The effect of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) plasmid treatment on sow reproductive performance was examined. Forty pregnant sows (three-way crossbreed: Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) at 85 days of gestation were included in the study and consisted of twenty primiparous and twenty multiparous sows (third parity). Sows were randomly assigned to the control and treatment groups. The treatment group received 5 mg dose of GHRH plasmid injection via electroporation, whereas the control group received a phosphate buffer solution...

Distinct solitary dermal nodules, either covered by an alopecic, or sometimes ulcerated, epidermis, were noticed on the head of a stillborn Holstein calf. The head was submitted for autopsy, and the nodules were found to consist of homogeneous, diffuse pale-yellow, soft-tissue masses with distinct margins that elevated the epidermis above the adjacent skin. Histologically, the dermal nodules were well-delineated on the deep margin approaching the cutaneous muscle and consisted of perivascular neoplastic infiltrates of round cells that in some places coalesced into sheets that extended into the dermis and subcutis...

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality is among the key national and international indicators of health services. The global Sustainable Development Goal target for neonatal mortality is fewer than 12 deaths per 1000 livebirths, by 2030. Neonatal mortality estimates in the 2019 Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey found 25·7 deaths per 1000 livebirths. Subnational surveys specific to Tigray, Ethiopia, reported a neonatal mortality lifetime prevalence of 7·13 deaths. Another government report from the Tigray region estimated a neonatal mortality rate of ten deaths per 1000 livebirths in 2020...

Coronary artery anomalies and their potential sequelae are not well studied in association with stillbirth. Herein, we report the autopsy findings in two term stillborn fetuses with coronary artery anomalies. Both fetuses showed identical findings consisting of an abnormal origin of the left coronary artery from the right sinus of Valsalva and an interarterial course of the left coronary artery. Histologic vascular and myocardial changes were also present. These coronary artery findings are associated with sudden death in adults and neonates, and therefore, their potential to be a cause and/or contributor to fetal death is suspected...

Placental abnormalities more frequently occur during pregnancy of somatic cell clones and may lead to pregnancy loss or dystocia. Adventitious placentation, or diffuse semi-placenta, is determined by the development of areas of accessory placentation between the cotyledons due to the abnormal growth of placentomes. After a full-term pregnancy, a 3-year-old Jersey heifer was referred for dystocia which resulted in the delivery of a dead calf. The cause of dystocia was found to be foetal malposition, while the placenta was physiologically expelled after dystocia resolution...

The aim of this study was to investigate the reference population size required to obtain substantial prediction accuracy within- and across-lines and the effect of using a multi-line reference population for genomic predictions of maternal traits in pigs. The data consisted of two nucleus pig populations, one pure-bred Landrace (L) and one Synthetic (S) Yorkshire/Large White line. All animals were genotyped with up to 30 K animals in each line, and all had records on maternal traits. Prediction accuracy was tested with three different marker data sets: High-density SNP (HD), whole genome sequence (WGS), and markers derived from WGS based on pig combined annotation dependent depletion-score (pCADD)...

We present a rare case of a 25-year-old woman who developed idiopathic portal hypertension and ascites four days after delivering a stillborn child at term. She had no previous liver illness or risk factors for portal vein thrombosis. Investigations revealed a dilated portal vein, esophageal varices, and high serum-albumin gradient ascites, all of which point to a presinusoidal etiology of portal hypertension. There was no indication of cirrhosis, hepatic or portal vein thrombosis, metabolic or autoimmune liver diseases, or persistent infections...

The rate of parental consent for fetal and perinatal autopsy is decreasing, whereas parents are more likely to agree to virtual autopsy by non-invasive imaging methods. Fetal and perinatal virtual autopsy needs high-resolution and good soft-tissue contrast for investigation of the cause of death and underlying trauma or pathology in fetuses and stillborn infants. This is offered by micro-computed tomography (CT), as opposed to the limited resolution provided by clinical CT scanners, and this is one of the most promising tools for non-invasive perinatal postmortem imaging...

BACKGROUND: Congenital myasthenic syndrome is a heterogeneous group of inherited neuromuscular transmission disorders. Variants in RAPSN are a common cause of CMS, accounting for approximately 14%-27% of all CMS cases. Whether preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disease (PGT-M) could be used to prevent the potential birth of CMS-affected children is unclear. METHODS: Application of WES (whole-exome sequencing) for carrier testing and guidance for the PGT-M in the absence of a genetically characterized index patient as well as assisted reproductive technology were employed to prevent the occurrence of birth defects in subsequent pregnancy...
