OBJECTIVES: Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) is considered a rare inflammatory rheumatologic disorder that is seen primarily in older adult men. Patients present with arthralgias of large joints accompanied by painful pitting edema of the hands and feet. Few studies have reported the prevalence of metabolic syndromes, including diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia in these patients. METHODS: This case series reviewed 25 patients who were diagnosed as having RS3PE in a private outpatient clinic...

Combustion of mixed materials during open air burning of refuse or structural fires in the wildland urban interface produces emissions that worsen air quality, contaminate rivers and streams, and cause poor health outcomes including developmental effects. The zebrafish, a freshwater fish, is a useful model for quickly screening the toxicological and developmental effects of agents in such species and elicits biological responses that are often analogous and predictive of responses in mammals. The purpose of this study was to compare the developmental toxicity of smoke derived from the burning of 5 different burn pit-related material types (plywood, cardboard, plastic, a mixture of the three, and the mixture plus diesel fuel as an accelerant) in zebrafish larvae...

Aims: To assess differences in DVT clinical presentation between men and women and their effect on PTP and D-dimer. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in outpatients referred for suspected DVT of the lower limbs to our vascular emergency department from January 2005 to December 2019...

INTRODUCTION: Photoimmunotherapy (PIT) is a treatment wherein intravenous cetuximab sarotalocan sodium is administered followed by laser light irradiation. This treatment exhibits a specific antitumor effect if in tumors expressing the epidermal growth factor receptor, regardless of the carcinoma [Mitsunaga et al.: Nat Med. 2011;17(12):1685-91, Sato et al.: ACS Cent Sci. 2018;4(11):1559-69, Nakajima et al.: Cancer Sci. 2018;109(9):2889-96]. Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) is a rare clinical entity characterized by symmetrical tenosynovitis of both hands and ankles with pitting edema, negative rheumatoid factor (RF), absence of radiographic erosions, and excellent response to low-dose steroids. It is classically associated with elderly patients but may occur in younger patients, with only one case reported in the pediatric age. We report a case of RS3PE diagnosed in a pediatric patient.

BACKGROUND: Acute compartment syndrome can be caused by any condition that increases the pressure of an intracompartmental muscular space, resulting in ischemia, which is a limb-threatening emergency. This case report is the first known documented example of an exogenously injected peptide causing compartment syndrome. The use of natural supplements and holistic therapies is on the rise, specifically, peptide injections. It is important to obtain the history of use and routes of administration of these substances...

Other sites where it has been reported are the peritoneal cavity, tunica vaginalis, and the pericardium. OBJECTIVE: Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) is characterized by symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema and negative rheumatoid factor (RF). It has been described in a setting of malignancy, suggesting a paraneoplastic association. With the increasing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for the treatment of cancers and emergence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), our objective was to identify and describe cases of ICI-associated RS3PE (ICI-RS3PE) and compare them to non-ICI-RS3PE...

BACKGROUND Angioedema is non-pitting edema that occurs in the deep layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue due to vascular leakage of plasma resulting from 1 of 2 major pathophysiological processes: mast cell-mediated angioedema and bradykinin-mediated angioedema. While it is a well-recognized adverse reaction of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, the association of angioedema with angiotensin receptor blockers is relatively less studied. Direct local trauma, although rarely, has been suggested to induce angioedema under certain conditions...

Granuloma faciale (GF) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory dermatologic disease which is characterized by facial lesions. The diagnosis is mainly based on clinical and histopathology findings. It may be resistant to treatments and prone to relapse. Different treatment modalities include corticosteroid therapy, tacrolimus, cryotherapy and surgical methods. We report a case of GF in a patient with remitting seronegative symmetric synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE). A male patient with RS3PE presented with reddish brown soft nodules on and over lateral aspects of his nose and adjacent areas on his face which were diagnosed histologically as GF...

Puffy hand syndrome occurs in addicts who have injected drugs either intravenously, intradermally, or subcutaneously. It usually presents as bilateral reversible pitting edema of the hands; less frequently, it occurs unilaterally. The forearms and arms may also be affected. The onset of puffy hand syndrome can occur while the patient is still injecting drugs; however, it can initially appear several years after injection of the drug has been discontinued. Infection with hepatitis C is a common comorbidity. A 47-year-old man is described who had a 20-year history of injecting methylamphetamine only into his non-dominant left arm, forearm, and hand and experienced his second episode of unilateral puffy hand syndrome four years after discontinuing injecting the drug and three years after his initial episode; he also had hepatitis C infection...

INTRODUCTION: Chronic fluid accumulation or congestion is considered an important pathophysiologic mechanism in heart failure, leading to cardinal symptoms such as dyspnea, pulmonary congestion, and pitting edema. Edema index (EI) recently emerged as a surrogate for extracellular volume status and has been proven to be able to reflect one's congestion status. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of EI in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). METHODS: A total of 401 consecutive patients with CHF between August 2019 and October 2021 were prospectively enrolled...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Head and neck photoimmuno-therapy (HN-PIT) has been an insured treatment in Japan for approximately three years. The number of treatments has gradually increased to over 350 cases. However, there are still various questions in actual clinical practice, including laryngeal edema. Therefore, it is vital to carefully explain in advance to patients the possibility of laryngeal edema occurring and obtaining consent for tracheostomy as a prophylactic or emergency measure. At our institution, 44 HN-PIT cycles were performed in 23 patients between January 2021 and October 2023...
