Background: Mental health stigma on social media is well studied, but not from the perspective of mental health service users. Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) increased mental health discussions and may have impacted stigma. Objectives: (1) to understand how service users perceive and define mental health stigma on social media; (2) how COVID-19 shaped mental health conversations and social media use. Methods: We collected 2,700 tweets related to seven mental health conditions: schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, autism, eating disorders, OCD, and addiction...

In the present study we aimed to measure IS among outpatients with OCD, and to assess its relationship with clinical and sociodemographic variables, and quality of life. Out of 100 patients assessed, 79 patients with OCD were included in the study. Each patient was assessed using the SCID-5 CV, Y-BOCS, ISMI Scale, and WHOQOL-BREF. There was a strong correlation of IS with lower QoL and severity of OCD symptoms. Avoidance behavior, psychological health and social relationship domains emerged as independent factors related to IS in the regression analysis...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article describes the phenomenology and clinical presentation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a common but underdiagnosed psychiatric disorder. Guidance for effectively identifying obsessive-compulsive symptoms is provided, and treatment options, including psychotherapy, pharmacologic management, and neuromodulation approaches for treatment-resistant OCD, are discussed. RECENT FINDINGS: OCD affects 2% to 3% of adults worldwide and is associated with substantial individual disability and societal costs...

We aimed at investigating the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on individuals with problematic hoarding behaviors. One hundred seventeen subjects with hoarding problems responded to the Coronavirus Stressful and Traumatic Rating Scale (COROTRAS), an instrument that quantified the number of coronavirus-related events, whether they were experienced as stressful, and the range of emotions resulting from them. The research subjects also answered self-report tools to evaluate the severity of hoarding, hoarding beliefs/motivations, social support, self-efficacy, internalized stigma, and other psychopathological symptoms...

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people around the world. Anxiety related to infection, stress and stigma caused by the forced changes in daily life have reportedly increased the incidence and symptoms of depression, anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Under such circumstances, telepsychiatry is gaining importance and attracting a great deal of attention. However, few large pragmatic clinical trials on the use of telepsychiatry targeting multiple psychiatric disorders have been conducted to date...

INTRODUCTION: Although most studies report neurocognitive deficits in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), important exceptions exist, highlighting the possible role of mediators (e.g., poor motivation). This study investigated neurocognitive functioning and potential influences affecting performance in OCD. METHODS: Forty-three participants (13 OCD patients, 30 healthy controls) were assessed using a battery of neurocognitive tests. During the assessment, the examiner completed the Impact on Performance Scale (IPS) which measures variables that may impact neurocognitive performance...

BACKGROUND: "Impulse Control Disorders" are behavioral conditions (e.g., gambling, hypersexuality), which are increasingly reported as reactions to dopamine agonists in Parkinson's disease. The Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease focuses only on 6 behaviors. Nonetheless, impulsivity could affect the entire range of human practices. Because of their heterogeneity and undefined boundaries, it is not clear what conditions should be considered as Impulse Control Disorders...

Because children and adolescents are vulnerable to developing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), classroom teachers play an important role in the early identification and intervention in students with OCD. The present study aims to explore the recognition of OCD, general knowledge about this disorder, implications in the classroom, and stigmatizing attitudes among teachers, as well as the effectiveness of a brief educational intervention about OCD. Participants ( n = 95; mean age = 43. 29 years old; 64.3% female) were primary and secondary school teachers who were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a control group...

We report the case of a biological female with gender identity-related doubts that were misconstrued as suggesting obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The patient's parent seemed to favor an OCD explanation for the gender-based self-questioning over acceptance of possible transgender identity. We discuss what OCD is and what it is not in the context of gender identity-based doubt; analogy with the better studied sexual orientation-related OCD; cultural flashpoints around sex and gender that can become the object of OCD; how confusion about biological sex, assigned gender and gender identity can lead to clinical harm; and the role of mental health professionals in fighting the stigma faced by gender minorities...

COVID-19 has spread worldwide. People are struggling to adjust to a new normal, but changes in their daily routines are also causing stress. A person may feel depressed, uneasy, or suicidal and may complain of symptoms such as panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disease (PTSD), psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or paranoia when personal resilience cannot effectively process the stress. Children, adolescents, and health care workers are especially psychologically vulnerable groups in the pandemic calamity situation; therefore, a long-term intervention plan is necessary for them...

In 2018, a graduate level student filed a complaint regarding the use of exposure-based therapy for persons with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experiencing violent obsessions. In the investigation, the licensing board expressed concern about safety of us of exposure and response prevention (ERP) with children and in public venues. The licensing board also struggled with accurate assessment of a clinician's efficacy in following the gold-standard treatment for OCD. Despite extensive research demonstrating ERP is a safe, effective treatment for OCD, stigma against exposure based treatments remain strong, even among clinicians...
