With the advent of toroidal and double-stage diamond anvil cells (DACs), pressures between 4 and 10 Mbar can be achieved under static compression, however, the ability to explore diverse sample assemblies is limited on these micron-scale anvils. Adapting the toroidal DAC to support larger sample volumes offers expanded capabilities in physics, chemistry, and planetary science: including, characterizing materials in soft pressure media to multi-megabar pressures, synthesizing novel phases, and probing planetary assemblages at the interior pressures and temperatures of super-Earths and sub-Neptunes...

Coldwater species are challenged with increasing water temperatures and fluctuations over their upper thermal limits. This study evaluated the potential of acclimation to higher temperature and dietary antioxidants capacity to mitigate the adverse effects of heat shocks in rainbow trout. To this end, rainbow trout fingerlings were acclimated at optimal (14 °C) and high (20 °C) temperatures and fed on selenium (5 mg/kg) and polyphenol (2 g/kg) supplemented diets for 60 days and then were exposed to heat shocks by increasing water temperature up to 30 °C...

Immune checkpoint inhibition targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway has become a powerful clinical strategy for treating cancer, but its efficacy is complicated by various resistance mechanisms. One of the reasons for the resistance is the internalization and recycling of PD-L1 itself upon antibody binding. The inhibition of lysosome-mediated degradation of PD-L1 is critical for preserving the amount of PD-L1 recycling back to the cell membrane. In this study, we find that Hsc70 promotes PD-L1 degradation through the endosome-lysosome pathway and reduces PD-L1 recycling to the cell membrane...

Cryopreservation of rainbow trout semen under field conditions was analyzed. Straw location over liquid nitrogen level is a crucial variable that affects freezing rate and fertilization yield due to changes in nitrogen vapor external temperature. The objectives were: to analyze cryopreservation protocols by experimentally measuring the cooling rates and fertilization yield of 0.5ml plastic straws located in nitrogen vapor at different heights corresponding to different external temperatures; to numerically simulate the freezing process, by solving the heat transfer partial differential equations with the corresponding thermo-physical properties of the biological system and the plastic straw; to evaluate and analyze the surface heat transfer coefficient (h) during the freezing process of the straws; to introduce a new variable, the characteristic freezing time (tc), that enables comparison between protocols; this variable was defined as the elapsed period between the initial freezing temperature and a final reference temperature of -40ºC (temperature in which more than 80% of the water is in a frozen state)...

Few studies have explored the influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on the heat vulnerability of mental health (MH) patients. As individual socioeconomic data was unavailable, we aimed to fill this gap by using the healthcare system type as a proxy for SES. Brazilian national statistics indicate that public patients have lower SES than private. Therefore, we compared the risk of emergency department visits (EDVs) for MH between patients from both healthcare types. EDVs for MH disorders from all nine public (101,452 visits) and one large private facility (154,954) in Curitiba were assessed (2017-2021)...

Urban parks play a key role in UHI mitigation. However, the role of other prominent types of urban green infrastructure has not been comprehensively studied. Thus, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the role of cemeteries and allotments as cooling islands compared to the well-studied park areas. We assessed the LST of cemeteries, allotments and parks based on Landsat 8 TM images across the five largest German cities during summertime. Random forest regressions explain the LST spatial variability of the different urban green spaces (UGS) with spectral indices (NDVI, NDMI, NDBaI) as well as with tree characteristics (tree type, tree age, trunk circumferences, trunk height or canopy density)...

This research investigated the effect of ultrasound-assisted first-stage thermal treatment (UATT) on the physicochemical properties of unwashed Silver Carp surimi gel, and the enhancement mechanism. UATT could reduce protein particle size, which significantly reduced from 142.22 μm to 106.70 μm after 30 min of UATT compared with the nature protein. This phenomenon can promote the protein crosslinking, resulting in the hardness of surimi gel increased by 15...

The traditional clinical approaches for oral cancer consist of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and so on. However, these treatments often induce side effects and exhibit limited efficacy. Photothermal therapy (PTT) emerges as a promising adjuvant treatment, utilizing photothermal agents (PTAs) to convert light energy into heat for tumor ablation. Another innovative approach, photodynamic therapy (PDT), leverages photosensitizers (PSs) and specific wavelength laser irradiation to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), offering an effective and non-toxic alternative...

Atmospheric water harvesting is a practical strategy that is achieved by removing materials from air moisture to relieve global water scarcity. Here we design a water-harvester (i.e., MOF-303/thiolated polymer composite (MTC)) by using a metal-organic framework (MOF-303) and thiolated chitosan (TC) skeleton. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding between TC and MOF-303 facilitates porous structures with enlarged air-polymer interfaces for long cycling life and high capacity at low relative humidity. Benefiting from synergetic effects on porosity and anchorage for accelerating the uptake-release of moisture, MTC exhibits a rapid water uptake capacity of 0...

Lung microvascular endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction is the pathological hallmark of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) is a key regulator in control of endothelial barrier disruption and inflammation. Our recent study has demonstrated that ubiquitin-specific peptidase 40 (USP40) preserves endothelial integrity by targeting HSP90 for its deubiquitination and inactivation. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a plant hormone of the auxin class, can also be catabolized from dietary tryptophan by the intestinal microbiota...

Myo-inositol-3-phosphate synthase (MIPS) is the rate-limiting enzyme in PA biosynthesis pathway, and regarded as the prime target for engineering lpa crop. In this paper, the rice MIPS gene (RINO2) knockout mutants and its wild type were performed to investigate the genotype-dependent alteration in the heat injury-induced spikelet fertility and its underlying mechanism for rice plants being imposed to heat stress at anthesis...

The maintenance of viral protein homeostasis depends on the interaction between host cell proteins and viral proteins. As a molecular chaperone, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been shown to play an important role in viral infection. Our results showed that HSP70 can affect translation, replication, assembly, and release during the life cycle of duck hepatitis A virus type 1 (DHAV-1). We demonstrated that HSP70 can regulate viral translation by interacting with the DHAV-1 internal ribosome entry site (IRES)...
