Pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) is a new modality that increases the detection of harmonic echoes and myocardial contrast by cancelling linearly transmitted signals. We tested whether PIHI improved the detection of endocardial borders in noncontrast 2-dimensional echocardiography. We compared PIHI with tissue harmonic imaging (THI), which decreases linearly transmitted signals using filters. Fundamental mode (FM) was compared with THI and PIHI in 50 consecutive patients. The global and segmental endocardial visualization scores measured with FM were significantly improved by using either THI or PIHI...

The purpose of this study was to determine if pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) can characterize liver hemangiomas. We retrospectively evaluated 39 consecutive patients with liver hemangiomas, 20 typical on conventional US (hyperechoic, homogeneous, or slightly inhomogeneous and with sharp margins) and 19 atypical (11 inhomogeneous with different echogenicity larger than 3 cm, 6 hypoechoic, and 2 isoechoic smaller than 3 cm). Each liver hemangioma was firstly evaluated by PIHI and then confirmed by dynamic helical CT (28 patients) or by 6 months of US follow-up (11 patients)...

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the feasibility of recent contrast-specific ultrasound techniques in depicting vascular flow and the effects of changing the output power of the transducer and insonation mode on contrast enhancement, the authors performed an experimental study with a flow phantom. METHODS: While changing the mechanical index and the sound insonation mode (continuous and intermittent), images were obtained with three contrast-enhanced ultrasound techniques: fundamental, second-harmonic, and pulse-inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) after a bolus injection of microbubble contrast agent...

To investigate the feasibility of delayed pulse-inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) with the SH U 508A to improve imaging of hepatic metastases, we evaluated 20 patients with known hepatic metastases. Conventional ultrasound (US) was performed before administration, and PIHI was performed 5 min after a bolus injection of 4 G of microbubble contrast agent (300 mg/mL of SH U 508A). Intense, homogeneous enhancement in the liver parenchyma was seen in all patients on delayed PIHI. In 10 patients (50%), 1 or more focal liver lesions that were not seen on unenhanced imaging were detected on delayed PIHI...

The aim of this study was to evaluate capabilities of pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) in characterization of unifocal liver lesions. We evaluated with PIHI (HDI5000, ATL, Bothell, Wash.) and spiral CT 46 consecutive patients with a single liver lesion identified by fundamental US [7 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), 2 cholangiocarcinomas, 7 focal nodular hyperplasias (FNH), 17 hemangiomas and 13 metastases]. The PIHI was performed before and 30 s, 2 and 4 min after bolus administration of Levovist (2...

The aim of this study is to evaluate capability of contrast enhanced ultrasonography (US) using pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) to detect liver metastases in comparison to fundamental B-mode ultrasound and spiral CT. Thirty-six consecutive patients with known malignancies and sonographically proved or suspicious liver metastases have been examined with fundamental B-mode US, with PIHI 2', 4' and 6' after Levovist injection and with four phase spiral-CT. Presence, conspicuity and number of lesions have been evaluated comparing PIHI with fundamental B-mode US and spiral-CT...

The antiproliferative activity of a styrylpyrone derivative (SPD) plant extract, was studied in three different human breast cancer cell lines in culture, and was compared with tamoxifen. The number of living cells was evaluated by Methylene Blue staining technique. SPD showed strong antiproliferative activity in estrogen receptor (ER) and progestin receptor (PgR) positive MCF-7 cells (EC50 = 6.30 x 10(-7) M) and receptor-negative MDA-MB-231 (EC50 = 5.62 x 10(-7) M), but it partially inhibited the high progestin receptor positive T47D cells (EC50 = 1...

Of the twenty microorganisms screened for metabolism of goniothalamin only Streptomyces aurofaciens ATCC 10762 and Nocardia species NRRL 5646 produced two metabolites, 3,4-dihydrogoniothalamin and 3,4,7,8 tetrahydrogoniothalamin. The identity of the isolated metabolites were established using TLC, HPLC, MS, IR, and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the substrate had been transformed into two unknown metabolites by Aspergillus niger ATCC 11394 and Septomyxa affinis ATCC 6737 in low yield. Three of the metabolites were also detected and identified in the urine and blood samples of the goniothalamin-treated Sprague-Dawley rats...

The results of pre-operative staining of fine needle aspirate (FNA) samples from 48 breast cancers, with a polyclonal antibody raised against highly purified oestrogen receptor (ER) protein, have been compared with our standard biochemical method for measurement of cytosol and nuclear ER. FNA antibody staining correctly predicted the presence of ER in 20 of 21 ERC +/N+ tumours. There were 2 false positive results in 24 ER C-/N-tumours though both these tumours showed marked heterogeneity of staining. Three ER C+/N- tumours were negative by antibody staining, in keeping with the tendency for such tumours to be hormone independent in behaviour...
