To enhance the adsorption performance of municipal sludge biochar on Cd(II), modified sludge biochar was prepared by sodium hydroxide/magnesium chloride (NaOH/MgCl2 ) graded activation, and the Cd(II) adsorption performance on sludge biochar (BC), NaOH-activated sludge biochar (NBC) and NaOH/MgCl2 activated sludge biochar (NBC-Mg) was investigated. The results showed that NaOH/MgCl2 graded activation upgraded the surface structure and enhanced the graphitization of sludge biochar. The adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm for Cd(II) were in accordance with the pseudo second-order kinetic and Langmuir model...

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA) is a common TMJ degenerative disease with an unclear mechanism. Synovial fluid (SF), an important component of TMJ, contains various proteins and metabolites that may directly contribute to OA. The present study aimed to investigate the influence of SF in TMJOA at the metabolite level. METHODS: Untargeted and widely targeted metabolic profiling were employed to identify metabolic changes in SF of 90 patients with different TMJOA grades according to TMJ magnetic resonance imaging...

The new technologies used in the green transition towards carbon-free societies typically demand extensive use of metals. This leads to a heavily growing need for exploration and extraction of ore deposits. Exploration can be facilitated by measuring metal concentrations in ground and surface waters carrying trace concentrations of metals leached from nearby deposits. Currently, measuring metal concentrations in water is slow and expensive and it cannot be done on-site, which hinders the discovery of new ore deposits...

BACKGROUND: Organomodified nanoclays (ONC), two-dimensional montmorillonite with organic coatings, are increasingly used to improve nanocomposite properties. However, little is known about pulmonary health risks along the nanoclay life cycle even with increased evidence of airborne particulate exposures in occupational environments. Recently, oropharyngeal aspiration exposure to pre- and post-incinerated ONC in mice caused low grade, persistent lung inflammation with a pro-fibrotic signaling response with unknown mode(s) of action...

BACKGROUND: The poultry industry encounters a number of factors that affect growth performance and productivity; nutrition is essential for sustaining physiological status and protecting against stressors such as heat, density, and disease. The addition of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids to the diet can help restore productivity and support the body's defense mechanisms against stress. Methionine (Met) is indispensable for poultry's energy metabolism, physiology, performance, and feed utilization capacity...

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is composed of immunoglobulins derived from the plasma of healthy donors. Numerous anti-inflammatory pathways are responsible for IVIG's anti-inflammatory action The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of IVIG on experimental-induced osteoporosis. Frailty is associated with declines in physiological capacity across sensory, neurological, and musculoskeletal systems. An underlying assumption is that the frailer an individual, the more likely they are to experience falls and fractures. We examined whether grades of frailty can assess the long-term risk of hospitalized falls, fractures, and all-cause mortality in 1261 community-dwelling older women (mean age [SD] of 75.1 [2.7] yr) over 14.5 yr. Frailty was operationalized using a frailty index (FI) of cumulative deficits from 33 variables across multiple health domains (physical, mental, comorbidities) at baseline...

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) in the lumbar spine can potentially lead to an overestimation of bone mineral density (BMD), and this can be a challenge in accurately diagnosing conditions like osteoporosis, where precise measurement of BMD is crucial. Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry (REMS) is being recognized as an innovative diagnostic tool for assessing bone status. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the use of REMS may enhance the identification of osteoporosis in patients with osteoarthritis...

Regenerated cellulose fibers has attracted increasing attention for high-grade textile raw materials and industrial textiles, but the low mechanical property caused by differences in regenerated raw materials and production levels limits its commercial application in the product diversity. Herein, we proposed a novel triple-crosslinking strategy by coupling with hydrogen bonds, chemical crosslinking, and internal mineralization from multiple pulsed vapor phase infiltration (MPI) to improve the mechanical performance of regenerated cellulose fibers...

This investigation examined the clinical implications of mild vertebral fractures in older community-dwelling residents. Focusing on the locomotion health of older individuals, the earlier reported Obuse study enrolled 415 randomly sampled Japanese residents aged between 50 and 89 years, 411 of whom underwent X-ray evaluations for pre-existing vertebral fractures. A blinded assessment of vertebral fractures based on Genant's criteria was conducted on the T5-L5 spine for rating on a severity scale. Grade 1 mild fractures were not linked to age in males, but increased with aging in females...

Methods: A systematic review/meta-analysis on vital primary teeth resulting from trauma or caries was conducted using GRADE to assess the certainty of evidence for clinical recommendations. A decision tree was provided for choosing VPTs. Results: No articles on trauma VPT were found.
