An infertile Siamese female cat was subjected for clinical, histological, cytogenetic and molecular studies due to ambiguous external genitalia (vulva, vagina, rudimentary penis and scrotum-like structure) and masculine behaviour. An elevated oestrogen activity and a detectable level of testosterone were found. The cat underwent laparotomy. The gonads and the uterus were removed and subjected for histological studies, which showed ovaries with corpora lutea and a some primordial follicles. Chromosome studies of lymphocyte and fibroblast cultures, with the use of Giemsa staining, G-banding and whole X chromosome painting by fluorescence in situ hybridization, revealed pure X monosomy...

We report the CT, surgical and histopathologic findings of a rare case of Hepatic Angiosarcoma (HAS) diagnosed in a 85-year old women 65 years afterThorotrast (Th232) exposure for angiography. At the early arterial phase of dynamic MDCT, peripheral curvilinear and central nodular puddling of contrast produced in the 8 cm tumor. Then progressive contrast filling of the tumor was observed on the delayed scans. Associated pathognomonic signs related to previous Th232 exposure were also found comprising diffuse intrahepatic reticular bands of calcifications, numerous calcified epigastric lymph nodes and a calcified shrunken spleen...

INTRODUCTION: An internal abdominal herniation is the protrusion of a viscus through a normal or abnormal mesenteric or peritoneal aperture. It is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction with a reported incidence of 0.2-0.9%. It can either be acquired through a trauma or surgical procedure or can be related to congenital peritoneal defects. Herniation through transverse mesocolon is very rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A case of acute intestinal obstruction due to internal herniation through a congenital rent in transverse mesocolon with rotation of gut approximately 180° around axis of the band...

BACKGROUND: The pneumatosis intestinalis is an entity with multiple aetiologies and may be associated with a fatal outcome when present on plain radiographs. When associated with the presence of portomesenteric venous gas (PMVG) it is typically the result of bowel ischaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS: We are presenting a case of a 43 year old male who presented with a two days history of haematemesis, generalised abdominal pain and distension. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a gross amount of air within the portal venous system and small bowel dilatation to the level of distal ileum was also seen with associated pneumatosis intestinalis...

BACKGROUND: Improvements in health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) occur after bariatric surgery. However, sustainability of these changes over time remains debated. METHODS: Data collected in a prospective 3-year multicenter Italian study on changes of HR-QoL after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding were used. HR-QoL has investigated with the SF-36 questionnaire. Hunger, satiety, and the self-perceived effects of LAGB were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 230 patients (53 male and 177 female) were analyzed...

AIM: To propose a less invasive surgical treatment for schistosomal portal hypertension. METHODS: Ten consecutive patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and portal hypertension with a history of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage from esophageal varices rupture were evaluated in this study. Patients were subjected to a small supraumbilical laparotomy with the ligature of the splenic artery and left gastric vein. During the procedure, direct portal vein pressure before and after the ligatures was measured...

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is an increasingly common therapeutic option in the management of obesity and certain obesity-related comorbid conditions. As it gains popularity for its advantages of being minimally invasive and reversible, clinicians should be aware of growing evidence of esophageal and pulmonary complications, which may be irreversible and associated with long-term morbidity. We report a case of esophageal and pulmonary complications in a patient with successful weight loss after lap-band surgery necessitating its removal...

BACKGROUND: Obesity is often associated with diminished health-related quality of life (HRQOL), but significant gains in HRQOL have been observed after bariatric surgery. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding has been established as a safe, effective treatment to reduce weight in patients with obesity. This report summarizes interim 3-year changes in HRQOL and body weight, as well as safety postimplantation of the LAP-BAND AP (LBAP) system. METHODS: The LAP-BAND AP EXperience (APEX) trial, an ongoing, prospective, 5-year, open-label study, assessed changes in HRQOL (Obesity and Weight-Loss Quality of Life [OWLQOL] questionnaire) and body weight, and safety after placement of LBAP...

We present a case of acute gastric band slippage with gastric necrosis and massive haemoperitoneum necessitating an emergency surgery. The patient presented with an 8h history of dysphagia, vomiting and epigastric pain. Initial examination was unremarkable, but within 6h the patient suddenly deteriorated with a distended peritonitic abdomen. At laparotomy the patient was found to have gastric band slippage, a distended necrotic gastric pouch, a denuded spleen and a massive intraperitoneal haemorrhage of approximately 4l...

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery may prove an effective weight loss option for those struggling with severe obesity, but it is difficult to determine levels of interest in such procedures at the population level through traditional approaches. Analysis of Google Trend information may give providers and healthcare systems useful information regarding Internet users' interest in bariatric procedures. The objective of this study was to gather Google Trend information on worldwide Internet searches for "bariatric surgery", "gastric bypass", "gastric sleeve", "gastric plication", and "lap band" from 2004-2012 and to explore temporal relationships with relevant media events, economic variations, and policy modifications...

BACKGROUND: The intragastric balloon has been reported to be a safe and effective tool for temporary weight loss. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the possible predictive role of intragastric balloon when used before laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. METHODS: A longitudinal multicenter study was conducted in patients with body mass index (BMI)>35 kg/m(2) who underwent gastric banding with the BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB). After balloon removal (6 mo), patients were allocated into 2 group according to their percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL): group>25 (%EWL>25%) and group<25 (%EWL<25%)...

BACKGROUND: There are several models of adjustable gastric banding in use with little evidence for choosing a particular model. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors for selecting a particular type of band in terms of weight loss, complications, and co-morbidities. METHODS: From July 2006 to May 2012, 222 patients underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) by a single surgeon. Patient demographic characteristics, weight loss, body mass index (BMI), percentage of weight loss (%EWL), complications, and co-morbidities were retrospectively reviewed...
