve the delivery of cardiovascular prevention by risk factor modification. The "Green Heart" mobile application (app) was designed to aid in risk factor control among coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. METHODS: This parallel-group, single-blinded randomized controlled trial enrolled 1590 CAD patients, including 668 current smokers, randomly assigned to control (paper-based education) and intervention (application-based) groups...

We are engaged in the development and clinical application of a neural magnetic field measurement system that utilizes biomagnetic measurements to observe the activity of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Unlike conventional surface potential measurements, biomagnetic measurements are not affected by the conductivity distribution within the body, making them less influenced by the anatomical structure of body tissues. Consequently, functional testing using biomagnetic measurements can achieve higher spatial resolution compared to surface potential measurements...

This paper provides the first evidence that children from families who benefit from PWPs show increased foundational cognitive skills. The results, based on unique tablet-based data collected as part of a long-standing longitudinal survey, show positive associations between participation in the Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP) in Ethiopia during childhood with long-term memory and implicit learning, and suggestive evidence for working memory...

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are important cell-to-cell communication mediators. This paper focuses on the regulatory role of tumor-derived EVs on macrophages. It aims to investigate the causes of tumor progression and therapeutic directions. Tumor-derived EVs can cause macrophages to shift to M1 or M2 phenotypes. This indicates they can alter the M1/M2 cell ratio and have pro-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. This paper discusses several key points: first, the factors that stimulate macrophage polarization and the cytokines released as a result; second, an overview of EVs and the methods used to isolate them; third, how EVs from various cancer cell sources, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung carcinoma, breast carcinoma, and glioblastoma cell sources carcinoma, promote tumor development by inducing M2 polarization in macrophages; and fourth, how EVs from breast carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, lungs carcinoma, and glioblastoma cell sources carcinoma also contribute to tumor development by promoting M2 polarization in macrophages...

Oral lichen planus is a common, chronic mucocutaneous condition of uncertain origin. Early treatment of OLP can dramatically reduce the risk of further development, which in turn reduces the risk of developing cancer. Numerous methods can be used to treat OLP. Since the significance of ozone in treating this disease is still uncertain. This systematic review was conducted based on english databases, including PUBMED, SCOPUS, Embase, Ovid, and Journal of Web up to July 2022. This paper introduces CYCLOPS, an acquisition system developed to capture images and inertial measurement data of moving cyclists from a vehicle. The development of CYCLOPS addresses the need to acquire useful data for training machine learning models capable of predicting the motion intentions of cyclists on urban roads. Considering its application, it is a completely original development. The system consists of two devices. The first device is installed on the bicycle and is based on an electronic acquisition board comprising an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a microcontroller, and a transceiver for sending the cyclist's acceleration and orientation data to a vehicle...

In the search for pharmaceutically active compounds from natural products, it is crucial and challenging to develop separation methods that target not only structurally similar compounds but also a class of compounds with desired pharmaceutical functions. To achieve both structure-oriented and function-oriented selectivity, the choice of functional monomers with broad interactions or even biomimetic roles towards targeted compounds is essential. In this work, an imidazole (IM)-functionalized paper membrane was synthesized to realize selectivity...

BACKGROUND: The widespread absence of papers originating in low and middle income economies (LAMIE) across various scholarly disciplines has been widely acknowledged. This research endeavored to investigate the composition of editorial staff members (ESM) within major spinal journals and scrutinize the degree of international diversity represented among the ESM...

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have shown remarkable success in image classification tasks, but optimizing their hyperparameters can be challenging due to their complex structure. This paper develops the Adaptive Habitat Biogeography-Based Optimizer (AHBBO) for tuning the hyperparameters of DCNNs in image classification tasks. In complicated optimization problems, the BBO suffers from premature convergence and insufficient exploration. In this regard, an adaptable habitat is presented as a solution to these problems; it would permit variable habitat sizes and regulated mutation...

We analyze balanced panel data using Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) and Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE). Our findings reveal several vital insights: (1) GFDI helps improve EQ. (2) Environmental costs associated with economic growth are negative. (3) Trade openness positively influences EQ. (4) EQ is enhanced by institutional quality, energy use, and population expansion in the chosen countries...
