Touch sensation from the glabrous skin of the hand is essential for precisely controlling dexterous movements, yet the neural mechanisms by which tactile inputs influence motor circuits remain largely unexplored. By pairing air-puff tactile stimulation on the hand's glabrous skin with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the primary motor cortex (M1), we examined the effects of tactile stimuli from single or multiple fingers on corticospinal excitability and M1's intracortical circuits. Our results showed that when we targeted the hand's first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle with TMS, homotopic (index finger) tactile stimulation, regardless of its point (fingertip or base), reduced corticospinal excitability...

The dorsal spinal cord is crucial for the transmission and modulation of multiple somatosensory modalities, such as itch, pain, and touch. Despite being essential for the well-being and survival of an individual, itch and pain, in their chronic forms, have increasingly been recognized as clinical problems. Although considerable progress has been made in our understanding of the neurochemical processing of nociceptive and chemical itch sensations, the neural substrate that is crucial for mechanical itch processing is still unclear...

In 1980, Hanifin and Rajka (1) proposed major and minor diagnostic criteria for atopic dermatitis (AD). Major associations included pruritus, dry skin, and history of atopy. One minor feature included Dennie-Morgan Folds (DMFs), which manifest as secondary creases in the skin underneath the inferior eyelid, usually found in infants (2). In an attempt to refine these criteria, a study evaluating 210 patients with an existing AD diagnosis observed DMF in 84% of AD cases. A pediatric study in Bijapur, India on 174 children under 16 years of age with AD identified DMF to be the most prevalent minor criterion...

We conducted a systematic review investigating the influence of visual perspective and body ownership (BO) on vicarious brain resonance and vicarious sensations during the observation of pain and touch. Indeed, the way in which brain reactivity and the phenomenological experience can be modulated by blurring the bodily boundaries of self-other distinction is still unclear. We screened Scopus and WebOfScience, and identified 31 articles, published from 2000 to 2022. Results show that assuming an egocentric perspective enhances vicarious resonance and vicarious sensations...

Psychiatry has often had an uneasy relationship with popular culture as depictions of mental health may be stigmatising and inaccurate. A recent critically acclaimed series, Top Boy, set in a crime-filled fictional housing estate in the London Borough of Hackney offers an informed and fairly balanced insight into broad mental health-related themes including racial trauma embodied in social inequities, the syndemic of mental disorder, substance misuse and gang-based crime as well as the psychosocial ramifications of illustrated mental health conditions...

BACKGROUND: By 2022, the Government of Indonesia had successfully eliminated malaria in 389 out of 514 districts but continues to face a challenge in Eastern Indonesia where 95% of the total 2021 malaria cases were reported from Papua, West Papua and Nusa Tenggara Timur provinces. There is an increased recognition that malaria elimination will require a better understanding of the human behavioural factors hindering malaria prevention and treatment, informed by local context and local practice...

In this pre-registered study, we evaluated the effects of a single-session, self-guided intervention, leveraging daily micropractice (≤20 seconds/day practice) of self-compassionate touch to enhance self-compassion. We randomly assigned undergraduates (N = 135) to one of two conditions: a single-session intervention in which they were taught self-compassionate touch or a finger-tapping active control. Then, we instructed them to practice for 20 seconds/day for one month. At baseline (T1) and one-month follow-up (T2), participants completed assessments of self-compassion, growth mindset, positive affect, stress, psychopathology, habit formation, and more...

Latent fingerprints on plastic substrates can be visualized by using sequential treatments to enhance the contrast between the fingerprint residues and underlying substrate; however, the extent to which these processes affect subsequent DNA analysis is mostly unknown. Latent fingerprints deposited on black plastic by one donor were visualized with single-process fingerprint powders (i.e., white powder, bichromatic powder, or bichromatic magnetic powder) or sequential treatments (i.e., laser → reflected ultraviolet imaging system (RUVIS) → CA fuming → RUVIS → Rhodamine 6G, Ardrox, and MBD (RAM) or CA fuming → RAM/laser → bichromatic magnetic powder)...

Refugee decisions to vaccinate for COVID-19 are a complex interplay of factors which include individual perceptions, access barriers, trust, and COVID-19 specific factors, which contribute to lower vaccine uptake. To address this, the WHO calls for localized solutions to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake for refugees and evidence to inform future vaccination efforts. However, limited evidence engages directly with refugees about their experiences with COVID-19 vaccinations. To address this gap, researchers conducted qualitative interviews (N = 61) with refugees (n = 45), sponsors of refugees (n = 3), and key informants (n = 13) connected to local COVID-19 vaccination efforts for refugees in Calgary...

However, for special user groups living in long-term care facilities, such as people with dementia, the applications of these haptic devices are not apparent. The aim of this study is to understand how haptic devices can be used in intramural care facilities in times of social isolation, focusing on haptic devices that utilize haptic sensation...

Haptic feedback is a method to provide tactile guidance in scenarios requiring multiple senses and divided attention like aviation. Earlier tests on a flight simulator and an in-flight test using the proposed tactile guidance method have shown the need to study its learning process. In this study, twelve participants completed two tactile guidance tasks without visual feedback across twelve sessions to analyze the learning effect. The paper shows an improvement between sessions in guidance accuracy, response time, and self-assessed workload...

Touch sensation is primarily encoded by mechanoreceptors, called low-threshold mechanoreceptors (LTMRs), with their cell bodies in the dorsal root ganglia. Because of their great diversity in terms of molecular signature, terminal endings morphology, and electrophysiological properties, mirroring the complexity of tactile experience, LTMRs are a model of choice to study the molecular cues differentially controlling neuronal diversification. While the transcriptional codes that define different LTMR subtypes have been extensively studied, the molecular players that participate in their late maturation and in particular in the striking diversity of their end-organ morphological specialization are largely unknown...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms, and it is associated with several prodromal non-motor symptoms, including an impaired sense of smell, taste and touch. We previously reported that bitter taste impairments occur independently of olfactory impairments in an early-stage PD animal model using short-term intranasal rotenone-treated mice. Cool temperatures also affect bitter taste perception, but it remains unclear whether or not bitter taste impairments result from an altered sensitivity for intraoral cool stimuli...

INTRODUCTION: Women with perinatal anxiety have reduced coping capacity during labor, which affects labor progress and increases the likelihood of a cesarean section. Several non-pharmacological interventions for anxiety during childbirth are available.
