In sustainable aquaculture systems, copper sulfate (CuSO4 ) is widely applied as a disinfectant to control parasitic infections and algal growth. However, aquatic organisms may suffer from exposure to excessive concentrations of Cu. Elevated Cu concentrations could activate damage to the respiratory functions of aquatic animals. Thus, this study explored the effects exerted by ferulic acid (FA) on respiratory metabolism, oxidation-related lesions, and the apoptosis parameters of the gills and red blood cells in copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4 ·5H2 O)-treated carp ( Cyprinus carpio var...

A physiological mechanism of programmed cell death called eryptosis occurs in aged or damaged red blood cells (RBCs). Dysregulated eryptosis contributes to abnormal microcirculation and prothrombotic risk. Cigarette smoke extract (CSE) induces a p38 MAPK-initiated, Fas-mediated eryptosis, activating the death-inducing signaling complex (DISC). Indicaxanthin (Ind) from cactus pear fruits, is a bioavailable dietary phytochemical in humans and it is able to incorporate into RBCs enhancing their defense against numerous stimuli...

The harmful effect of chemotherapeutic side effects has paid a way to discover a novel with curative way for skin cancer treatment. Skin cancer prevention is more viable with the use of combination of bioactive agents than using of single bioactive compounds. Present work was demonstrated to evaluate the interaction of Resveratrol (Res), Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), and diallyl trisulfide (DATS) with each other as a binary combination on A431 cells. Nuclear fragmentation analysis of combination of bioactive agents using DAPI analysis, detection of apoptosis, analysis of cell cycle, ROS assay, antimigration assays, and western blotting were implemented to study the combination of bioactive compounds on A431 cell line...

In order to investigate the amelioration of docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phosphatidylserine (DHA-PS) on bisphenol A (BPA)-induced nephrotoxicity, the murine nephrotoxicity model was established by intragastric administration of BPA (5 mg/kg/B.W.) for 6 weeks. The biochemical indices, hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining, kidney metabolomics, and related protein expression levels of SIRT1-AMPK pathway were then determined. Our results indicated that DHA-PS (100 mg/kg/B.W.) ameliorated the BPA-induced nephrotoxicity after 6 weeks of intragastric administration, primarily by decreasing the serum creatinine (CRE) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), renal inflammatory cytokines and lipid levels, and increasing the antioxidant enzyme activities...

Cattle are deemed less susceptible to mycotoxins due to the limited internal exposure resulting from rumen microbiota activity. However, the significant amounts of Fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN) frequently detected in bovine follicular fluid samples suggest that they could affect ovarian function. Both mycotoxins trigger several patterns of cell death and activate the NLRP3 inflammasome in the intestine. In vitro studies have reported a number of adverse effects on bovine oocytes...

Platelet mitochondrial dysfunction is crucial for platelet activation, atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Sulforaphane (SFN) is a dietary isothiocyanate enriched in cruciferous vegetables and possesses multiple health benefits including cardiovascular protection. This study aims to investigate whether and how SFN modulates platelet mitochondrial dysfunction and hyperactivity in vitro and in vivo . Using a series of platelet functional assays in human platelets in vitro , we found that SFN at physiological concentrations attenuated oxidative stress-dependent platelet mitochondrial dysfunction (loss of mitochondrial membrane potential), apoptosis (cytochrome c release, caspase 3 activation and phosphatidylserine exposure) and activation induced by glycoprotein VI (GPVI) agonists ( e...

The olfactory mucosa (OM) and olfactory bulb (OB) are neuronal tissues that contribute to the early processing of olfactory information. They contain significant amounts of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are crucial for neuronal tissue development. In this study, we evaluated the impact of feeding mice diets that are either deficient in α-linolenic acid (ALA) or supplemented with n-3 long-chain PUFAs from gestation to adolescence on the phospholipid and ganglioside composition of these tissues...

Cell death program of red blood cells (RBCs), called eryptosis, is characterized by activation of caspases and scrambling of membrane phospholipids with externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS). Excessive eryptosis confers a procoagulant phenotype and is implicated in impairment of microcirculation and increased prothrombotic risk. It has recently been reported that cigarette smokers have high levels of circulating eryptotic erythrocytes, and a possible contribution of eryptosis to the vaso-occlusive complications associated to cigarette smoke has been postulated...

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) encompasses a spectrum of pathologies, ranging from steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The factors promoting the progression of steatosis to NASH are still unclear. Recent studies suggest that mitochondrial lipid composition is critical in NASH development. Here, we showed that CDP-DAG synthase 2 (Cds2) was downregulated in genetic or diet-induced NAFLD mouse models. Liver-specific deficiency of Cds2 provoked hepatic steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis in five-week-old mice...
