Recent studies have shown phenotypic and metabolic heterogeneity in related species including Streptococcus oralis , a typical oral commensal bacterium, Streptococcus mutans , a cariogenic bacterium, and Streptococcus gordonii , which functions as an accessory pathogen in periodontopathic biofilm.
