OBJECTIVES: Regenerating the periodontium poses a critical challenge in oral medicine. To repair various periodontal defects, it is necessary to adopt a bio-scaffold that provides both the architecture and bioactive cues for local stem cells to migrate, reside, proliferate, and differentiate. The objective of this study is to combine a cell-specific decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) and a biomimetic electrospinning scaffold to regenerate severely destructed periodontium. METHODS: SEM, water contact angle (WCA), live/dead staining, swelling ratio, tensile test and immune-fluorescent staining were used to define the suitable topography for certain dental stem cells seeding and culturing...

Magnesium silicate hydrate (MSH) cement has the advantages of low energy consumption, minimal environmental pollution, carbon negativity, and reduced alkalinity, but excessive drying shrinkage inhibits its application. This paper analyzed the influence of steel slag (SS) dosage, carbon dioxide partial pressure, and carbonation curing time on the compressive strength, shrinkage rate, and phase composition of MSH cement. Various analysis methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), were used to study the hydration products and microstructure...

In France, the annual volume of dredged sediments is significantly increasing, which has become a real environmental problem. Nevertheless, these sediments can be used beneficially as supplementary cementing material. On the other hand, external sulfate attack is one of the most aggressive causes of deterioration that affects the durability of concrete structures. This study focused on the valorization of river-dredged sediments from Noyelles-Sous-Lens (Hauts-de-France) as a mineral addition in substitution of Portland cement, and it studied their impacts on the mechanical behavior and durability of reinforced mortars...

This paper deals with the characterisation of cementitious materials from selected cultural heritage structures in Slovenia. The mineralogical-petrographic compositions of an aggregate, a type of binder and secondary minerals were studied via electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The porosity and pore network were determined using a mercury porosimeter. The results show that the aggregate of the samples was highly diverse, ranging from limestone, dolomite, quartz, feldspar and mica. The binder of the investigated samples was cementitious; either ordinary Portland cement was used, or ordinary Portland cement blended with ground granulated blast furnace slag was used...

PURPOSE: Dental amalgam contains mercury and is commonly used in dental restorations. The impact of MRI on mercury excretion from dental amalgam is not well understood across clinical field strengths, especially 7T. We investigated the effects of MRI exposure on mercury excretion using fresh, lab-created dental amalgam restorations and in extracted teeth with old, pre-existing restorations. METHODS: Donated, unfilled human teeth (n = 120) were restored with amalgam before being stored in saline, artificial saliva, or a dry box prior to MRI scanning...

Environmental toxicants are thought to play a major role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. In reviewing the literature on heavy metals known to be toxicants, we noted several recent studies on mercury suggesting a possible role in the etiology of some cases of this disease. We therefore undertook a review of this association, focusing especially on peer-reviewed articles to avoid the bias inherent in much of the literature regarding mercury. For most people, our contemporary exposure to mercury comes from dental amalgam tooth restorations and from eating fish contaminated with mercury...

Cavitation damage on a mercury target vessel for a pulsed spallation neutron source is induced by a proton beam injection in mercury. Cavitation damage is one of factors affecting the allowable beam power and the life time of a mercury target vessel. The prediction method of the cavitation damage using Monte Carlo simulations was proposed taking into account the uncertainties of the core position of cavitation bubbles and impact pressure distributions. The distribution of impact pressure attributed to individual cavitation bubble collapsing was assumed to be Gaussian distribution and the probability distribution of the maximum value of impact pressures was assumed to be three kinds of distributions: the delta function and Gaussian and Weibull distributions...

Infrared detection technology plays an important role in remote sensing, imaging, monitoring, and other fields. So far, most infrared photodetectors are based on InGaAs and HgCdTe materials, which are limited by high fabrication costs, complex production processes, and poor compatibility with silicon-based readout integrated circuits. This hinders the wider application of infrared detection technology. Therefore, reducing the cost of high-performance photodetectors is a research focus. Colloidal quantum dot photodetectors have the advantages of solution processing, low cost, and good compatibility with silicon-based substrates...

The maldistribution of family physicians challenges equitable primary care access in Canada. The Theory of Social Attachment suggests that preferential selection and distributed training interventions have potential in influencing physician disposition. However, evaluations of these approaches have focused predominantly on rural underservedness, with little research considering physician disposition in other underserved communities. Accordingly, this study investigated the association between the locations from which medical graduates apply to medical school, their undergraduate preclerkship, clerkship, residency experiences, and practice as indexed across an array of markers of underservedness...

A large volume, scalable, synthesis procedure of HgTe quantum dots (QDs) capped initially with short-chain conductive ligands, ensures ligand exchange-free and simple device fabrication. An effective n- or p-type self-doping of HgTe QDs is achieved by varying the cation-anion ratio, as well as shifting the Fermi level position by introducing single- or double-cyclic thiol ligands, i.e., 2-furanmethanethiol (FMT) or 2,5-dimercapto-3,4-thiadiasole (DMTD) in the synthesis. This allows for the preservation of the intact surface of the HgTe QDs, thus ensuring a one order of magnitude reduced surface trap density compared with HgTe subjected to solid-state ligand exchange...

The strip filling method in underground reservoir needs high strength to achieve the requirements of water storage. In order to address the challenges associated with costly and weak filling materials, this study aimed to develop an economically efficient and high-strength gangue-based geopolymer backfill material (GBGBM). To achieve this, the Taguchi method was employed to design a series of 25 experiments, each consisting of four factors and five levels. This study focused on investigating the effects of different gangue gradation levels, sand ratios, water binder ratios (w/b), and aggregate binder ratios (a/b) on the working characteristics and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the GBGBM...
