Bacterial pericarditis is a rapidly progressive and highly fatal infection, and is often diagnosed postmortem in half of the cases. Even with drainage and antibiotics, the mortality rate is high. Gram-positive cocci, specifically Streptococcus penumoniae, have been the most common cause of bacterial pericarditis with a preceding primary site of infection. Following the introduction of antibiotics in the 1940s and more recently the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, the incidence has drastically decreased. We describe an extremely rare case of primary streptococcus pneumoniae purulent pericarditis that presented with cardiac tamponade...

BACKGROUND: Studies on pulse oximetry screening for neonatal sepsis and respiratory disease in a middle-income country are lacking. Newborn screening for critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) using pulse oximetry is an effective and life-saving strategy in developed countries. While most studies have reported false-positive results during CCHD screening, they have not elaborated on the detected disease types. We studied the effectiveness and outcomes of pulse oximetry newborn screening for non-cardiac hypoxemic diseases such as neonatal sepsis, respiratory diseases, and CCHD in a middle-income country...

Successful vaccination policies for protection from invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) dependent on determination of the exact serotype distribution in each country. We aimed to identify serotypes of pneumococcal strains causing IPD in children in Turkey and emphasize the change in the serotypes before and after vaccination with 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) was included and PCV-13 was newly changed in Turkish National Immunization Program. Streptococcus pneumoniae strains were isolated at 22 different hospitals of Turkey, which provide healthcare services to approximately 65% of the Turkish population...

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 27 October 2012 and 22 January 2013, twenty-five isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae collected from 5 patients were identified with MIC of meropenem ≥ 32 mg/L and MIC of ertapenem ≥ 4 mg/L in screening tests. Next, all isolates were assessed with the modified Hodge test, combined disk test with EDTA, double disk synergy test with EDTA and MBL E-test...

INTRODUCTION: Complications caused by lost gallstones within the abdominal cavity are well known. Abscesses, perforation of the gastro-intestinal tract were all described in the literature, but gallstones were found in hernial sac, or even in sputum after it penetrated through the diaphragm into the respiratory tract. These complications can develop between several weeks to several years postoperatively. Most complications can be treated surgically only. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty gallstones and bile samples were collected from 50 patients who underwent cholecystectomy (36 female / 14 male, avarge age: 60...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the local epidemiology of Klebsiella penumoniae carrying bla(CTX-M-15) in southern China and to characterize the genetic environment of bla(CTX-M-15). METHODS: PCR and DNA sequencing were used to detect and characterize the genetic contexts of bla(CTX-M-15). The clonal relatedness of isolates carrying bla(CTX-M-15) was determined by pulse-field gel electrophoresis. Conjugative plasmids carrying bla(CTX-M-15) were obtained by mating and were further subject to restriction analysis and replicon typing...

A 69-year-old gentleman with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (stage I), with baseline fibrotic lung changes on CT, received six cycles of R-PMitCebo chemotherapy containing bleomycin. Three months later he presented to the Accident and Emergency Department with progressive dyspnoea, dry cough, pyrexia and generalised lethargy. Chest radiographs showed bilateral lower zone opacities. Clinically, all signs initially pointed to community-acquired penumonia, but he failed to respond to standard treatment for this. Repeat high-resolution CT (HRCT) subsequently showed widespread peripheral interstitial changes consistent with marked fibrotic lung changes...

Streptococcus penumoniae is a major human pathogen responsible for respiratory tract infections, septicemia, and meningitis and continues to produce numerous cases of disease with relatively high mortalities. S. pneumoniae encodes up to three sialidases, NanA, NanB, and NanC, that have been implicated in pathogenesis and are potential drug targets. NanA has been shown to be a promiscuous sialidase, hydrolyzing the removal of Neu5Ac from a variety of glycoconjugates with retention of configuration at the anomeric center, as we confirm by NMR...

An efficient electrochemical method for the preparation of 2-amino-5-substituted-1,3,4-oxadiazoles (4a-k) at platinum anode through the electrooxidation of semicarbazone (3a-k) at controlled potential electrolysis has been reported in the present study. The electrolysis was carried out in the acetic acid solvent and lithium perchlorate was used as supporting electrolyte. The products were characterized by IR,(1)H-NMR,(13)C-NMR, mass spectra and elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro growth inhibiting activity against different strains of bacteria viz...

Patients infected with bacteria producing extendedspectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) are at higher risk of mortality and morbidity. Several mutations in genes encoding SHV, tem and CTX-M beta-lactamases have been associated with ESBL activity. This paper describes a new SHV mutation in ESBL-producing strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated in Kuwait. The study included 13 K. penumoniae strains isolated from patients admitted to the Amiri hospital of Kuwait. The production of ESBL in all strains was confirmed by Vitek system and E-test...

About 50 per cent of the stock was affected locally with Bact. lepisepticum "snuffles." 3. "Snuffles" and mortality rates showed spring and fall rises and low points during the summer. 4.
