Gout, one of the most ancient documented diseases in history, has long captivated artists, yielding a rich collection of artworks. This interest peaked during the Enlightenment era in Europe, a time marked by a surge in gout cases alongside rising wealth, consumerism, and subsequent increased public access to artists. This editorial aims to highlight an intriguing observation of a novel association within several Enlightenment-era paintings depicting individuals suffering from gout and often also portraying the distinctive red noses and cheeks seen in patients with rosacea...

Current scientific literature often defines gout as morbus dominorum, in agreement with the Greek-Roman representation of podagra (ποδάγρα, literally "foot-trap") as a consequence of gluttony and libertinage. Several authors place the origins of this expression with the Roman writer Suetonius, without however quoting any specific primary source. We have investigated this problem again and scrutinized primary sources ranging from the Roman World to the early Middle Ages...

BACKGROUND: The case histories in the writings of the Greco-Roman physician Galen of Pergamum have so far been interpreted primarily in literary and socio-historic terms. Analysis focused on the medical aspects is still incomplete. QUESTION: Which competence for the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system do the Galenic case reports communicate? STUDY DESIGN AND RESEARCH METHODS: The 358 Galenic case histories were studied for anamnestic, clinical, therapeutic, and epidemiological statements on inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system...

Major historical investigatory steps are described in relation to causality and pathogenesis of the disease from Hippocrates ages till the modern time. The newest genetic and epidemiologic aspects of the disease are presented in this article.

Gout is a crystal deposition disorder caused due to the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in joints and other tissues secondary to hyperuricemia. Podagra is the term for gout of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. In our case report, a 30-year-old male patient came to our OPD with complaints of swelling over the first metatarsophalangeal joint for one year, which was insidious in onset, localized, and had a sudden increase in size over the past three months. The patient also complained of an inability to properly wear his shoe...

This paper presents remarkably uniform data showing that higher NLR is a robust prognostic indicator of shorter overall survival across the common metastatic cancers. Myeloid derived suppressor cells, the NLRP3 inflammasome, neutrophil extracellular traps, and absolute neutrophil count tend to all be directly related to the NLR. They, individually and as an ensemble, contribute to cancer growth and metastasis. The multidrug regimen presented in this paper, TICO, was designed to decrease the NLR with potential to also reduce the other neutrophil related elements favoring malignant growth...

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence rate of gout and to explore the social factors that contributed to its development in the various sub-populations in medieval Cambridge. MATERIALS: 177 adult individuals from four medieval cemeteries located in and around Cambridge, UK. METHODS: Lesions were assessed macroscopically and radiographically. Elements with lytic lesions were described and imaged using micro-computed tomography (μCT) to determine their morphology...

OBJECTIVES: In Antiquity, colchicine was used as a poison and as a remedy for Podagra. Research so far has revealed that the physician Alexander of Tralles was the first who used it in the 6th century AD. Alexander recommended a plant he called "Hermodaktylon", which takes off the pain in the feet immediately. "Hermodaktylon" is identified with Colchicum autumnale L., which contains colchicine in his bulbs and seeds. We will present new data that varieties of Colchicum were used for medical treatment of Podagra far earlier than hitherto known by research...

BACKGROUND: Gout or hyperuricemia are both well known and common diseases. The prevalence of gout is increasing worldwide. Thus, patients with gout are becoming more common. Although there are several published guidelines for the management of gout, actual treatment of gout is inconsistent with these guidelines in many respects. Gout is usually treated by general practitioners (GP) in Germany. The aim of our study was to show which patients present to the emergency department and to record how treatment and clinical diagnostic testing of gout patients is performed in the emergency department of a university hospital in Germany...

OBJECTIVE: The language currently used to describe gout lacks standardization. The aim of this project was to develop a consensus statement on the labels and definitions used to describe the basic disease elements of gout. METHODS: Experts in gout (n = 130) were invited to participate in a Delphi exercise and face-to-face consensus meeting to reach consensus on the labeling and definitions for the basic disease elements of gout. Disease elements and labels in current use were derived from a content analysis of the contemporary medical literature, and the results of this analysis were used for item selection in the Delphi exercise and face-to-face consensus meeting...

The plants of the Colchicum family were known during the archaic period in Greece for their deleterious properties. Later on, they were used for the treatment of podagra. The treatment was introduced by the ancient Greek physicians and passed on to the Byzantine and Arabian physicians to endure until nowadays. The first plant was most probably named "Medea" from the notorious Colchican witch. As the most common member of the family blossoms in autumn, the plant was named Colchicum autumnale. Various nominations were also used, such as Ephemeron, Hermodactyl, Anima articulorum and Surugen...

Gout is the most prevalent inflammatory arthritis and affects 2.5% of the general population in the UK. It is also the only arthritis that has the potential to be cured with safe, inexpensive and well tolerated urate-lowering treatments, which reduce serum uric acid by either inhibiting xanthine oxidase - eg allopurinol, febuxostat - or by increasing the renal excretion of uric acid. Of these, xanthine oxidase inhibitors are used first line and are effective in 'curing' gout in the vast majority of patients...

Gout is a very old disease, which exists for thousands of years. The first descriptions interpreted as the symptoms of gout can be found already in the Egyptian medical papyri dating to the 3rd mill. BC. In the Ancient world, many physicians dealt with the causes, diagnostics and the treatments of gout, such as Hippocrates of Cos, Diocles of Carystus or Claudios Galenos. A personified gout (as the goddess Podagra) is also to be found in the Ancient mythology and culture. Several human remnants of the people suffering from gout are preserved from the Antiquity as well...
