SNAPSHOT USA is a multicontributor, long-term camera trap survey designed to survey mammals across the United States. Participants are recruited through community networks and directly through a website application (https://www.snapshot-usa.org/). The growing Snapshot dataset is useful, for example, for tracking wildlife population responses to land use, land cover, and climate changes across spatial and temporal scales. Here we present the SNAPSHOT USA 2021 dataset, the third national camera trap survey across the US...

BACKGROUND: Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann's procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. METHODS: This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials...

Individuals with aphantasia report having difficulties or an inability to generate visual images of objects or events. So far, there is no evidence showing that this condition also impacts the motor system and the generation of motor simulations. We probed the neurophysiological marker of aphantasia during explicit and implicit forms of motor simulation, i.e. motor imagery and action observation, respectively. We tested a group of individuals without any reported imagery deficits (phantasics) as well as a group of individuals self-reporting the inability to mentally simulate images or movements (aphantasics)...

OBJECTIVES: Among patients with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) admitted to the ICU in high-income countries, regional practice variations for fluid balance (FB) management, timing, and choice of renal replacement therapy (RRT) modality may be significant. DESIGN: Secondary post hoc analysis of the STandard vs. Accelerated initiation of Renal Replacement Therapy in Acute Kidney Injury (STARRT-AKI) trial (ClinicalTrials.gov number NCT02568722). The retrograde approach has allowed a remarkable improvement in the success rate of chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). After collateral channel crossing, the most crucial aspect of retrograde CTO PCI is creating the connection between the antegrade and retrograde system. Currently, the most common technique to achieve this is reverse controlled antegrade and retrograde subintimal tracking. However, this maneuver sometimes fails due to compartment mismatch (intraplaque situation of one wire and extraplaque situation of the other)...

Severely calcified chronic total occlusions (CTO) are particularly challenging to recanalize with a conventional wiring approach. Balloon-assisted subintimal entry (BASE) is an effective option to get access to the extraplaque space and set up for antegrade dissection/re-entry. However, conventional balloons are sometimes unable to dissect the vessel due to severe calcification, and alternative solutions are warranted. In this article, we report, for the first time, on the use of intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) to facilitate BASE in the context of CTO percutaneous coronary intervention...

There is significant variation in wire utilization patterns for chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of polymer-jacketed wires (PJWs) versus non-PJWs in antegrade procedures. We analyzed clinical and angiographic characteristics, and procedural outcomes of 7,575 antegrade CTO PCIs that were performed at 47 centers between 2012 and 2023. Cases in which PJWs were exclusively used were classified in the PJW group, while cases where at least one non-PJW was employed were classified in the non-PJW group...

BACKGROUND: Mucosal Melanomas (MM) are highly aggressive neoplasms arising from mucosal melanocytes. Current treatments offer a limited survival benefit for patients with advanced MM; moreover, the lack of pre-clinical cellular systems has significantly limited the understanding of their immunobiology. METHODS: Five novel cell lines were obtained from patient-derived biopsies of MM arising in the sino-nasal mucosa and designated as SN-MM1-5. The morphology, ultrastructure and melanocytic identity of SN-MM cell lines were validated by transmission electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry...

We demonstrated a first-in-human case of successful antegrade dissection and re-entry using an image-guided re-entry catheter that enables real-time high-resolution visualization with graphical augmentation, and precision steering and advancement of a guidewire. The total time from over-the-wire deployment in the proximity of the distal cap to successful re-entry was <20 minutes. ( Level of Difficulty: Advanced. ).

Action reading is thought to engage motor simulations, such as those involved during the generation of mental motor images. These simulations would yield modulations in activity of motor-related cortical regions and contribute to action language comprehension. To test these ideas, we measured corticospinal excitability during action reading, and reading comprehension ability, in individuals with normal and impaired imagery (i.e., phantasia and aphantasia, respectively). Thirty-four participants (17 phantasic and 17 aphantasic) were asked to read manual action sentences...

BACKGROUND: Most randomized studies testing the effectiveness of IVBT were limited to vessels less than 4 mm diameter. In fact, it is now common to treat vessels larger than 4 mm. Accordingly, the authors instituted a prescription dose increase to 34 Gy at 2 mm from source center for vessels greater than 4.0 mm. The increase in prescription dose to 34 Gy at 2 mm from center is substantial, being 50% higher than the conventional maximum of 23 Gy. The transition period from hospital to home is a vulnerable time for rehospitalization and adverse events for patients. Follow-up clinic visits within 7-14 days of discharge is an effective strategy for reducing hospital readmissions. Neurocritical care patients have a unique set of needs to safely transition to home. We evaluated the feasibility of a Neuroscience Rapid Follow-Up Clinic with nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician associates (PAs) to meet transitional care gaps in neurocritical care patients and prevent rehospitalization...

BACKGROUND: Cardiac reprogramming is a technique to directly convert nonmyocytes into myocardial cells using genes or small molecules. This intervention provides functional benefit to the rodent heart when delivered at the time of myocardial infarction or activated transgenically up to 4 weeks after myocardial infarction. OBJECTIVE: Peripheral artery disease is known to affect males and females in different proportions. Disparate surgical outcomes have been quantified after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, arteriovenous fistula creation, and treatment of critical limb ischemia. The aim of this study is to objectively quantify the sex differences in outcomes in patients undergoing open surgical intervention for aortoiliac occlusive disease. METHODS: Patients were identified in the aortoiliac occlusive disease Vascular Quality Initiative database who underwent aorto-bifemoral bypass or aortic thromboendarterectomy as determined by Current Procedural Terminology codes between 2012 and 2019...

Coronary artery obstruction is a rare but life-threatening complication of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). While urgent percutaneous coronary intervention has been described in cases of acute occlusion, little is known about the interventional management of obstruction once it has occurred in the chronic setting. We describe a case in which electrocautery-assisted re-entry was successfully utilized to manage the right coronary artery and left main chronic total occlusion due to leaflet-induced coronary artery obstruction after TAVR...

Objectives  Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) is an extremely rare and challenging sinonasal malignancy with a poor prognosis. Standard treatment involves complete surgical resection, but the role of adjuvant therapy remains unclear. Crucially, our understanding of its clinical presentation, course, and optimal treatment remains limited, and few advancements in improving its management have been made in the recent past. Methods  We conducted an international multicenter retrospective analysis of 505 SNMM cases from 11 institutions across the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and continental Europe...
