BACKGROUND: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing (BVP) is a well-established therapy in patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), heart failure, and left bundle branch (LBB) block. LBB area pacing (LBBAP) has recently been shown to be a feasible and effective alternative to BVP. Comparative data on the risk of complications between LBBAP and BVP among patients undergoing CRT are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the long-term risk of procedure-related complications between LBBAP and BVP in a cohort of patients undergoing CRT...

Renal involvement is very common in patients with HIV infection. The phenotype varies from the most frequently "collapsing" variant of focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) to "lupus-like HIV-immune complex kidney disease" (HIVICK). The latter is characterized by a histological picture that recalls lupus nephropathy. Through a clinical case, we underline the importance of urinary sediment analysis in patients with suspected glomerulopathy. Findings such as the characteristic cells that show the typical appearance of Herpes virus (HSV) infection or LE cells have significantly supported the diagnosis of HIVICK...

Anti-IgLON5 disease is a rare and likely underdiagnosed subtype of autoimmune encephalitis. The disease displays a heterogeneous phenotype that includes sleep, movement, and bulbar-associated dysfunction. Presence of IgLON5-antibodies in CSF/serum, together with a strong association with HLA-DRB1*10:01∼DQB1*05:01, support an autoimmune basis. In this study, a multicentric HLA study of 87 anti-IgLON5 patients revealed a stronger association with HLA-DQ than HLA-DR. Specifically, we identified a predisposing rank-wise association with HLA-DQA1*01:05∼DQB1*05:01, HLA-DQA1*01:01∼DQB1*05:01 and HLA-DQA1*01:04∼DQB1*05:03 in 85% of patients...

The advancement of anti-cancer therapies has markedly improved the survival rate of children with cancer, making them long-term childhood cancer survivors (CCS). Nevertheless, these treatments cause a low-grade inflammatory state, determining inflamm-aging and, thus, favoring the early onset of chronic diseases normally associated with old age. Identification of novel and safer therapeutic strategies is needed to counteract and prevent inflamm-aging. Macrophages are cells involved in immune and inflammatory responses, with a pivotal role in iron metabolism, which is related to inflammation...

This article examines the evolution of bariatric surgery, with a focus on emerging technologies such as robotics and laparoscopy. In the case of gastric bypass, no significant differences have emerged between the two techniques in terms of hospitalization duration, weight loss, weight regain, or 30-day mortality. Robotic surgery, while requiring more time in the operating room, has been associated with lower rates of bleeding, mortality, transfusions, and infections. In revisional bariatric surgery, the robotic approach has shown fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and a reduced need for conversion to open surgery...

A 71-year-old male who suffered from Hoehn and Yahr stage III Parkinson's disease with bradykinesia, rigidity and a 5-6-Hz tremor at rest in the right extremities was admitted to our hospital due to the sudden onset of vertigo. Right cerebellar hemorrhage was confirmed by CT. The patient's resting tremor in the right extremities disappeared immediately following the cerebellar hemorrhage. Six days later, MRI showed Wallerian degeneration in the cerebello-rubro-thalamic tract. Approximately 5 months later, a 2-3-Hz Holmes' tremor gradually appeared in the right upper extremity...

Passive solid-state radiation detectors, based on the visible photoluminescence of radiation-induced colour centres in optically transparent lithium fluoride (LiF), polycrystalline thin films are under investigation for proton beam advanced diagnostics. After proton exposure, the latent images stored in LiF as local formations of stable F2 and F3+ aggregate defects, are directly read with a fluorescence microscope under illumination in the blue spectral range. Adopting a suitable irradiation geometry, the energy density that protons deposit in the material can be recorded as a spatial distribution of these light-emitting defects, from which a luminous replica of the proton Bragg curve can be thereafter extracted and analysed to reconstruct the proton beam energy spectrum...

UNLABELLED: Inflammation is widely acknowledged as a significant characteristic of cancer, playing a substantial function in both the initiation and advancement of cancers. In this research, we planned to compare pan-immune inflammation markers and other well-known markers (systemic immune inflammation index and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio) to predict prognosis in individuals treated with radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, we focused on preoperative PIV, systemic immune inflammation index (SII), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in 193 individuals managed with radical cystectomy for bladder cancer between January 2016 and November 2022...

PURPOSE: Pathogenic variants of FIG4 generate enlarged lysosomes and neurological and developmental disorders. To identify additional genes regulating lysosomal volume, we carried out a genome-wide activation screen to detect suppression of enlarged lysosomes in FIG4-/- cells. METHODS: The CRISPR-a gene activation screen utilized sgRNAs from the promoters of protein coding genes. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting separated cells with correction of the enlarged lysosomes from uncorrected cells...

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant brain tumor with uncontrolled invasive growth. Here, we demonstrate how GBM cells usurp guidance receptor Plexin-B2 to gain biomechanical plasticity for polarized migration through confined space. Using live-cell imaging to track GBM cells negotiating microchannels, we reveal active endocytosis at cell front and filamentous actin assembly at rear to propel GBM cells through constrictions. These two processes are interconnected and governed by Plexin-B2 that orchestrates cortical actin and membrane tension, shown by biomechanical assays...

BACKGROUND: Cognitive changes are common in corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and significantly impact quality of life and caregiver burden. However, there is a scarcity of studies investigating the neural substrates of cognitive changes in CBS, and currently, reliable predictors of cognitive impairment are lacking. The nucleus basalis of Meynert (NbM), which serves as the primary source of cortical cholinergic innervation, has been functionally associated with cognition. This study aimed to explore whether patients with CBS exhibit reduced NbM volumes compared to healthy controls and whether NbM degeneration can serve as a predictor of cognitive impairment in CBS patients...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the Substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), which leads to motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS). NMS can appear many years before the classical motor symptoms and are associated with the neurodegeneration of several nuclei; in this work, we highlight the neurodegeneration of Locus coeruleus (LC) in PD. The aim was to investigate the effects of depleting SNpc and LC catecholaminergic neurons on behavioral and neurobiological endpoints...
