INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) share a similar transmission route, increasing coinfection odds, which worsens clinical outcomes.  Objectives: Therefore it is pivotal to study coinfected patients undergoing HCV treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) to understand their characteristics, risk of HBV reactivation, and effectiveness of therapy.  Patients and methods: The present research included the complex analysis of 1118 patients with chronic HCV infection, divided into three subgroups based on HBV status...

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of different types of inhalant allergens on the lung functions of adult patients with bronchial asthma. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a total of 47 adults diagnosed with bronchial asthma at the Respiratory Outpatient Department of Tianjin First Central Hospital. Patients were divided into non-sensitized and sensitized groups based on the number of positive allergens detected and classified into four groups (the dust mite mixed group, animal dander mixed group, pollen-mixed group, and mold mixed group) based on the type of positive allergen detected...

OBJECTIVE: The novel objective of our study was to analyze the number of workplace aggressions per hospital worker. Other objectives of the study were to analyze the management knowledge and interest in receiving training on aggressions by hospital workers. METHODS: An anonymous survey was handed out among all professionals in a university hospital...

Mating and receipt of male Sex Peptide hormone cause increased egg laying, increased midgut size and decreased life span in female Drosophila. Feeding mated females with the synthetic steroid mifepristone decreases egg production, reduces midgut size, and increases life span. Here, several gene mutations were assayed to investigate possible mechanisms for mifepristone action. Drosophila Dhr96 is a hormone receptor, and a key positive regulator of midgut lipid uptake and metabolism. Dhr96[1] null mutation increased female life span, and reduced the effects of mifepristone on life span, suggesting that Dhr96[1] mutation and mifepristone may act in part through the same mechanism...

BACKGROUND: We retrospectively analyzed serum level of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) as a pulmonary inflammatory biomarker in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in association with disease severity and outcome. METHODS: Ninety-nine (40 critically ill, 40 severe and 19 mild) COVID-19 patients and as controls 25 age- and sex-matched non-COVID-19 bacterial sepsis subjects were included. Serum HE4 was measured by an immunoassay (Architect® i1000SR, Abbott) in the baseline samples of all study participants obtained at intensive care unit (ICU) admission or during outpatient clinic visit and follow-up sera were available in case of 30 COVID-19 subjects with life-threating conditions...

The publication of the decree on the care of people with neurocognitive disorders brought to the fore the Reisberg's Global Deterioration Scale, a scale that only few clinicians use in memory centers or in geriatric. This scale has a number of limitations, not least of which is that it is obsolete, since it does not take into account disease advances in scientific knowledge with biomarkers. Consequently, the stages evoked no longer correspond to current descriptions. Moreover, it only concerns Alzheimer's disease, whereas in our practice we encounter other neurodegenerative pathologies...

OBJECTIVE: Physical activity in a social setting is said to be associated with well-being because it provides opportunities for participants to form social relationships. However, there are inconsistent findings regarding the well-being benefits of participating in physical activity with others. To address this inconclusive evidence, we draw on the social identity approach to health and well-being to examine whether (a) the frequency of physical activity participation in a social setting and (b) the degree of social identification associated with it, have different relationships with participants' well-being...

FUS and TDP-43, two RNA-binding proteins from the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein family, have gained significant attention in the field of neurodegenerative diseases due to their association with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal degeneration (FTD). They possess folded domains for binding ATP and various nucleic acids including DNA and RNA, as well as substantial intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) including prion-like domains (PLDs) and RG-/RGG-rich regions. They play vital roles in various cellular processes, including transcription, splicing, microRNA maturation, RNA stability and transport and DNA repair...

Water insoluble α -glucans that were enzymatically synthesized using glucansucrase that was cloned from Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B-1118 were previously shown to form nanoparticles via high pressure homogenization. These α -glucan nanoparticles were previously shown capable of encapsulating a small hydrophobic molecule. This work demonstrates that the same α -glucan can be formed into nanoparticles that encapsulate feruloylated soy glycerides from modified soybean oil, a product of interest to the cosmetic and skin care industries because of the UV absorbance and antioxidant properties of the feruloyl moiety...

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is accompanied by various types of remodeling, including volumetric enlargement and histological degeneration. Electrical remodeling reportedly reflects histological degeneration. PURPOSE: To clarify the differences in determinants and clinical impacts among types of remodeling. METHODS: This observational study included 1118 consecutive patients undergoing initial ablation for AF. Patients were divided into four groups: minimal remodeling (left atrial volume index [LAVI] < mean value and no low-voltage area [LVA], n = 477); volumetric remodeling (LAVI ≥ mean value and no LVA, n = 361); electrical remodeling (LAVI < mean value and LVA presence, n = 96); and combined remodeling (LAVI ≥ mean value and LVA presence, n = 184)...

In North America, surplus dairy calves are sold soon after birth and often marketed through a third party (e.g., live auction, livestock dealer) before entering veal or dairy beef production. Previous work has demonstrated that a percentage of calves have failed transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) and clinical signs of disease on arrival at calf-raising facilities, but little is known regarding calf condition during marketing. The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to (1) estimate the prevalence of FTPI and poor health outcomes in surplus calves on arrival at livestock dealers, and (2) investigate the association between calf-level variables (body weight, sex, source) and health outcomes...
