Wastewater monitoring may be a valuable early surveillance tool for studying mpox virus (MPXV) circulation in China, a country with high population density and very few mpox patients. To evaluate the effectiveness of wastewater monitoring for MPXV in detecting local hidden transmission of the epidemic in the early period, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention initiated a wastewater monitoring program for MPXV in China in July 2023. To enhance the monitoring sensitivity of the program, an MPXV monitoring point was established in a gathering place of high-risk mpox population...

Microplastic (MP) residues in marine have become an increasingly serious environmental pollution issue, and in recent years the detection of MPs in marine started to attract worldwide research interests. Optical-fiber-based environmental sensors have been extensively employed for their several merits such as high sensitivity, pressure resistance, compactness and ease of constructing communication networks. However, fiber-optic refractive index sensors are not specifically developed for distinguishing MPs from other inorganic particles suspended in water...

Metal-functionalized porphyrin-like graphene structures are promising electrocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR) as their metal centers can modulate activity. Yet, the role of metal center of metalloporphyrins (MTPPs) in CO2 reaction activity is still lacking deep understanding. Here, CO2 RR mechanism on MTPPs with five different metal centers (M = Fe, Co, Cu, Zn and Ni) are examined by first-principles calculations. The *COOH formation is the rate determined step on the five MTPP structures, and the CoTPP exhibits the best CO2 RR activity while ZnTPP and NiTPP are the worst, which is also verified by our experiment...

A visible-light-driven photocatalytic protocol is established for the diastereoselective synthesis of pyrrolo[3,2,1- jk ]carbazoles via a radical-triggered multicomponent bicyclization reaction starting from readily available indole-tethered 1,6-enynes and α-benzyl-α-bromomalonates under mild conditions. This photocatalytic approach exhibits a wide substrate compatibility and excellent tolerability toward various functional groups and boasts the benefit of efficient ring formation and chemical bond creation...

A highly convenient copper(I)-catalyzed oxidation-initiated cyclopropanation of indolyl ynamide for the rapid construction of indole-fused cyclopropane-lactams is described, which represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first non-noble-metal-catalyzed indolyl ynamide oxidation/dearomatization by the in situ generated α-oxo copper carbenes. Compared to hydrazone and diazo, the use of alkynes as carbene precursors allows cyclopropanation to occur under a safe and convenient pathway. Moreover, this transformation can lead to the divergent synthesis of pentacyclic spiroindolines involving the reversal of ynamide regioselectivity by engineering substrate structures...

BACKGROUND: Extensive hepatocyte mortality and the absence of specific medical therapy significantly contribute to the unfavorable prognosis of acute liver failure (ALF). Ferroptosis is a crucial form of cell death involved in ALF. In this study, we aimed to determine the impact of Mediator complex subunit 1 (Med1) on ferroptosis and its potential hepatoprotective effects in ALF. RESULTS: Med1 expression is diminished in the liver of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-induced ALF mice, as well as in hepatocytes damaged by H2 O2 or TNF-α/D-GalN in vitro...

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a serum glycoprotein, is expressed during embryonic development and the pathogenesis of liver cancer. It serves as a clinical tumor marker, function as a carcinogen, immune suppressor, and transport vehicle; but the detailed AFP structural information has not yet been reported. In this study, we used single-particle cryo-electron microscopy(cryo-EM) to analyze the structure of the recombinant AFP obtained a 3.31 Å cryo-EM structure and built an atomic model of AFP. We observed and identified certain structural features of AFP, including N-glycosylation at Asn251, four natural fatty acids bound to distinct domains, and the coordination of metal ions by residues His22, His264, His268, and Asp280...

Diabetes-related skin ulcers are of significant clinical concern. Although conventional dressings have been developed, their outcomes have not been adequate, indicating the need to investigate functional dressings for the treatment of diabetic ulcers. Copper selenide nanoparticles (Cu2 Se NPs) demonstrate outstanding photoresponsiveness, which is critical to the healing process. However, their limited solubility in water restricts their application. To synthesize the ODT-PMMA@Cu2 Se NP-doped decellularized periosteum‑sodium alginate functional dressing-ODT-PMMA@Cu2 Se/ECM-S (OP@Cu2 Se/ECM-S), Cu2 Se NPs were modified by n-octadecanethiol (ODT) end-functionalized poly (methacrylic acid) (PMAA) ligands homogeneously dispersed in a decellularized periosteum/sodium alginate matrix...

Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) in younger women (under 40) manifests as irregular periods, high follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and low estradiol (E2), often triggered by chemotherapy. Though mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy shows promise in treating POI, its exact mechanism remains unclear. This study reveals that human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) can protect ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) from cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced ferroptosis, a form of cell death driven by iron accumulation...

Orbital hybridization to regulate the electronic structures and surface chemisorption properties of transition metals is of great importance for boosting the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, we developed a core-shell rambutan-like nanocarbon catalyst (FeAl-RNC) with atomically dispersed Fe-Al atom pairs from metal-organic framework (MOF) material. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the strong p-d orbital hybridization between Al and Fe results in an asymmetric electron distribution with moderate adsorption strength of oxygen intermediates, rendering enhanced intrinsic ORR activity...

The emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants continues to cause challenging problems for the effective control of COVID-19. In this study, we tested the hypothesis of whether a strategy of multivalent and sequential heterologous spike protein vaccinations would induce a broader range and higher levels of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 variants and more effective protection than homologous spike protein vaccination in a mouse model. We determined spike-specific IgG, receptor-binding inhibition titers, and protective efficacy in the groups of mice that were vaccinated with multivalent recombinant spike proteins (Wuhan, Delta, Omicron), sequentially with heterologous spike protein variants, or with homologous spike proteins...

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have important applications in different industries; however, they are environmentally unfriendly due to their high global warming potential (GWP). Hence, reclamation of used hydrofluorocarbons via energy-efficient adsorption-based separation will greatly contribute to reducing their impact on the environment. In particular, the separation of azeotropic refrigerants remains challenging, such as typical mixtures of CH2 F2 (HFC-23) and CHF3 (HFC-32), due to a lack of adsorptive mechanisms...
