INTRODUCTION: Sexual activity is composed of different phases (excitation, plateau, resolution). Each phase is associated with cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular and hormonal modification which can have an influence on the nervous system. This impact has been studied many times in literature, but no study has synthetized the complications related to coitus or orgasm. METHOD: Systematic review of literature on neurological complications, except headache, of coitus based on Medline and Embase...

Maternal death from haemorrhage is decreasing: in the last 15 years the number of deaths has been halved. This improvement demonstrates the progress made in hemorrhage management as a result of collective efforts. The number of deaths in this triennium is 22, representing 8.4% of maternal deaths and a maternal mortality ratio by haemorrhage of 1.0/100,000 live births. Nevertheless, there is a worrying proportion of deaths from occult haemorrhage. These occult haemorrhages most often occurred after caesarean sections...

Amniotic fluid embolism remains the 3rd cause of maternal death in France, with a stable rate and 28 deaths in this triennium, representing 10.7% of maternal deaths and a maternal mortality ratio of 1.2/100 000 live births. Cases are characterized by the suddenness of symptoms : the median delay between symptoms and death was 4 hours [0.75-696] with 20/28 patients did not reach the intensive care unit. Initial circulatory failure or cataclysmic haemorrhage were the two modes of presentation. Prodromes were reported in 17 (63%) cases and induction of labour was present in 12/27 (44%)...

INTRODUCTION: During cardiac surgery-associated bleeding, the early detection of coagulopathy is crucial. However, owing to time constraints or lack of suitable laboratory tests, transfusion of haemostatic products is often inappropriately triggered, either too late (exposing to prolonged bleeding and thus to avoidable administration of blood products) or blindly to the coagulation status (exposing to unnecessary haemostatic products administration in patients with no coagulopathy). Undue exposition to transfusion risks and additional healthcare costs may arise...

Massive hemorrhage remains the main cause of preventable death in combat settings and is also the main cause of year loss in developing countries. The management of these patients relies on blood transfusion and surgery. Time is a key factor, related to survival. Recent events highlight the need to be more efficient in the transfusion supply during terror attacks or mass casualties in civilian settings. Blood components therapy with a 1:1:1 ratio is associated with a decrease of mortality but encounters many logistic issues in those circumstances...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the mortality and re-bleeding rates, and the risk factors involved, in a cohort of patients with previous diverticular bleeding (DB). METHODS: In 2007, data on 2462 patients with lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding were collected prospectively at several French hospitals. We studied the follow-up of patients with DB retrospectively. The following data were collected: age, mortality rates and re-bleeding rates, drug intake, surgery and comorbidities...

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing of initiating low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in patients who have undergone nonoperative management (NOM) of blunt solid organ injuries (SOIs) remains controversial. We describe the safety of early initiation of chemical venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis among patients undergoing NOM of blunt SOIs. METHODS: We retrospectively studied severely injured adults who sustained blunt SOI without significant intracranial hemorrhage and underwent an initial NOM at a Canadian lead trauma hospital between 2010 and 2014...

We describe a case of uterine necrosis, following Gelitaspon(®) embolization for postpartum hemorrhage resulting from vaginal laceration. Previous cases published help to improve the safety of this effective method by showing the risk factors, as particles sizes, ultraselective embolization, prevention of infection. Controlling bleeding by surgery is the priority when hemorragy is due to laceration without uterin atony. In case of failure, embolization is an option which should be proposed without delay. Uterine necrosis should be suspected in case of postembolization septic syndrome...

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: The mortality rate from upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) remains high, at 5 % - 10 %. The aim of the current study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics, prognostic factors, and actual practice in a cohort of patients with UGIB admitted to French general hospitals. METHODS: From March 2005 to February 2006, a prospective multicenter study was conducted at 53 French hospitals. A total of 3298 patients admitted for UGIB were enrolled consecutively...

Thrombin a key modulator of the complex process involved in coronary obstruction during acute ST-segment elevation myocardial is infarction. A correct and complete thrombin inhibition has to be achieved early in this setting and is complementary with fast and potent antiplatelet treatment. Bivalirudin, a direct thrombin inhibitor, has clearly shown to be an effective tool for acute coronary syndromes managed invasively, contemporarily causing fewer hemorragies. However, its efficacy has been questioned, mostly in cases of inadequate platelet inhibition and during primary PCI if compared with therapy with heparin and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors due to an increase in acute stent thrombosis...

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFWRS) is an acute infectious disease with abrupt onset, high fever, renal failure and frequent hemorragies. HFWRS during the pregnancy has relatively low occurrence, with only few described cases mostly in the region of the former Soviet Union. Although, according to the data from the literature, the disease is less severe during the pregnancy, the eclampsy, stillbirth and fetal infection were also described. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During the summer period, June-September 2002 in the area of northeast Montenegro, and mainly among people whose job was connected with rural areas, the HFRS was observed more frequently...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Upper-gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in the elderly is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The aims of this study were to determine the prognostic factors of UGIB in a large cohort of elders. Complications linked to drug absorption are most frequently observed in the case of treatment by vitamin K antagonist (VKA), whereas 1% of the French population is treated by VKA. Despite official recommendations renewal, these complications are not decreasing. The experience of anticoagulation clinics (AC) in other countries proves their efficiency in the reduction of two-thirds of hemorragies and thrombotic recurrences. The concept of AC strictly obliged to associate therapeutic education to the patient and the calculation of the treatment dosage...

Histologically the mass was charaterized by thick fibrous capsula, with areas of moderate cellularity alternated to areas of sclerosis, spots of hemorragies and infartual necrosis, spindle-shaped cells within collagen bundles that did not present mitotic activity or atipies and showed a low proliferation index with Ki 67 and histochemical positivity for CD 34 and negativity for C-Kit, anti-smooth cell and S100 antigen...
