In a recent 99mTc-HYNIC-PSMA study conducted at our department, we examined 2 patients with prostate cancer referred for initial staging on the same day. The whole-body scans revealed radiotracer uptake in the gastric mucosa and thyroid glands, alluding to high levels of free TcO4- in the injected vial. The scans were repeated after confirming acceptable radiopharmaceutical purity of 97% (normal range, 95%-100%). Interestingly, 1 patient had liver metastases at presentation, which remained non-PSMA-avid after repeating the scan...

Aromatic amino acids (AAs) have garnered particular interest due to their pivotal roles in numerous biological processes and disorders. Variations in AA self-assembly not only affect protein structures and functions, but their non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and π-π stacking, yield versatile assemblies vital in bio-inspired material fabrication. Tyrosine (Tyr), a non-essential aromatic amino acid, holds multifaceted significance in the body as a protein building block, neurotransmitter precursor, thyroid hormone contributor, and melanin synthesis regulator...

Myxedema psychosis (MP), a rare psychiatric manifestation of hypothyroidism, presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This case report details the presentation, diagnosis, and successful management of a 60-year-old woman with MP, who was initially admitted to the psychiatric department for new-onset psychosis following the cessation of hormone replacement therapy after a subtotal thyroidectomy performed 20 years prior. Despite the rarity of psychosis as an initial presentation of hypothyroidism, this case underscores the critical importance of considering endocrine disorders in the differential diagnosis of unexplained psychotic symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Among other structures, nuclear grooves are vastly found in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Considering that the application of artificial intelligence in thyroid cytology has potential for diagnostic routine, our goal was to develop a new supervised convolutional neural network capable of identifying nuclear grooves in Diff-Quik stained whole-slide images (WSI) obtained from thyroid fineneedle aspiration. METHODS: We selected 22 Diff-Quik stained cytological slides with cytological diagnosis of PTC and concordant histological diagnosis...

BACKGROUND: Thyroid eye disease (TED), particularly its sight-threatening complication, dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON), profoundly impacts patients' visual health. The pathological changes in the white matter (WM) fibers within the intracranial visual pathway in TED have been infrequently studied. Understanding these changes holds crucial importance for exploring the pathogenesis and prognosis of TED. PURPOSE: To utilize fixel-based analysis (FBA) to clarify the type of microstructural damage occurring in the visual pathway in TED...

PURPOSE: Swallow-related motion of the larynx is most significant in the cranio-caudal directions and of` short duration. Conventional target definition for radical radiation therapy includes coverage of the whole larynx. This study longitudinally examined respiration- and swallow-related laryngeal motions using cine-magnetic resonance imaging. We further analyzed the dosimetry to organs at risk by comparing 3D-conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques...

Despite their low incidence, they pose diagnostic challenges and display diverse clinical outcomes. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the clinicopathological profile of Hurthle cell tumors within a tertiary care center in South India. The greatest challenge is in understanding the best model to apply to one's own patient population, and how to operationalize such a model in practice. RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Thyroid nodules are a common incidental imaging finding and prone to overdiagnosis. Several risk stratification systems have been developed to reduce unnecessary work-up, with two of the most utilized including the American Thyroid Association 2015 (ATA2015) and the newer American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging, Reporting and Data System (TIRADS) guidelines. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the ATA2015 versus the TIRADS guidelines in the management of incidental thyroid nodules...

Theranostics define diagnostic evaluations directing patient-specific therapeutic decisions. Molecular theranostics involves genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic and finally phenonic definitions thyroid cancer differentiation. It is the functional differentiation that determines the sensitivity and accuracy of RAI imaging as well as the effectiveness of RAI treatment. Total thyroidectomy is performed to empower an anticipated RAI treatment. A preoperative determination of the genomic and transcriptomic profile of the tumor is a strong predictor of response to therapeutic interventions...

To investigate the value of preoperative ultrasound combined with 99mTc-MIBI imaging for the diagnosis of ectopic intrathyroid parathyroid gland (ETPG) in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). One hundred and eleven patients with SHPT who underwent total parathyroidectomy plus forearm transplantation from January 2015 to January 2022 in the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University were selected. All patients underwent routine preoperative ultrasonography and 99mTc-MIBI imaging, and with pathological diagnosis as the gold standard, the clinical data of ETPG patients were selected, including clinical manifestations, laboratory tests, preoperative ultrasonography and 99mTc-MIBI imaging for localization and diagnosis, intraoperative exploration and postoperative pathology, and postoperative follow-up...

Many of the tissues/lesions in the medical images may be ambiguous. Therefore, medical segmentation is typically annotated by a group of clinical experts to mitigate personal bias. A common solution to fuse different annotations is the majority vote, e.g., taking the average of multiple labels. However, such a strategy ignores the difference between the grader expertness. Inspired by the observation that medical image segmentation is usually used to assist the disease diagnosis in clinical practice, we propose the diagnosis-first principle, which is to take disease diagnosis as the criterion to calibrate the inter-observer segmentation uncertainty...

The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a 12-week doxycycline treatment for thyroid eye disease (TED), an autoimmune condition associated with thyroid dysfunction. In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 82 patients were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio to receive doxycycline (50 mg) or to undergo no treatment. Various metrics, including margin reflex distance (MRD1 and MRD2), eyelid aperture, levator muscle function, lagophthalmos, proptosis, ocular motility, diplopia, and Graves' ophthalmopathy-specific quality-of-life (GO-QOL) scale scoring were assessed...

Thyroid abscess is a rare entity, commonly experienced by immunocompromised patients, or those who have anatomical abnormalities or a pre-existing thyroid disease. An early diagnosis continued by treatment with antibiotics and drainage of the abscess is the recommended therapeutic strategy for such cases. The present study describes a clinical case of this rare event, and also provides a brief literature review. The present study describes the case of a 48-year-old healthy male with no medical antecedents, apart from acute prostatitis treated with antibiotics for 6 days prior, who visited the Emergency Department of the authors' hospital with neck pain and progressive swelling of the mass...

Thyroid storm is a rare but well-known life-threatening complication that occurs due to acute exacerbation of thyrotoxicosis with the increased levels of circulating thyroid hormones. Reports of metabolic encephalopathy associated with thyroid storm are scarce. We describe the case of a 23-year-old male patient with no previous history of abnormal thyroid function who had consumed excessive amounts of alcohol before disease onset. The patient was found unconscious and febrile on a roadside by a passerby and was admitted to our hospital's emergency department...
