INTRODUCTION: In line with Canadian provincial directives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, certain elective urological surgical cases that are normally performed as inpatient procedures, were performed as same-day discharge procedures to reduce hospitalization and the usage of scarce healthcare resources. Since the pandemic, we began performing laser enucleation of the prostate (LEP), robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) as outpatient surgeries...

INTRODUCTION: There is growing use of online resources in the postgraduate medical education application process to provide applicants program-specific details, thus allowing for informed decision-making. Given the variability and non-standardized electronic training descriptions and objectives, our goal was to assess the availability of program information through program websites for both residency and fellowship urology programs across Canada. METHODS: Using the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) and the Canadian Urological Association (CUA) websites, we compiled a list of all Canadian urology residency and fellowship programs...

INTRODUCTION: The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) in older adults increasingly is being discussed in the literature on Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome (PACS). Remote digital Assessments for Preclinical AD (RAPAs) are becoming more important in screening for early AD, and should always be available for PACS patients, especially for patients at risk of AD. This systematic review examines the potential for using RAPA to identify impairments in PACS patients, scrutinizes the supporting evidence, and describes the recommendations of experts regarding their use...

The importance of seeing race as a socially constructed idea continues to produce unfair differences between humans and establishes power relations that lead to injustice and exposure to death. Since the racial justice movement in early 2020, there has been a heightened awareness of, and increased interest in, addressing historic racial disparities across Schools of Public Health (SPH) in Canada. Steps have been taken to recognize systemic racism and increase diversity through structural reforms to advance equity and inclusion; however, addressing racism demands collectively uprooting racist institutional designs still inherent in learning, teaching, research, service, and community engagement...

Past research has emphasized the need to identify profiles of men who perpetrate intimate partner violence (IPV) as a way to better understand this heterogeneous population and guide the development of tailored services. However, empirical validation for such profiles remains limited, since it still focuses on specific populations or fails to consider IPV as reported by men seeking treatment for IPV. We know little about the profiles of men who seek services for their use of IPV (with or without a justice referral)...

Medical internal radiation dosimetry constitutes a fundamental aspect of diagnosis, treatment, optimization, and safety in nuclear medicine. The MIRD committee of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imaging developed a new computational tool to support organ-level and suborgan tissue dosimetry (MIRDcalc, version 1). Based on a standard Excel spreadsheet platform, MIRDcalc provides enhanced capabilities to facilitate radiopharmaceutical internal dosimetry. This new computational tool implements the well-established MIRD schema for internal dosimetry...

Radiopharmaceutical dosimetry is usually estimated via organ-level MIRD schema-style formalisms, which form the computational basis for commonly used clinical and research dosimetry software. Recently, MIRDcalc internal dosimetry software was developed to provide a freely available organ-level dosimetry solution that incorporates up-to-date models of human anatomy, addresses uncertainty in radiopharmaceutical biokinetics and patient organ masses, and offers a 1-screen user interface as well as quality assurance tools...

The large amounts of opioids and the emergence of increasingly potent illicitly manufactured synthetic opioids circulating in the unregulated drug supply in North America and Europe are fueling not only the ongoing public health crisis of overdose deaths but also raise the risk of another type of disaster: deliberate opioid release with the intention to cause mass harm. Synthetic opioids are highly potent, rapidly acting, can cause fatal ventilatory depression, are widely available, and have the potential to be disseminated for mass exposure, for example, if effectively formulated, via inhalation or ingestion...

Natalizumab is a well-established disease-modifying therapy used in active multiple sclerosis (MS). The most serious adverse event is progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. For safety reasons, hospital implementation is mandatory. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has deeply affected hospital practices leading French authorities to temporarily authorize to administer the treatment at home. The safety of natalizumab home administration should be assessed to allow ongoing home infusion. The aim of the study is to describe the procedure and assess the safety in a home infusion natalizumab model...

OBJECTIVES: As adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) progress to adulthood, they assume responsibility for diabetes self-management while dealing with competing life demands, decreasing parental support, and the transfer to adult care. Lower perceived quality of life (QOL) may hamper diabetes management, which is associated with suboptimal glycemic levels. Our objective was to determine associations of diabetes- and health-related QOL with glycemic management (glycated hemoglobin [A1C]) in adolescents with T1D before their transfer to adult care...

The use of assisted-reproduction technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) is increasing, particularly in dairy cattle. The question of consequences in later life has not yet been directly addressed by studies on large animal populations. Studies on rodents and early data from humans and cattle suggest that in vitro manipulation of gametes and embryos could result in long-term alteration of metabolism, growth, and fertility. Our goal was to better describe these presumed consequences in the population of dairy cows produced by IVF in Québec (Canada) and to compare them to animals conceived by artificial insemination (AI) or multiple ovulation embryo transfer (MOET)...

Crop pathogenic fungi may originate from reservoir pools including wild vegetation surrounding fields, and it is thus important to characterize any potential source of pathogens. We therefore investigated natural vegetation's potential for hosting a widespread pathogenic group, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex. We stratified sampling in different forest environments and natural vegetation strata to determine whether the fungi were found preferentially in specific niches and areas. We found that the fungi complex was fairly broadly distributed in the wild flora, with high prevalence in every study environment and stratum...

This study examined direct and indirect links among attachment insecurities (anxiety, avoidance) and sexual satisfaction through sexual motives in couples expecting their first child. A sample of 204 first-time pregnant couples completed online questionnaires. Dyadic path analyses revealed that attachment and sexual satisfaction were not directly associated, but rather indirectly associated through three sexual motives: partner approval, self-affirmation, and intimacy. For non-pregnant partners, attachment anxiety was related to higher sexual satisfaction through higher intimacy, whereas attachment avoidance was related to lower sexual satisfaction through lower intimacy...

Immune activating agents represent a valuable class of therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. An area of active research is expanding the types of these therapeutics that are available to patients via targeting new biological mechanisms. Hematopoietic progenitor kinase 1 (HPK1) is a negative regulator of immune signaling and a target of high interest for the treatment of cancer. Herein, we present the discovery and optimization of novel amino-6-aryl pyrrolopyrimidine inhibitors of HPK1 starting from hits identified via virtual screening...

Early romantic relationships are salient to the development of healthy future relationships. Yet, little is known about the evolution of romantic relationships of emerging adults since most of the research has been conducted on married or well-established couples. The current study aims to examine how relationship satisfaction and negative communication evolve and are interrelated during emerging adulthood. Using age as a time metric, we conducted group-based dual trajectory modeling analyses on 1566 unmarried Canadian individuals (from 17 to 24 years old) in a relationship, who could either stay with the same partner or change partner over time...
