INTRODUCTION: Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis are rare benign mesenchymal adipose tumors that originate from embryonic white adipocytes and occur most commonly in infancy and early childhood. Lipoblastomas occur in the extremities and trunk, including the retroperitoneum and peritoneal cavity. Therefore, infiltration into the spinal canal has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old girl presented to our clinic because of difficulty sitting on the floor with her legs straight...

Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is one of the most well-known gastrointestinal motility disorders. Diagnosis and management of other lesser-known motility disorders are often challenging and tedious. We describe a teenager who was severely constipated from birth and needed intensive care admissions for life-threatening enterocolitis. She also had concomitant anal stenosis. Several rectal biopsies were unable to yield a conclusive diagnosis. Surgical level of resection had to be identified based on the motility of the bowel as determined by transit studies using oral ingestion of a milk feed labelled with Technetium-99m colloid...

BACKGROUND: There is evidence for an association between maternal psychopathology and offspring incontinence and constipation, but it is unclear if there is a critical/sensitive period of exposure to maternal depression and/or anxiety in the antenatal or postnatal period. METHODS: Mothers from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children provided data on their depression and anxiety (antenatal and postnatal) and their child's urinary and faecal incontinence and constipation at age 7 (6489 participants)...

BACKGROUND: Childhood functional constipation is a worldwide problem that affects the intestinal function of children and the quality of life of their families. Treatment and management of the disease need to be carried out at home by parents. Assessment of caregiving needs is an important link in planning and implementing the intervention. This study aimed to assess the caregiving needs of parents of FC infants and toddlers. METHODS: The researchers recruited convenience samples of parents from an outpatient pediatric constipation clinic of a children's medical center...

BACKGROUND: Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) and related disorders newly referred to as inactivating PTH/PTHrP Signaling Disorders (iPPSD) are rare endocrine diseases. Many clinical features including obesity, neurocognitive impairment, brachydactyly, short stature, parathyroid hormone (PTH)-resistance, and resistance to other hormones such as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) have been well described, yet they refer mainly to the full development of the disease during late childhood and adulthood...

OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to determine bowel and bladder function in children aged one month to seven years in the general Dutch population. Second, we aimed to identify demographic factors associated with the presence of bowel and bladder dysfunction, and their coexistence. METHODS: For this cross-sectional, population-based study, parents/caregivers of children aged from one month to seven years were asked to complete the Early Pediatric Groningen Defecation and Fecal Continence questionnaire...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mesenteric cysts are uncommon intra-abdominal benign masses that appear in childhood with varying degrees of clinical manifestations, ranging from being asymptomatic to presenting as an acute abdomen. The diagnosis is made incidentally during the work-up for other abdominal pathologies such as acute appendicitis, bowel obstruction, etc. The treatment is mostly surgical and varies depending on the clinical type of the lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-month-old child was referred to our teaching hospital's pediatric surgery department with an abdominal mass...

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental problem that presents with limited interests, repetitive behaviors, and deficits in reciprocal communication and social interactions. Mounting evidence indicates that an imbalanced gut microbiota contributes to autism via the gut-brain axis. Constipation may result in alteration of the gut microbiota. The clinical influence of constipation on ASD has not been fully researched. Thus, in this study we aimed to evaluate whether early childhood constipation influenced the risk of developing ASD using a nationwide population-based cohort study...

Constipation is common in childhood. It is a frequent presentation to primary care and common reason for referral to secondary and tertiary care. In the majority of cases, childhood constipation is idiopathic, with no significant underlying cause, but still presents a significant issue to patients, families and healthcare providers. We consider a case of idiopathic constipation, review the current evidence base for investigations and treatment and suggest practical management strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Angelman syndrome (AS) is widely described in childhood, but few studies have been conducted in adulthood and most of them report a small number of patients or specific conditions, such as epilepsy or sleep. AIM: The aim of this study is to describe AS in adulthood in our centre, the special needs it requires, and the medical and social support to improve care and to provide a better transition from the paediatric service to units for adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected patients with genetically confirmed AS, and described demographic, medical and social data by reviewing medical records, telephone interviews with the primary caregiver and three standardised sleep, dependency and quality of life scales...

Functional constipation is a common problem in childhood worldwide and has a great impact on social, physical, and emotional functioning of affected children and their caregivers. It is a clinical diagnosis based on the Rome IV criteria. Non-pharmacological treatment involves education, demystification, lifestyle advice, and toilet training. Pharmacological treatment consists of disimpaction, maintenance treatment, and eventually weaning if possible. Polyethylene glycol is considered as the first choice of laxative for both disimpaction and maintenance treatment...

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) may be helpful in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as rebalancing the gut microbiome has been shown to potentially improve behavioral symptoms in children with ASD. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted to assess the effect of FMT for children with ASD. OBJECTIVE: Functional constipation is the most common form of constipation, and its exact aetiology is still unclear. However, it is known that deficiencies in hormonal factors cause constipation by changing physiological mechanisms. Motilin, ghrelin, serotonin acetylcholine, nitric oxide, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide are factors that play a role in colon motility. There are a limited number of studies in the literature where hormone levels and gene polymorphisms of serotonin and motilin are examined...

Constipation is a common reason for children seeking medical care worldwide. Abdominal complaints and constipation are also common in lead-poisoned children. This study evaluates the prevalence of abnormal blood lead levels (BLL) among pediatric and adolescent patients and examines the association of constipation with elevated BLL. This was a prospective data collection of patients younger than 18 years old with the chief complaint of constipation seen in the Mofid Children's Hospital gastroenterology clinic and Loghman Hakim pediatric and pediatric gastroenterology clinics were eligible for enrollment in this study...

INTRODUCTION: The management of childhood constipation is challenging. Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is one of the most common causes of childhood constipation. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) with pelvic floor exercises (PFE) has achieved a satisfactory outcome in the elderly individuals and women with PFD. The efficacy of PTNS with PFE in childhood constipation has not been established. METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial with 84 children who met the inclusion criteria was conducted...

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal duplications are uncommon congenital abnormalities that can occur anywhere throughout the intestinal tract. The small bowel is more interested than the large one. Duplications are schematically classified as spherical and tubular, respectively representing 80% and 20% of cases, with different relationships and communications with the native intestinal wall. Although typically diagnosed during infancy and early childhood, tubular colonic sub-type stays frequently hidden for several years until a complication occurs...
