PURPOSE: The prevalence of severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP) requiring hospitalization has been associated with female fetal sex. However, the question of whether fetal sex and less severe forms of NVP share that association has not been investigated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between fetal sex and the frequency of NVP. METHODS: We collected self-reported data from mothers via an international web-based survey on the Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) platform about pregnancy and first trimester NVP history...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how health issues affect voting behaviour by considering the COVID-19 pandemic, which offers a unique opportunity to examine this interplay. DESIGN: We employ a survey experiment in which treatment groups are exposed to key facts about the pandemic, followed by questions intended to elicit attitudes toward the incumbent party and government responsibility for the pandemic. SETTING: The survey was conducted amid the lockdown period of 15-26 April 2020 in three large democratic countries with the common governing language of English: India, the United Kingdom and the United States...

BACKGROUND: Treatment for tuberculosis lasts for a minimum of 6 months. The treatment burden experienced by patients in a low-incidence setting where directly observed therapy is the standard of care is not well-known. METHODS: Patients receiving tuberculosis treatment through the chest clinic at a tertiary hospital in Sydney, Australia, participated in a semi-structured interview. The interviews explored the treatment burden experienced by patients and possible solutions to ameliorate this burden...

Uncertain genetic information such as variants of uncertain significance (VUS) is often encountered by patients in clinical cancer genetic testing. Although healthcare providers facilitate patient's understanding of VUS-associated empirical risk and its medical implications, patients' understanding and perceptions of risk often differ and may be based on subjective evaluations such as their perception of provider's epistemic authority (EA). This study examines the hypothesis that individuals attribute greater EA to genetic counselors (GCs) (compared to gastrointestinal oncologists) and to providers who recommend more active VUS-related recommendations (compared to inactive)...

CONTEXT: Dipeptidylpeptidase (DPP)-4 is a key regulator of the incretin system. It exists in a membrane bound form and a soluble form (= sDPP-4). Initial human studies suggested sDPP-4 to be an adipokine involved in metabolic inflammation. However, recent mechanistic data in genetically modified mice questioned these findings. OBJECTIVES: We examined circulating sDPP-4 in a cohort of n = 451 humans with different metabolic phenotypes and during three different weight loss interventions (n = 101) to further clarify its role in human physiology and metabolic diseases...

T cell activation is a cornerstone in manufacturing of T cell-based therapies, and precise control over T cell activation is important in the development of the next generation T-cell based therapeutics. This need cannot be fulfilled by currently available methods for T cell stimulation, in particular not in a time dependent manner. Here, we describe a modular activation reagent called Expamers, which addresses these limitations. Expamers are versatile stimuli that are intended for research and clinical use...

MØ-iPLA2 β-KO mice exhibited normal glucose tolerance when fed standard chow and better glucose tolerance than floxed-iPLA2 β control mice after consuming a high-fat diet (HFD). MØ-iPLA2 β-KO mice exhibited normal glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in vivo and from isolated islets ex vivo compared to controls...

Animated transitions help viewers follow changes between related visualizations. Specifying effective animations demands significant effort: authors must select the elements and properties to animate, provide transition parameters, and coordinate the timing of stages. To facilitate this process, we present Gemini, a declarative grammar and recommendation system for animated transitions between single-view statistical graphics. Gemini specifications define transition "steps" in terms of high-level visual components (marks, axes, legends) and composition rules to synchronize and concatenate steps...

OBJECTIVES: Reward devaluation theory (RDT) posits that some depressed individuals avoid positivity due to its previous association with negative outcomes. Behavioral indicators of avoidance of reward support RDT, but self-report indicators have yet to be examined discriminantly. Two candidate self-report measures were examined in relation to depression: negative affect interference (NAI), or the experience of negative affect in response to positivity, and fear of happiness, a fear of prospective happiness...

All COVID-19 prevention strategies include regular use of surface disinfectants and hand sanitisers. As these measures took hold in Croatia, the Croatian Poison Control Centre started receiving phone calls from the general public and healthcare workers, which prompted us to investigate whether the risk of suspected/symptomatic poisonings with disinfectants and sanitisers really increased. To that end we compared their frequency and characteristics in the first half of 2019 and 2020. Cases of exposures to disinfectants doubled in the first half of 2020 (41 vs 21 cases in 2019), and exposure to sanitisers increased about nine times (46 vs 5 cases in 2019)...

Background: Since the outbreak of COVID-19, physical and psychological harm has been spreading across the global population alongside the spread of the virus. Currently, the novel coronavirus has spread to most countries in the world, and its impact on the public is also increasing. BACKGROUND: The Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) is recommended for use in clinical research to assess trunk impairment post-stroke. However, it is observer dependent and does not consider the quality of trunk movement. To address these challenges, this study proposes an instrumented TIS (iTIS). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the iTIS in chronic stroke patients. METHOD: Trunk impairment was assessed in 20 patients with stroke using the iTIS Valedo system; three sensors were fixed to the skin on the sternum, L1 and S1 levels...

Doxycycline concentrations in plasma, liver, kidney, muscle, and skin + fat were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet. Reelin is a secreted glycoprotein that is integral in neocortex development and synaptic function. Reelin exists as a homodimer with two chains linked by a disulfide bond at cysteine 2101, a feature that is vital to the protein's function. This is highlighted by the fact that only dimeric Reelin can elicit efficient, canonical signaling, even though a mutated (C2101A) monomeric construct of Reelin retains the capacity to bind to its receptors. Receptor clustering has been shown to be important in the signaling pathway, however direct evidence regarding the stoichiometry of Reelin-receptor binding interaction is lacking...
