DNA is widely used as building block material for the construction of polyhedral nanostructures. DNA polyhedrons (DNA prism, cube, and square pyramid) are small 3D wireframed nanostructures with tunable shapes and sizes. Despite substantial progress in synthesis, the study regarding cellular responses to DNA polyhedrons is limited. Herein, the molecular interaction between DNA polyhedrons and the antioxidant enzyme, catalase has been explored. The enzymatic activity of bovine liver catalase (BLC) remains unaltered in the presence of DNA polyhedrons after 1 h of incubation...

This article presents a terahertz (THz) fast line-scanning imaging system with three-dimensional (3-D) focus-steering capability operating at 0.1 THz. The system comprises a 3-D printed rotating multi-prism plate and a dual-device structure consisting of a negative ridge pyramid and a column ridge pyramid. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the system generates a sheet-shaped diffraction-free beam with a projection distance of approximately 175 mm and a diffraction-free distance of approximately 200 mm...

A chemical reaction between Sb and N2 was induced under high-pressure (32-35 GPa) and high-temperature (1600-2200 K) conditions, generated by a laser heated diamond anvil cell. The reaction product was identified by single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction at 35 GPa and room temperature as crystalline antimony nitride with Sb3N5 stoichiometry and structure belonging to orthorhombic space group Cmc21. Only Sb-N bonds are present in the covalent bonding framework, with two types of Sb atoms respectively forming SbN6 distorted octahedra and trigonal prisms and three types of N atoms forming NSb4 distorted tetrahedra and NSb3 trigonal pyramids...

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are biomolecules that can bind to ice and hinder its growth, thus holding significant potential for biotechnological and biomedical applications. AFPs are a subset of ice-binding proteins (IBPs) and are found in various organisms across different life kingdoms. This mini-review investigates the underlying mechanisms by which AFPs impede ice growth, emphasizing the disparities between hyperactive and moderate AFPs. Hyperactive AFPs exhibit heightened thermal hysteresis (TH) activity and can bind to both the basal and prism planes of ice crystals, enabling them to endure extremely cold temperatures...

What we believe to be a new electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) configuration is being developed for simultaneous three-dimensional deformation measurements. In this ESPI system, two pairs of symmetrical illuminating arrangement with dual-wavelength lights were used to independently sense two in-plane deformation components, one Michelson interferometer-based set illuminating with the other wavelength light was utilized to measure out-of-plane deformation. The color speckle interferogram was split into four sub-patterns by a prism, three of them were filtered by three different bandpass dichroic filters and recorded by one monochrome camera...

Coiled-coil protein origami (CCPO) is a rationally designed de novo protein fold, constructed by concatenating coiled-coil forming segments into a polypeptide chain, that folds into polyhedral nano-cages. To date, nanocages in the shape of a tetrahedron, square pyramid, trigonal prism, and trigonal bipyramid have been successfully designed and extensively characterized following the design principles of CCPO. These designed protein scaffolds and their favorable biophysical properties are suitable for functionalization and other various biotechnological applications...

The crystal shape is controllable and varies from long and pyramid-tipped prisms to thin hexagonal plate. The highly uniform truncated crystals have extremely high compression and bending strengths after hydration molding.

Owing to the advantages of cost-effectiveness, compactness, and the avoidance of complicated camera synchronization, single-camera three-dimensional (3D) digital image correlation (DIC) techniques have gained increasing attention for deformation measurement of materials and structures. In the traditional single-camera 3D-DIC system, the left and right view images can be recorded by a single camera using diffraction grating, a bi-prism, or a set of planar mirrors. To further improve the measurement accuracy of single-camera 3D-DIC, this paper introduces a single-camera four-view imaging technique by installing a pyramidal prism in front of the camera...

A multistep general synthetic strategy towards polytopic carboranyl-containing (semi)clathrochelate metal complexes, based on the template synthesis, transmetallation, amide condensation and 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions, is developed. Their mono(semi)clathrochelate precursors with a single reactive group were obtained using a transmetallation of the triethylantimony-capped macrobicyclic precursor. The thus obtained carboxyl-terminated iron(II) semiclathrochelate underwent a macrobicyclization with zirconium(IV) phthalocyaninate to form the corresponding phthalocyaninatoclathrochelate...

Vanadium at low doses has been observed to improve learning and memory abilities in neurological disorders but it is uncertain whether such protection will be provided in hydrocephalus. High compliance and muscle-alike soft robotic grippers have shown promising performance in addressing the challenges in traditional rigid grippers. Nevertheless, a lack of control feedback (gasping speed and contact force) in a grasping operation can result in undetectable slipping and false positioning. In this study, a pneumatically driven and self-powered soft robotic gripper that can recognize the grabbed object is reported. We integrated pressure (P-TENG) and bend (B-TENG) triboelectric sensors into a soft robotic gripper to transduce the features of gripped objects in a pick-and-place operation...

In the case of six-atom structures we usually employ the hexagon, the pentagonal pyramid, the trigonal prism and the octahedron. More often than not, however, real world structures deviate from those ideal geometries, and we try to cope with non-ideality by adding adjectives such as distorted , twisted , puckered or flattened , additionally nuanced by adverbs such as slightly , significantly or severely ...

We present a numerical study of the structured light produced by a laser beam transmitted by a symmetric pyramidal prism. From the Fresnel diffraction formulation, we obtain expressions for the amplitudes valid for an arbitrary number of prism faces, and for both acute and flat-topped prisms. The expressions are readily evaluated numerically and are a significant advancement over the restrictive plane wave models used in prior work. We consider applications in optical trapping and give examples in which the intensity distributions contain a number of bright spots having similar power, as is suitable for the simultaneous trapping of several particles...

Coiled-coil (CC) dimers are widely used in protein design because of their modularity and well-understood sequence-structure relationship. In CC protein origami design, a polypeptide chain is assembled from a defined sequence of CC building segments that determine the self-assembly of protein cages into polyhedral shapes, such as the tetrahedron, triangular prism, or four-sided pyramid. However, a targeted functionalization of the CC modules could significantly expand the versatility of protein origami scaffolds...
