In order to obtain a real-time and correct test for body water equilibrium in hemodialysis patients, an instrument based on bioimpedance measurement has been developed. The hardware and software design of the instrument was introduced in this paper. The instrument is of safty and good duplicity. Preliminary clinical experiments shows that it can reflect the state of body water with relative high sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: The results and prognositic factors in treating locally recurrent soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of the extremities and trunk were identified. METHODS: The clinical, pathologic, and therapeutic characteristics of 96 STS patients were investigated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Seventy-six patients (79.2%) had high grade sarcoma and 20 patients (20.8%) had low grade sarcoma. Operative procedures were wide excision (surgical margin > or = 2 cm) in 66, local excision (surgical margin < 2 cm) in 6, and amputation in 24 patients...

Nonpeptide angiotensin II type 1-receptor antagonists, AT1 receptor antagonists, are newly developed and useful drugs for essential hypertension. In Japan, the efficacy and safty of losartan and candesartan cilexetil in patients with essential hypertension have been evaluated by the double-blind, parallel group-comparison study using enelaprol maleate as control drug. Both trials revealed that these drugs showed a hypotensive effect comparable to that of enalapril with a high safety since the adverse drug reaction of cough was recognized in very few patients...

Twenty-four patients with various cerebellopontine angle (CPA) disorders including hemifacial spasm (11 cases), trigeminal neuralgia (9 cases), glossopharyngeal neuralgia (2 cases) incapacitating vertigo and acoustic neuroma (one case each), were treated by endoscopic surgery, via the retrosigmoid approach. Because of the distal light and panoramic view, the endoscope provides an excellent view inside the CPA, allows clear identification of the vascular and nervous components, and is especially helpful in cases of trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm to find the location of cross-conflict...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

The purpose of the clinical study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Sulperazone (SPZ) (sulbactam/cefoperazone) comparited with tienam in the treatment of lower resperiatory tract infections. A total of 73 patients enrolled in the study. 61 patients were evaluated for efficacy (SPZ 31, TIM 30) and 63 patients were evaluated for safty (SPZ 31, TIM 32). Drugs were administered twice a day for 7-14 days, at a daily dose of either 2.0-4.0 g of sulperazone or 2.0-4.0 g tienam. The overall clinical efficacy rates of sulperazone and tienam were 93...

COMPARATIVE STUDY
A J Davies, R M Lockley, A Jones, M el-Safty, J C Clothier
Serum, bone and tissue levels of the three cephalosporins, cefamandole, cefuroxime and cephradine were determined in 60 patients given a single 1 g dose intravenously before total hip surgery and two similar doses at 8 h intervals. The levels achieved were comparable for all three antibiotics, hence the choice of prophylactic antibiotic for total hip replacement should be guided by the pathogens causing infection and cost of the antibiotic.
